  • Korean rivers and their surrounding environments have been used excessively for rice production in the past and more recently for construction of urban areas to accomodate the rapidly increasing population. Affected Korean rivers experience dramatic fluctuations in their water levels and have faster currents compared with those in other countries. In order to restore more natural conditions in rivers experiencing such conditions, we employed a partial restoration method, which is designed to achieve physical and biological stability simultaneously. Concrete blocks were introduced to increase the river's physical stability during floods, and terra cottem, a soil enhancer, was used to reduce water loss due to intense heat. These interventions increased the river's ability to hold water and thereby promoted plant growth. This restoration method increased vegetation coverage and species diversity in treated areas, and changed the species composition in treated areas to more closely approximate that of the control site. These results suggest that this method is effective in restoring damaged habitats to more natural conditions.

  • In this paper, an active vibration control of a tensioned, elastic, axially moving string is investigated. The dynamics of the translating string are described with a non-linear partial differential equation coupled with an ordinary differential equation. A right boundary control to suppress the transverse vibrations of the translating continuum is proposed. The control law is derived via the Lyapunov second method. The exponential stability of the closed-loop system is verified. The effectiveness of the proposed control law is simulated.

  • In this paper, the model reference adaptive control (MRAC) of a flexible structure is investigated. Any mechanically flexible structure is inherently distributed parameter in nature, so that its dynamics are described by a partial, rather than ordinary, differential equation. The MRAC problem is formulated as an initial value problem of coupled partial and ordinary differential equations in weak form. The well-posedness of the initial value problem is proved. The control law is derived by using the Lyapunov redesign method on an infinite dimensional filbert space. Uniform asymptotic stability of the closed loop system is established, and asymptotic tracking, i. e., convergence of the state-error to zero, is obtained. With an additional persistence of excitation condition for the reference model, parameter-error convergence to zero is also shown. Numerical simulations are provided.

  • In this paper, an active vibration control of a tensioned elastic axially moving string is investigated. The dynamics of the translating string ale described by a non-linear partial differential equation coupled with an ordinary differential equation. The time varying control in the form of the right boundary transverse motions is suggested to stabilize the transverse vibration of the translating continuum. A control law based on Lyapunov's second method is derived. Exponential stability of the translating string under boundary control is verified. The effectiveness of the proposed controller is shown through the simulations.

  • Stable molecular conformations were calculated for the p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene crown ether bridged at the lower rim with pyridyl unit (1) in the various conformers and their potassium-ion complexes. The structures of three distinct conformations have been optimized using DFT B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) method. Relative stability of free host 1 is in following order: cone (most stable) > partial-cone > 1,3-alternate conformer. For two different kinds of complexation mode, the potassium cation in the crown-ether moiety (cr) has much better complexation efficiency than in the benzene-rings (bz) pocket for all three kinds of conformation of host molecule 1. The relative stability of complex (1+K+) in the cr-binding mode is in following order: partial-cone (most stable) ~ cone > 1,3-alternate conformer.

  • We have performed DFT calculations to investigate the conformational characteristics and hydrogen bonds of the p-tert-butylcalix[5]arene (1) and p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene (2). The structures of different conformers of 1 were optimized by using B3LYP/6-31+G(d,p) method. The relative stability of the various conformers of 1 is in the following order: cone (most stable) > 1,2-alternate > partial-cone > 1,3-alternate. The relative stability of four conformers of 2 is in the following order: cone (most stable) > partial-cone > 1,2-alternate > 1,3-alternate. The primary factor affecting the relative stabilities of the various conformers of the 1 and 2 are the number and strength of the intramolecular hydrogen bonds. The hydrogen-bond distances are discussed based on different calculation methods.

  • Nonlinear free vibration and stability responses of a carbon nanotube reinforced composite beam under temperature rising are investigated in this paper. The material of the beam is considered as a polymeric matrix by reinforced the single-walled carbon nanotubes according to different distributions with temperature-dependent physical properties. With using the Hamilton's principle, the governing nonlinear partial differential equation is derived based on the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. In the nonlinear kinematic assumption, the Von Kármán nonlinearity is used. The Galerkin's decomposition technique is utilized to discretize the governing nonlinear partial differential equation to nonlinear ordinary differential equation and then is solved by using of multiple time scale method. The critical buckling temperatures, the nonlinear natural frequencies and the nonlinear free response of the system is obtained. The effect of different patterns of reinforcement on the critical buckling temperature, nonlinear natural frequency, nonlinear free response and phase plane trajectory of the carbon nanotube reinforced composite beam investigated with temperature-dependent physical property.

  • Nonstandard finite difference schemes are considered for a generalization of the Cahn-Hilliard equation with Neumann boundary conditions and the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation with periodic boundary conditions, which are of the type $$U_t\;+\;\frac{{\partial}^2}{{\partial}x^2} g(u,\;U_x,\;U_{xx})\;=\;\frac{{\partial}^{\alpha}}{{\partial}x^{\alpha}}f(u,\;u_x),\;{\alpha}\;=\;0,\;1,\;2$$. Stability and error estimate of approximate solutions for the corresponding schemes are obtained using the extended Lax-Richtmyer equivalence theorem. Three examples are provided to apply the nonstandard finite difference schemes.

  • Level II AFDA and Level III MCS reliability models are applied to analyze the stability of armor units on trading and coastal harbors in Korea. Hudson's formula and Van der Meer's formula are used in this reliability analysis. Also, probability density functions of reliability index and probability of failure are derived by the additional analysis. In addition, the partial safety factors of all harbors related to armor units can be straightforwardly evaluated by the inverse-reliability method. The upper and lower limits and average level of partial safety factors can be statistically investigated with the results of all cases applied in this paper. Therefore, it may be possible to design armor units of new breakwaters including the uncertainty of random variable and target level by using the present results.
