The use of fluoroquinolone in children (소아에서 fluoroquinolone 사용)

  • The fluoroquinolones are an important group of antibiotics widely used in the treatment of various infectious diseases in adults, as a result of an excellent spectrum of activity, good tissue penetration and convenient ways of administration. In recent decades, there has been extensive development, clinical investigation, licensure and use of fluoroquinolone antibiotics. However, the use of fluoroquinolones in children has been limited because of their potential to induce arthropathy in juvenile animals. Despite class label warnings against use in children, prescriptions for quinolone antibiotics to treat infections in children have become increasingly prevalent. The main use of fluoroquinolones in pediatrics should be, understandably, in serious life-threatening infections for which other antibiotics therapies are not effective or available. While most of the published studies failed to detect an increased rate of articular adverse effects in children treated with fluoroquinolones, an increase in the use of these compounds, particularly in community-acquired lower respiratory infections, could accelerate the emergence of multidrug-resistant (including fluoroquinolone) pneumococcal strains. This review will discus the main issues related to the use of fluoroquinolones in children, the major problems of resistance developing among these compounds, with special emphasis on the potential side effects and skilled use of these alternative potent drugs in pediatric infection.

Microstructural behavior on weld fusion zone of Al-Ti and Ti-Al dissimilar lap welding using single-mode fiber laser

  • Titanium (Ti) metal and its alloys are desirable materials for ship hulls and other structures because of their high strength, light weight and corrosion-resistance. And light weight and corrosion-resistant aluminum (Al) is the ideal metal for shipbuilding. The joining of Ti and Al dissimilar metals is one of the effective measures to reduce weight of the structures or to save rare metals. Ti and Al have great differences in materials properties, and intermetallic compounds such as Ti3Al, TiAl, TiAl3 are easily formed at the contacting surface between Ti and Al. Thus, welding or joining of Ti and Al is considered to be extremely difficult. However, it was clarified that ultra-high speed welding could suppress the formation of intermetallic compounds in the previous study. Results of tensile shear strength increases with an increase in the welding speed, and therefore extremely high welding speed (50m/min in this study) is good to dissimilar weldability for Ti and Al. In this study, therefore, full penetration dissimilar lap welding of Ti (upper) - Al (lower) and Al (upper) - Ti (lower) with single-mode fiber laser was tried at ultra-high welding speed, and the microstructure of the interface zones in the dissimilar Al and Ti weld beads was investigated.

  • There are many high-rise apartment building construction in Korea. There was an accident to pass through worker head by rebar dropped from height place. Therefore, low cost-high effectiveness method to prevent this type of accident should be revised and applied into the construction site. This study is to find out which method could be effectively applied to a site with low cost. Practical field test at 4th floor, 10th floor of apartment building site using re-bar diameter D10, D13, D16, D19, D22 with a length of 1 m, 1.5 m, 2 m, 2.5 m, 3 m which are common by used in a site. The test has also been done with a cover of styrofoam thickness 4.5 cm and thickness 9cm on field drop preventing net. One sheet of styrofoam thickness 45 mm has approximately two times stronger than only prevention net, It is found. Also, Two sheets have approximately two times stronger than one sheet of it.

Experimental Study to Investigate the Factors Affecting Durability of Spalled Cement Concrete Pavements (스폴링이 발생한 콘크리트 포장의 내구성 영향인자 조사를 위한 실험적 연구)

  • PURPOSES : It is necessary to prevent premature failure of concrete pavements caused by durability problems. The purpose of this study was to find factors affecting the durability of concrete pavements, and suggest improvement methods for existing concrete mix design. METHODS : Factors influencing durability were derived from laboratory test data for common field failure conditions and main properties of concrete cores taken from the field. The improvement of concrete properties was investigated by evaluating the performance of existing and proposed mix proportion designs and curing methods. RESULTS : The compressive strength and the absorbing performance of the low Blaine cement and the high-strength mixture were better than those of the Type I cement. Wet curing showed better compressive strength, elastic modulus, coefficient of thermal expansion, and absorption performance than air curing or compound curing. As a result of comparing concrete cores collected in the field, the sections with good durability showed good performance in terms of resistance to chloride ion penetration, absorption, and initial absorption rate. CONCLUSIONS : The absorption performance was considered as a possible foactor affecting durability of cement concrete pavements as a result of field core tests. In order to improve the durability of the pavement concrete, it is necessary to improve the existing mixtures and curing methods.

Status and Prospect of Test Methods of Quality Silicone Water Repellent for Protecting Reinforced Concrete

  • Impregnating with quality silicone water repellent on the concrete surface is an effective method of protecting concrete. Quality silicone water repellent has been widely used in the engineering profession because of its desirable properties such as hydrophobicity, keeping concrete breathable and preserving the original appearance of the concrete. The companies in China that produce silicone water repellent are listed. Test methods in the specifications or standards about silicone water repellent in China are summed. The test methods relative to durability of concrete impregnated with silicone water repellent (such as resistant to chloride ion penetration, resistant to alkali, resistance to freezing and thawing and weatherability etc.) and the constructive quality (such as water absorption rate, impregnating depth and the dry velocity coefficient etc.) are compared and analyzed. The results indicate that there are differences among test methods relative to different specifications with the same index and therefore, confusion has ensued when selecting test methods. All test methods with the exception of the method of water absorption rate by using a Karsten flask are not non-destructive methods or conducted in a laboratory. Finally, further research on silicone water repellent during application is proposed.

Development of Metal Filter with Nanoporous Structure by Adhesion of Metal Nanoparticles Sintered onto a Micor-Filter (마이크로-필터 상에 소결 처리된 금속 나노입자 고착에 의한 나노기공체 금속 필터 개발)

  • The nanoparticle-agglomerates are synthesized by laser ablation, which have the morphology of dendrite structure. The filtration performance of a conventional micron-fibrous metal filter was improved by adhering nanoparticle-agglomerates onto the filter surface. The Sintered-Nanoparticle-Agglomerates-adhered Filter (SNAF) adhered with nanostructured material was made by heat treatment after deposition of nanoparticle-agglomerates sintered in aerosol phase onto the micron-fibrous metal filter. As the sintering temperature increases, the pressure drop of the filter increases a little but the filtration efficiency increases remarkably. This is due to increase of surface area of nanoparticle-agglomerates adhered onto the micron-fibrous metal filter.

  • The purpose of this study is investigated the method for estimation of the liquefaction on the reclaimed land, located in Incheon and assessed the ability of liquefaction under the condition of criteria, which is the magnitude '6.5' of seismic on the basis of the domestic seismic characteristics. Performed not only field test but the experiment as well to study how the fine content would affect into the dreging and reclaimed land and also estimated the safety factor through the empirical method and anticipated detail method based on the results. Within the reclaimed land, there are many sized soils which are almost extended from well-graded silty sand(SM) to poor-graded fine grained sand, and which have the condition, so called, the liquefaction which is easily to bring into under the circumstances within the ground. However, partly, now that the soil is mixed with silt and silty clay which include the content of fine grained dust quite a bit, the difficulties and inconveniences has been expected while trying to find the ratio of cyclic resistance, but finally Seed and Idriss method showed the most way when we estimate the safety factor on the liquefaction.

The Use of Fluoroquinolones in Children: Recent Advances (소아에서의 Fluoroquinolones 사용: 최근 경향을 중심으로)

  • Fluoroquinolones have been widely used since the development of nalidixic acid because of the excellent spectrum of activity, superior tissue penetration, and convenient route of administration. Despite such advantages, the usage in children is limited by concerns of toxicity to cartilage, damage to joints in animal studies, and an increase in antibiotic resistance. However, pediatric use has been increasing under certain circumstances with no report of such adverse effects. Further study is required prior to recommendation for general use of fluoroquinolones in children. The careful administration of fluoroquinolones is recommended only in limited circumstances, such as failure of primary antibiotics and lack of alternative antibiotics.

A Study on Centrifuge Model Experiments of Soft Soil Ground Installed with PBD (PBD가 설치된 연약지반의 원심모형실험에 관한 연구)

  • This study is the results of experimental and numerical study on the consolidational behavior of multi-layered soft soil ground installed with plastic board drains (PBD). Centrifuge model tests with a marine clay sampled from field were performed to investigate the consolidational behavior of multi-layered ground where a dredged soil was placed on the soft clay ground and PBDs were installed. Test results were compared with those of numerical analyses, using the 2-D equivalent model previously proposed. From test results, it was found that the amount of consolidation settlement occurred in the original ground due to embankment surcharge loads was in the range of 38% of total settlement in the whole ground. From the results of cone penetration tests executed after finishing the centrifuge model tests, the cone resistance was found to increase with depth. The measured water contents inbetween PBDs were in the ranges of 38~50% and their values tended to increase with increasing the distance between PBDs.
