  • This paper presents the study on the stability of nonlinear oscillations of a thin cantilever beam subject to harmonic base excitation in vertical direction. Two partial differential governing equations under combined parametric and external excitations were derived and converted into two-degree-of-freedom ordinary differential Mathieu equations by using the Galerkin method. We used the method of multiple scales in order to analyze one-to-one combination resonance. From these, we could obtain the eigenvalue problem and analyze the stability of the system. From the thin cantilever experiment using foamax, we could observe the nonlinear modes of bending, twisting, sway, and snap-through buckling. In addition to qualitative information, the experiment using aluminum gave also the quantitative information for the stability of combination resonance of a thin cantilever beam under parametric excitation.

  • Free vibration analysis of super-elliptical composite thin plates was investigated. Plate is formed by symmetrical quasi-isotropic laminates. Rayleigh-Ritz method was used for parametric analysis based on the governing differential equations of Classical Laminated Plate Theory (CLPT). Simply supported and clamped boundary conditions at the periphery of plates were considered. Parametric study was performed for the effect of different lamination type, aspect ratio, thickness and super-elliptical power on natural frequencies. Convergence study and validation of isotropic case were achieved. A number of design parameters like different dimensions, structure systems, panel sizes, panel thicknesses, lamination sequences, boundary conditions and loading conditions must be considered in the production of composite ships. The number of possible combinations practically may be so high that a parametric study should be carried out in order to determine the optimum design parameters rapidly during the preliminary design stage. The use of Rayleigh-Ritz method could make this parametric study possible. Thereby it might be decreasing the consumption of time, material and labor. Certain results for some different super-elliptical powers presented in tabulated form in Appendix for designers as well.

  • This research presents an analytical model to investigate the stability due to the ball bearing waviness i n a rotating system supported by two ball bearings. The stiffness of a ball bearing changes periodically due to the waviness in the rolling elements as the rotor rotates, and it can be calculated by differentiating the nonlinear contact forces. The linearized equations of motion can be represented as a parametrically excited system in the form of Mathieu's equation, because the stiffness coefficients have time -varying components due to the waviness. Their solution can be assumed as a Fourier series expansion so that the equations of motion can be rewritten as the simultaneous algebraic equations with respect to the Fourier coefficients. Then, stability can be determined by solving the Hill's infinite determinant of these algebraic equations. The validity of this research is proved by comparing the stability chart with the time responses of the vibration model suggested by prior researches. This research shows that the waviness in the rolling elements of a ball bearing generates the time-varying component of the stiffness coefficient, whose frequency is called the frequency of the parametric excitation. It also shows that the instability takes place from the positions in which the ratio of the natural frequency to the frequency of the parametric excitation corresponds to i/2 (i=1,2,3..).

  • To calculate the vibrations of a tout cable subjected to axial support excitations, a nonlinear relationship of cable force and the support displacement under static situations are employed to depict the quasi-static vibration of the cable. The dynamic components of quasi-static vibration are inputted as "direct loads" to cause the parametric vibrations on the cable. Both the governing equations of motion and deformation compatibility for parametric vibrations are then derived, which indicates the high coupling of cable parametric force and deformation. Numerical solutions, based on the finite difference method, are put forward for the parametric vibrations, which is validated by the finite element method under periodic axial support excitations. For the quasi-static response, the shorter cables are more sensitive to support excitations than longer ones at small cable force. The quasi-static cable force makes the greatest contribution to the total cable force, but the parametric cable force is responsible for the occurrence of cable loosening at large excitation amplitudes. Moreover, this study also revealed that the traditional approach, assuming a linear relationship between quasi-static cable force and axial support displacement, would result in some great error of the cable parametric responses.

  • This study investigates the whirling stability of a rotating shaft-disk system under parametric excitation using periodically varying torque. The equations of motion were derived using a lumped-mass model, and the Floquet method was employed to find the effects of torque fluctuation, internal and external damping, and rotational speed on whirling stability. Results indicated that the effect of torque fluctuation was considerable on the instability around resonance, but minimal on supercritical instability. Stability diagrams were sensitive to the parametric excitation frequency; critical torque decreased upon increasing excitation frequency, with faster response convergence or divergence. In addition, internal and external damping had a considerable effect on unstable regions, and reduced the effects of the parametric excitation frequency on critical torque and speed. Results obtained from the Floquet approach were in good agreement with those obtained by numerical integration, except for some cases with Floquet multipliers very close to unity.

  • This paper presents the design of Brushless DC (BLDC) motor using parametric design. According to the variation of magnitude of back emf and inductance, characteristic equations of BLDC motor are solved then output power, current, and torque ripples are calculated. Therefore output characteristics of BLDC motor according to motor parameter can be easily understood, and the range of back emf and inductance satisfying required output performance can be easily found. Presented design method leads to the BLDC motor design to be simple and effective, and the optimal design of BLDC motor using parametric design for 3kW with 50000rpm is presented.

  • In this paper, a parametric study on ribs which are installed in an equilateral triangular internal cooling channel is presented. The numerical analysis of the flow structure and heat transfer characteristics is performed using three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with the shear stress transport turbulence model. The numerical results are obtained at Reynolds number, 20,000. The parametric study is performed for the parameters, the angle of a rib, rib pitch-to-hydraulic diameter ratio, rib width-to-hydraulic diameter ratio, and rib height-to-hydraulic diameter ratio. The computational results are validated with the experimental data for area-averaged Nusselt number.

  • Double-diffusive convection inside a triangular porous cavity is studied numerically. Galerkin finite element method is adopted to derive the discrete form of the governing differential equations. The first-order backward Euler scheme is used for temporal discretization with the second-order Adams-Bashforth scheme for the convection terms in the energy and species conservation equations. The Boussinesq-Oberbeck approximation is used to calculate the density dependence on the temperature and concentration fields. A parametric study is performed with the Lewis number, the Rayleigh number, the buoyancy ratio, and the shape of the triangle. The effect of gravity orientation is considered also. Results obtained include the flow, temperature, and concentration fields. The differences induced by varying physical parameters are analyzed and discussed. It is found that the heat transfer rate is sensitive to the shape of the triangles. For the given geometries, buoyancy ratio and Rayleigh numbers are the dominating parameters controlling the heat transfer.

  • This study presents the plastic analysis for the flexural and shear strength of RC beams related to anchorage failure. Five failure mechanisms based on the upper bound solution were constructed and the ultimate strength equations were formulated from them. The parametric study herein was carried out to observe the variation of the controlling failure mechanism depending on the parameters in the ultimate strength equations. The results of the parametric study show that controlling failure mechanism and ultimate strength are determined through the interaction of each parameter. This indicated that respective structural configuratins must be treated in a unified manner. Additionally this study proposes the scope of the parameter to induce the flexural of RC deep beams.
