  • Simple canonical correlation biplot is a graphical method to investigate two sets of variables and observations in simple canonical correlation analysis. If we consider the set of covariate variables that linearly affects two sets of variables, we can apply the partial canonical correlation biplot in partial canonical correlation analysis that removes the linear effect of the set of covariate variables on two sets of variables. On the other hand, we consider the set of covariate variables that linearly affect one set of variables but not the other. In this case, if we apply the simple or partial canonical correlation biplot, we cannot clearly interpret other two sets of variables. Therefore, in this study, we will apply the semi-partial canonical correlation analysis of Timm (2002) and remove the linear effect of the set of covariate variables on one set of variables but not the other. And we suggest the semi-partial canonical correlation biplot for interpreting the semi-partial canonical correlation analysis. In addition, we will compare shapes and shape the variabilities of the simple, partial and semi-partial canonical correlation biplots using a procrustes analysis.

  • Biplot is a useful graphical method to explore simultaneously rows and columns of two-way data matrix. In particular, canonical correlation biplot is a method for investigating two sets of variables and observations in canonical correlation analysis graphically. For more than three sets of variables, we can apply the generalized canonical correlation biplot in generalized canonical correlation analysis which is an expansion of the canonical correlation analysis. On the other hand, we consider the set of covariate variables which is affecting the linearly two sets of variables. In this case, if we apply the generalized canonical correlation biplot, we cannot clearly interpret the other two sets of variables due to the effect of the set of covariate variables. Therefor, in this paper, we will apply the partial canonical correlation analysis of Rao (1969) removing the linear effect of the set of covariate variables on two sets of variables. We will suggest the partial canonical correlation biplot for inpreting the partial canonical correlation analysis graphically.

  • The generalized canonical correlation biplot is a 2-dimensional plot to graphically investigate the relationship between more than three sets of variables and the relationship between observations and variables. Recently, Choi and Choi (2010) investigated the relationship physique, physical fitness and basic skill factors of Korea Tennis Association(KTA) players of using this biplot; however we consider the set of covariate variables affecting the linearly on two sets of variables. In this case, if we apply the generalized canonical correlation biplot, we cannot clearly interpret the other two sets of variables due to the effect of the set of covariate variables. Moreover, Yeom and Choi (2011) provided partial canonical correlation analysis that removed the linear effect of the set of covariate variables on two sets of variables. In addition, Procrustes analysis is a useful tool for comparing shape between configurations. In this study, we will investigate the relationship between physical fitness and basic skill factors of KTA players of using a partial canonical correlation biplot and Procrustes analysis. We compare shapes and shape variabilities for the generalized, partial and simple canonical correlation biplots.

  • The partial discharge(PD) signal, may seems to be stochastic and merely random, was investigated using the method to discern between chaos and random signal, e.g. correlation integral, Lyapunov characteristic exponents and etc. For the purpose of obtaining experimental data, partial discharge detecting system via computer aided acoustic sensor, detect PD signal from the insulating system, was used. While this method is very different from typical statistical analysis from the point of view of a nonlinear analysis, it can provide better interpretable criterion according to the time evolution with a degradation process in the same type insulating system.

  • The partial safety factors of armor stones have been calculated on the assumption that all random variables are independent one another. However, wave height and wave steepness are not independent in the van der Meer's formula of armor stones but they are correlated. In the present study, we calculated the partial safety factors considering the correlation and compared them with those of other researchers who did not consider the correlation. The correlation between wave height and steepness is closely related to the variability of wave period. As the variability of wave period decreases, the correlation between wave height and steepness becomes strong, and hence the calculation results with and without consideration of the correlation show more difference. Therefore, the correlation should be taken into account in the calculation of partial safety factors in the area where the variability of wave period is small.

  • The benthic macroinvertebrates index (BMI) was developed based on the 5-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), which is the amount of biodegradable organic matter in stream water. However, benthic macroinvertebrates mainly live in the streambed substrate and are affected by the interaction of water quality and substrate. This study was conducted to examine the interactive relationship between water quality items (BOD5, total phosphorus (TP), total suspended solids (TSS)) and substrate with BMI by performing statistical analyses (four-way analysis of variance, Pearson's correlation analysis, partial correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis). The data used in the analyses were collected from 19,915 sampling units at 1,937 sites in South Korea from 2010 to 2020. The interaction effect between BOD5 and substrate types was confirmed through a four-way analysis of variance. Partial correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis estimated the degree of influence on the change in BMI value in the order of mean grain size of the substrate as (𝜱m) > BOD5 > TP > TSS. BMI can be regarded as an index that evaluates the comprehensive effects of water quality and streambed status, although it is an index that was developed based on the amount of biodegradable organic matter in a water column.

  • Reliable long-term streamflow forecasting is invaluable for water resource planning and management which allocates water supply according to the demand of water users. Forecasting of seasonal inflow to Andong dam is performed and assessed using statistical methods based on hydrometeorological data. Predictors which is used to forecast seasonal inflow to Andong dam are selected from southern oscillation index, sea surface temperature, and 500 hPa geopotential height data in northern hemisphere. Predictors are selected by the following procedure. Primary predictors sets are obtained, and then final predictors are determined from the sets. The primary predictor sets for each season are identified using cross correlation and mutual information. The final predictors are identified using partial cross correlation and partial mutual information. In each season, there are three selected predictors. The values are determined using bootstrapping technique considering a specific significance level for predictor selection. Seasonal inflow forecasting is performed by multiple linear regression analysis using the selected predictors for each season, and the results of forecast using cross validation are assessed. Multiple linear regression analysis is performed using SAS. The results of multiple linear regression analysis are assessed by mean squared error and mean absolute error. And contingency table is established and assessed by Heidke skill score. The assessment reveals that the forecasts by multiple linear regression analysis are better than the reference forecasts.

  • This study attempted to find out whether learning time has a mediating effect according to the gender, region, and grade of middle school students in the relationship between academic engagement and self-esteem. To this end, a survey of 1,045 middle school students in Gyeongsangnam-do was conducted on academic engagement, learning time, and self-esteem. Difference verification was conducted to determine the difference in academic engagement, learning time, and self-esteem according to the general characteristics of the study subjects, correlation analysis was conducted to determine the correlation between major variables, and regression analysis was conducted to verify the mediating effect of learning time. As a result of the analysis, first, there was no difference in the academic engagement of middle school students by group. In the learning time, middle school students in the city area were significantly higher than those in the township area, male students had higher self-esteem than female students, and students in the city area had significantly higher self-esteem as the grade went up. Second, as a result of correlation analysis, learning time, academic engagement, and self-esteem showed a positive correlation. Third, in the entire group not divided by group, both the direct path through which academic engagement reaches self-esteem and the partial mediating model from learning time to self-esteem showed significant effects. In the analysis by gender, only female students excluding male students showed a partial mediating effect, and the analysis results by region showed a partial mediating effect only on students in the city. The analysis results by grade showed a partial mediating effect only for second-year middle school students. In order to improve the self-esteem of middle school students, education and counseling should be conducted in consideration of not only individual differences by gender and grade, but also the region in which they live.
