  • The Annals of beeswax applied-Joseon Dynasty have some serious damages such as cracks, brown, red or black spots, and discolorations by chemical and biological degradation, but others without any beeswax application have still been keeping good quality during over several hundred years. It would be convinced that the beeswax applied in the Annals resulted in these deteriorations. Therefore, in order to focus on the aging mechanism and conservation techniques for the beeswax-applied Annals of Joseon Dynasty, the beeswax applying and dewaxing techniques of Hanji were tried by auto bar coater with a hot plate, and by heat-pressure sensitive extracting treatments. The ageing behaviors of beeswaxed Hanji and dewaxed Hanji were investigated by measuring the changes of physical, optical, morphological, and chemical properties, through accelerated ageing treatment in dry oven at $150^{\circ}C$ during 48 hours. Consequently, the ageing actions of beeswaxed Hanji were even faster than that of Hanji. The optimum dewaxed amounts from beeswaxed Hanji was also obtained in pressure of $40\;kg_f$ under heating conditions.

  • The traditional sizing treatment for the Hanji is performed to give the following functions. Those are to stabilize the paint of the painting, to prevent the paint of painting and moisture from smearing into the painting itself, to prevent the paint of the painting and moisture from passing to the lining paper, and to make the colors of painting match the surrounding. This study analyzed a result of the effect of Hanji sizing characteristic according to glue and alum mixing ratio and applying times, affects to pigments of painting and fastness of Hanji using accelerated aging test. As a result of color measurement of sizing treated Hanji, the concentration of glue and the number of application increased, the brightness and the $L^*$ value decreased but the yellowness index increased.

  • This paper deals with the development of computational schemes for the dynamic analysis of flexible and nonlinear multibody systems. Different from the existing method, this paper introduces the quaternion algebra to develop the equation of the conservation of energy. Simultaneously, Rodrigues parameters are used to express the finite rotation for the proposed scheme. The proposed energy scheme is derived such that it provides unconditionally stable conditions for the nonlinear problems. Several examples of dynamic systems are presented which illustrate the efficiency and accuracy of the developed energy schemes.

  • In this study, we aimed to analyze the chemical changes that occur in Korean paper in an accelerated deterioration environment of 105℃. We selected the Korean paper produced with different types of cooking agents (plant lye, Na2CO3) and during different manufacturing seasons (winter, summer). The degree of deterioration of the Korean paper was confirmed by measuring the brightness, yellowness, and pH level, and the degree of change in each vibrational region of cellulose as deterioration progressed through infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. The FT-IR analysis showed that, as deterioration progressed, the absorbance of the amorphous region in cellulose decreased, whereas the absorbance of the crystalline region slightly increased. X-Ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and Raman spectroscopy were performed to verify the changes in the crystalline and amorphous regions in cellulose indicated by the FT-IR results. Furthermore, the crystallinity index (CI) was calculated; it showed a slight increase after deterioration; therefore, CI was confirmed to follow the same trend as that observed for absorbance in the FT-IR results. In addition, as a result of Raman spectroscopic analysis, the degree of decomposition of the amorphous region in the cellulose under the manufacturing conditions was confirmed by the fluorescence measured after the deterioration.

  • The document archives like official documents, books, maps and historic paper artifacts are primarily based on the organic cellulosic materials. As the passage of time, these organic cellulosic materials are slowly deteriorated by various aging factors, like light, polluted air and biological fungi. Many researchers have been carried out the examination method of deteriorating origins, the mechanism of aging hysteresis, and the preserving method of archival materials. One of the most simple and easiest ways for conservation of organic archival documents is the proper storage under environmental control. Corrugated board for archival quality container has been developed and already used in advanced country, like Japan, USA, German, UK and Europe. In case of Korea, corrugated board for archival quality container has been used a decade ago, but totally imported. This study was tried to develop the corrugated board for archival quality container. Liner and corrugated medium were specially produced and finally manufactured to E flute corrugated board. The physical and strength properties of permanent base paper and corrugated board were evaluated, and compared with imported corrugated board. 4 kinds of corrugating adhesives were considered various in order to investigate optimum adhesive for flute development between liner and corrugating medium, and evaluate adhesion strength under conditions of storage and curing temperatures.

  • The aim of this study is to analyze the research trends on Hanji (Korean traditional paper) in the academic literatures based on the purpose, content, and findings of various studies, and to present a direction for future research. Research papers published in 12 academic journals over the past 51 years (1965-2016) were collected using 167 key-words for the search, and of them, 178 papers were selected for analysis. Statistical analysis of these papers based on year, research content, and discipline to understand and quantify the research trend. Revealed that the frequency of the published research paper was generally proportional by number of research projects in domestic government departments. They also indicated that while there were several studies on property valuation or functionality improvement of Hanji based on experiments, research was lacking in the areas of observation, analysis, case studies, and status survey of Hanji. The present study provides basic data for establishing the direction of research on Hanji.
