Superconductor flywheel energy storage system (SFESs) is an electro-mechanical battery with high energy storage density, long life, and good environmental affinity. SFESs have been developed for application to a regenerative power of train, the storage of distributed power sources such as solar and wind power, and a power quality improvement. As superconductor bearing is completely passive, it is not necessary to control a system elaborately but accurate analysis in mechanical properties of the HTS bearing is very important for application to SFESs. Stiffness and damping properties are the main index for evaluation the capacity of HTS bearings and make it possible to adjust rotordynamic properties while operating the rotor-bearing system. The superconductor bearing consists of a stator containing single grain YBCO bulks, a ring-type permanent magnet rotor with a strong magnetic field that can reach the bulk surface, and a bearing support for assembly to SFESs frame. In this study, we investigated the stiffness and damping properties of superconductor bearings in 35 kWh SFESs. Finally, we found that 35 kWh superconductor bearing has uniform stiffness properties depend on the various orientations of rotor vibration. We discovered total damping coefficient of superconductor bearing is affected by not only magnetic damping in superconductor bulk but also external damping in bearing support. From the results, it is confirmed that the conducted evaluation can considerably improve energy storage efficiency of the SFESs, and these results can be used for the optimal capacity of superconductor bearings of the SFESs.

In this paper, 2-DOF vehicle suspension system with a semiactive on-off damper was studied for improving the ride comfort. It is known that a nonlinear hydraulic damper, which generates force proportional to the square of the relative velocity, can describe the actual fluid resisting type damper more properly than the traditional viscous damping model. On the other hand, hydraulic damper adoption in analysis makes the system nonlinear and causes difficulties to get the system response. In this work, time domain direct integration method was used to calculate system displacement and acceleration. first of all, the response of the suspension system experiencing a given road profile was optimized by Lagrangian multiplier method within the range of given damping coefficients. The appropriate on-loaf damping values were obtained by averaging the already calculated optimum damping coefficients from Lagrangian techniques. The criterion to control the on-off mechanism was determined by examining the suspension efficiency. It was found that the best out of practically applicable criteria is following the sign (positive and negative) of the multiplication of relative displacement and velocity. Judging from the theoretical calculations, it was proved that the semiactive on-off damper can increase suspension efficiency as much as 8-11% in object function.
Energy induced by minor earthquake and micro vibration cannot be dissipated by traditional buckling-restrained braces (BRBs). To solve this problem, a new type of hybrid passive control device, named as VE-BRB, which is configured by a BRB with high-damping viscoelastic (VE) layers, is developed and studied. Theoretical analysis, performance tests, numerical simulation and case analysis are conducted to study the seismic behavior of VE-BRBs. The results indicate that the combination of hysteretic and damping devices lead to a multi-phased nature and good performance. VE-BRB's working state can be divided into three phases: before yielding of the steel core, VE layers provide sufficient damping ratio to mitigate minor vibrations; after yielding of the steel core, the steel's hysteretic deformations provide supplemental dissipative capacity for structures; after rupture of the steel core, VE layers are still able to work normally and provide multiple security assurance for structures. The simulation results agreed well with the experimental results, validating the finite element analysis method, constitutive models and the identified parameters. The comparison of the time history analysis on a 6-story frame with VE-BRBs and BRBs verified the advantages of VE-BRB for seismic protection of structures compared with traditional BRB. In general, VE-BRB had the potential to provide better control effect on structural displacement and shear in all stages than BRB as expected.
The number of cable-stayed bridges has been increasing worldwide, causing issues in maintaining the structural safety and integrity of bridges. The stay cable, one of the most critical members in cable-stayed bridges, is vulnerable to wind-induced vibrations owing to its inherent low damping capacity. Thus, vibration mitigation of stay cables has been an important issue both in academia and practice. While a semi-active control scheme shows effective vibration reduction compared to a passive control scheme, real-world applications are quite limited because it requires complicated equipment, including for data acquisition, and power supply. This study aims to develop an Arduino-based integrated cable vibration control system implementing a semi-active control algorithm. The integrated control system is built on the low-cost, low-power Arduino platform, embedding a semi-active control algorithm. A MEMS accelerometer is installed in the platform to conduct a state feedback for the semi-active control. The Linear Quadratic Gaussian control is applied to estimate a cable state and obtain a control gain, and the clipped optimal algorithm is implemented to control the damping device. This study selects the magnetorheological damper as a semi-active damping device, controlled by the proposed control system. The developed integrated system is applied to a laboratory size cable with a series of experimental studies for identifying the effect of the system on cable vibration reduction. The semi-active control embedded in the integrated system is compared with free and passive mode cases and is shown to reduce the vibration of stay-cables effectively.

To dale, lots of types of tuned mass dampers are developed and investigated to reduce dynamic responses of a structure due to various causes. In this study, control performance of semi-active tuned mass damper(STMD), that can change the damping of tuned mass damper in real time based on structural responses, was investigated with respect to various types of excitation employing numerical simulation. Skyhook control algorithm was used to appropriately modulate the damping ratio of semi-active damper that composes STMD. The control effectiveness of a STMD under harmonic and random excitation were evaluated using a single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) structure in comparison with a conventional passive tuned mass damper (TMD). The robustness of a STMD and a passive TMD were compared along with the variation of the mass of a SDOF structure. The control performance of STMD using magnetorheological (MR) damper was also investigated in this study. Based on the numerical studios, it was shown that the control effectiveness of the STMD was significantly superior to that of a passive TMD with respect to harmonic and random excitation.

In the study, the effects of damping devices on damping ratio increase and wind-load reduction were investigated based on the computational platform, which is one of the parametric modeling methods. The computational platform helps the designers or engineers to evaluate the efficacy of the numerous alternative structural systems for irregular Super-Tall building, which is crucial in determining the capacity and the number of the supplemental damping devices for adding the required damping ratios to the building. The inherent damping ratio was estimated based on the related domestic and foreign researches conducted by using real wind-load records. Two types of damping devices were considered: One is inter-story installation type passive control devices and the other is mass type active control devices. The supplemental damping ratio due to the damping devices was calculated by means of equivalent static analysis using an equation suggested by FEMA. The optimal design of the damping devices was conducted by using the computational platform. The structural element quantity reduction effect resulting from the installation of the damping devices could be simply assessed by proposing a wind-load reduction factor, and the effectiveness of the proposed method was verified by a numerical example of a 455m high-rise building. The comparison between roof displacement and the story shear forces by the nonlinear time history analysis and the proposed method indicated that the proposed method could simply but approximately estimate the effects of the supplemental damping devices on the roof displacement and the member force reduction.

Various passive energy dissipation systems have been proposed and widely applied to real building structures under seismic load due to their high energy-dissipation potential and low cost for installation and maintenance. This paper presents nonlinear dynamic analysis results of the effectiveness of exterior-installed Kagome damping system(EKDS) in passively reducing seismic response. Kagome damping system proposed by previous studies has isotropic and bi-linear hysteretic characteristics and the installation configuration is newly presented in this study. The 15 and 20 story RC framed apartment buildings are used for verifying the effectiveness of the EKDS. The stiffness ratio of the damper supporting column to the original building, the number of the dampers, and the installed stories were considered as design parameters. Numerical results demonstrated that the EKDS were very effective in reducing both the two horizontal directional seismic responses by just using smaller number of exterior-installed damping system when compared to the traditional one-directional inter-story installed damping systems.
The possibility of a broadband noise reduction of piezoelectric smart panels is experimentally studied. Piezoelectric smart panel is basically a plate structure on which piezoelectric patch with shunt circuits is mounted and sound absorbing material is bonded on the surface of the structure. Sound absorbing materials can absorb the sound transmitted at mid frequency region effectively while the use of piezoelectric shunt damping can reduce the transmission at resonance frequencies of the panel structure. To be able to tune the piezoelectric shunt circuit, the measured electrical impedance model is adopted. Resonant shunt circuit composed of register and inductor in stories is considered and the circuit parameters are determined based on maximizing the dissipated energy through the circuit. The transmitted noise reduction performance of smart panels is investigated using an acoustic tunnel. The tunnel is a square crosses sectional tunnel and a loud speaker is mounted at one side of the tunnel as a sound source. Panels are mounted in the middle of the tunnel and the transmitted sound pressure across the panels is measured. Noise reduction performance of a double smart panel possessing absorbing material and air gap shows a good result at mid frequency region except the first resonance frequency. By enabling the piezoelectric shunt damping, noise reduction is achieved at the resonance frequency as well. Piezoelectric smart panels incorporating passive method and piezoelectric shunt damping are a promising technology for noise reduction in a broadband frequency.

In this study, the efficacy of the newly developed smart passive control system to improve seismic performance of base isolated building structures is numerically verified. The smart passive control system consists of a magnetorheological (MR) damper and an electromagnetic induction (EMI) part. The damping characteristics of an MR damper can be controlled by the current generated in an EMI part according to the Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction. An EMI part consisting of a permanent magnet and a solenoid coil could substitute a control system including sensors, a controller and an external power supply in a conventional smart control system. The benchmark control problem for a base isolated building presented by the american society of civil engineers is considered for numerical simulation. The control performance of the smart passive control system is compared to that of the conventional smart control system using MR dampers. It is demonstrated from the numerical simulation results that the smart passive control system is useful to improve the seismic performance of base isolated buildings.
The present paper deals with the optimum performance of the passive hybrid control system for the benchmark highway bridge under the six earthquakes ground motion. The investigation is carried out on a simplified finite element model of the 91/5 highway overcrossing located in Southern California. A viscous fluid damper (known as VFD) or non-linear fluid viscous spring damper has been used as a passive supplement device associated with polynomial friction pendulum isolator (known as PFPI) to form a passive hybrid control system. A parametric study is considered to find out the optimum parameters of the PFPI system for the optimal response of the bridge. The effect of the velocity exponent of the VFD and non-linear FV spring damper on the response of the bridge is carried out by considering different values of velocity exponent. Further, the influences of damping coefficient and vibration period of the dampers are also examined on the response of the bridge. To study the effectiveness of the passive hybrid system on the response of the isolated bridge, it is compared with the corresponding PFPI isolated bridges. The investigation showed that passive supplement damper such as VFD or non-linear FV spring damper associated with PFPI system is significantly reducing the seismic response of the benchmark highway bridge. Further, it is also observed that non-linear FV spring damper hybrid system is a more promising strategy in reducing the response of the bridge compared to the VFD associated hybrid system.
