  • This study was carried out to elucidate the partial substitutability of SB latex with environmental-friendly coating binders for coated paper. Starch-based biobinder, ethylene vinyl acetate and acryl-based binder were evaluated for this purpose. Several combinations of above binders were applied to top layer coating, and properties of coating colors and printability were evaluated. When 20% and 30% of SB latex were substituted by acryl-based synthetic binder, ethylene vinyl acetate and biobinder, the brightness, whiteness and opacity of coated paper were similar to those obtained from SB latex. Ink set and stiffness of coated paper manufactured through 20% and 30% substitution of SB latex by biobinder and EVAc were improved, but dry- and wet-pick strength were decreased. The research works on the improvement of dry- and we-pick strength, mechanical stability and rheological properties at high shear condition should be continued for the commercial application of biobinder, EVAc and acryl-based binder.

  • This study was carried out to develop the printing Hanji made of mixed raw materials with mulberry bast fibers and alternative plant fibers such as bamboo, soybean stalks, pepper stalk and sea tangle. All alternative plant fibers were produced by the kraft pulping method with 2 stages of bleaching, and used to prepare the modified traditional paper, Hanji for printing purpose. Printing quality of modified Hanji was analyzed by measuring area and Formcircle of halftones and comparing a letter shape printed on paper. The Hanji made of 60% of mulberry bast fibers and 40% of bamboo bleached kraft pulp showed the best printing quality with the smallest area and the largest Formcircle in all modified Hanji. Through the image analysis of form circles of the letters printed on the Hanji, it could also be confirmed that the best printability of the modified Hanji was made using bamboo fibers.

신문용지 제조에 있어서 무기 충전제들의 영향 (Effect of Inorganic fillers in Newsprint Papermaking)

  • 종이제조에 있어서 종이의 광학적 성질 및 인쇄적성을 개선하기 위하여 여러 종류의 충전제가 사용되고 있다. 본 연구는 신문용지 제조에 있어서 여러 종류의 충전제, 즉 경질탄산칼슘(PCC), 중질탄산칼슘(GCC), 그리고 혼합된 충전제(PCC+미세활석(MVP) 또는 활석(talc), GCC+MVP 또는 talc))를 종이에 충전시켰을 때 종이의 여러 물성에 미치는 영향을 검토하였다. 얻어진 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 1) 충전제를 지료전건중량당 5% 처리시 동일 처리조건하에서의 충전제 보류율은 PCC 처리시 GCC 처리시보다 16.8% 정도 높게 나타났으며, PCC 및 GCC를 처리했을 때 모두, 배합한 충전제의 입자경이 커질수록($PCC{\leq}GCC<MVP<talc$) 보류율이 증가하는 경향을 나타내었다. 2) PCC 처리시 무처리보다(92.2%) 대비 2.3% 이상의 비교적 높은 불투명도 개선효과를 나타내었으며, 배합한 충전제의 평균 입자경이 클수록 불투명도가 감소하는 경향을 나타내었다. 3) PCC 단독 처리시 GCC 단독 처리시보다 소폭의 인열강도 하락을 나타내었으며 20% 배합처리한 충전제의 평균 입자경이 커질수록 인열강도가 증가하는 경향을 나타내었다. 4) PCC 단독처리시 비교적 높은 인장강도를 나타내었으며, 다른 충전제와 혼합처리시 인장강도의 하락폭은 GCC 처리쪽이 적은 것으로 나타났다. 5) PCC를 처리하였을 경우, 배합한 충전제의 입자경이 커질수록 ($PCC{\leq}GCC<MVP<talc$) 파열강도는 직선적으로 감소하였다. 6) 충전제를 처리하였을때 무처리보다 비교적 우수한 인쇄적성 효과를 나타내었다.

  • An accurate characterization of the display device is essential for better color matching. The calibration and characterization process in display device is needed to transform the device dependent color to the device independent color. The process of characterization performs a linearization and transforms the linearized values into the CIE XYZ tristimulus values. The purposes of this paper is to propose optimal color transformation method for accurate reproduction of original copy in display device and to explain the propriety of transformation method using specific variable for the power of gradation expression.

평판인쇄에 있어서 모랫발 형성에 따른 인쇄적성 (I) (Printability according to Graining of Plate in the Lithography (I))

  • In the last decade, digital image processing technics have been rapidly developed according to the advancement of electronic technique, and total scanner and DTP system were developed. Specially, there is need to retouch the color and image on the CRT. In this paper, we described a method to display surface color of printing on the CRT, and an algorithm to simulate the color reproduction by offset printing. The experimental results show that the described method and algorithm are useful and valid on the computer simulation of the multi-color printing adapted process ink characteristics.

A Summary of Recent Pilot Machine and Commercial Machine Trials Comparing a New Microparticle Retention System with Existing Microparticle Technologies

  • The benefits of high performance retention systems have been long recognized by the paper maker. The inter-relation between chemical retention and drainage and their effect on paper production efficiency and paper quality is significant. The subject of this paper is a summary of recent studies comparing three microparticle programs made under highly controlled pilot and commercial paper machine conditions. The results presented in this paper suggest that, in addition to improvements in machine operation, the retention, drainage and formation program can have a marked influence on the paper quality. Improvement of the topographical characteristics of the base paper was observed when the microparticle was a colloidal borosilicate inorganic oxide.

  • The relation between the paper formation analyzer by image process system and smoothness, compressibility uniform of ink absorption is studied. There results indicate that the paper with bad formation has higher apparent bulk than the paper with good formation. The bad formation of paper results in the nonuniform calendering and decrease of the compressibility. The bad formation of paper also results in deformation and omission of printing dots, which affects the reproduction of the printing images.

종이도공용 고광택 유기안료의 적용에 관한 연구 -유기안료의 종류가 도공지 품질에 미치는 영향- (Studies on the Application of High-Gloss Plastic Pigment for Paper Coating(I))

  • This study was carried out to determine the effect of the type of plastic pigment on the coat-ing structure and printability of coated paper. Three kinds of plastic pigments(solid-bead type binder type and hollow type) were used for hti purpose. IN this research it was observed that particle shape and structure of plastic pigment had influenced the rheology of coating color the state of packing and the properties of coated paper. Inorganic pigments used in this research were platelike kaolin clay and rhombic calcium carbonate. Three kinds of plastic pigments were blended with two inorganic pigments respec-tively. The combination of pigments were carried out(1) to determined the effect of particle structure of plastic pigment on the state of dispersion of coating color(2) to observe the effect of calendering temperature on the property of coated paper prepared with different plastic pigments. The data indicated that binder and hollow type plastic pigment gave the best results in improving the properties of coated paper such as paper gloss opacity and air pet-meability.

인쇄과정에서 코팅 용지의 국부적인 표면강도 변화에 관한 연구 (The Local Surface Strength Variation of Coated Papers during Printing)

  • The local surface strength variation of coated papers were measured at various speeds on a number of coated paper samples to study the effects of speed and ink tack on coating pick. Coating pick phenomenon is observed in an ink transfer variation curve as a decrease in the slope of the curve. On the other hand, it causes an actual decrease in net ink transfer to paper with an increase in speed. The effect of speed on coating pick depends on ink tack, ink film thickness and surface properties of coating layer formation of paper. A novel device to measure the surface strength can rate the coating paper in a different order. Comparison are made between dry test of coating paper pick and wet coating pick test of printing in IGT printability tester. Coating formulation is the main key to prevent from coating pick. The binder level increases, the coating pick and the slop decrease. The piling on blanket in printing is a problem when the coating pick is occur on a local area rather than average surface strength of coated papers.

Red Algae Pulp and Its Use in Papermaking

  • Red algae were used to make bleached pulp, from which paper handsheet samples were made. Red algae consists of rhizoidal filaments, epidermal tissues whose color were reddish, mucous carbohydrates, and other minor elements. Rhizoidal filaments of high brightness were obtained after extracting out mucous carbohydrates, and bleaching the remainder by using bleaching chemicals. The sizes and shapes of several rhizoidal filaments (or red algae pulp) from different red algae species were examined, and their handsheet properties were compared. Transparent and transluscent high density paper samples were made without applying refining process from the red algae pulp. White paper samples with good printability and excellent formation were made. We are developing pilot scale pulping and papermaking facilities at this time.
