  • The estimation of the remaining life for the aged components in power plant as well as chemical and peroleum plants has been recently coberned. The raw materials used in this syudy are the 1Cr-1Mo-0.25V rotor steel which intensified P and S compositions along with the nominal compositions of ASTM A470 standard. Five kinds of specimens with the different degradation levels were prepared by isothermal aging teat treatment at $630^{\circ}C$ The mechanical properties and fatigue strength of virgin and aged 1Cr-1Mo-0.25V rotor steel have been inbestigated through the hardness, tensile, fatigue test, SEM fractograph and EDS analysis at room temperature. Thus, the data of aged specimens were compared with those of virgin specimen to evaluate the aging effects. The main results obtained in this study are as follows; The decrease of the hardness due to degradation was distinguished until 50, 000hrs simulated service time. And is was confirmed that the considerable amount of P, Mn, Cr and S was precipitated at the grain boundary of aged material through the SEM and EDS analysis. The fatigue strength of 25, 000, 50, 000, 75, 000 and 100, 000hrs aged material was decreased 29.5%, 24.4%, 28.6%, 35.7% than that of virgin material at $10^7$ cycles of room temperature. The major cracks of virgin and aged materials initiated at the inclusions including Si, P and Mn compositions which were located at the outer periphery of the specimen.

  • Background: Increasing breast cancer (BC) incidence rates have been reported from India; causal factors for this increased incidence are not understood and diagnosis is mostly in advanced stages. Trivandrum exhibits the highest BC incidence rates in India. This study aimed to estimate trends in incidence by age from 2005-2014, to predict rates through 2020 and to assess the stage at diagnosis of BC in Trivandrum. Materials and Methods: BC cases were obtained from the Population Based Cancer Registry, Trivandrum. Distribution of stage at diagnosis and incidence rates of BC [Age-specific (ASpR), crude (CR) and age-standardized (ASR)] are described and employed with a joinpoint regression model to estimate average annual percent changes (AAPC) and a Bayesian model to estimate predictive rates. Results: BC accounts for 31% (2681/8737) of all female cancers in Trivandrum. Thirty-five percent (944/2681) are <50 years of age and only 9% present with stage I disease. Average age increased from 53 to 56.4 years (p=0.0001), CR (per $10^5$ women) increased from 39 (ASR: 35.2) to 55.4 (ASR: 43.4), AAPC for CR was 5.0 (p=0.001) and ASR was 3.1 (p=0.001). Rates increased from 50 years. Predicted ASpR is 174 in 50-59 years, 231 in > 60 years and overall CR is 80 (ASR: 57) for 2019-20. Conclusions: BC, mostly diagnosed in advanced stages, is rising rapidly in South India with large increases likely in the future; particularly among post-menopausal women. This increase might be due to aging and/or changes in lifestyle factors. Reasons for the increased incidence and late stage diagnosis need to be studied.

  • Purpose. The aim of this study is to compare the hardness according to the conditions of metal alloys. Moreover, the correlation between the cast crown hardness before and after wear testing and the degree of wear for each dental alloy was assessed. Materials and Methods. Cast crowns of three metal alloys (Co-Cr, gold, and Ni-Cr alloys) opposing smooth-surface monolithic zirconia were used. The Vickers microhardness of the ingot (which did not undergo wear testing) and the cast crown before and after wear testing were measured for each alloy. Two-way ANOVA and Scheffé tests were used to compare the measured hardness values. Moreover, the Pearson correlation coefficient was used to evaluate the relationship between the surface hardness and the wear of the cast crown (α=.05). Results. There was no significant difference in the hardness before and after wear testing for the gold alloy (P>.05); however, the hardness of the worn surface of the cast crown increased compared to that of the cast crown before the wear tests of Ni-Cr and Co-Cr alloys (P<.05). Furthermore, there was no correlation between the wear and hardness of the cast crown before and after wear testing for all three metal alloys (P>.05). Conclusion. There was a significant difference in hardness between dental alloys under the same conditions. No correlation existed between the surface hardness of the cast crown before and after wear testing and the wear of the cast crown.

  • The objective of this study was to examine the effect of temperature abuse prior to cold storage on changes in quality and metabolites of frozen/thawed beef loin. The aerobic packaged samples were assigned to three groups: refrigeration (4℃) (CR); freezing (-18℃ for 6 d) and thawing (20±1℃ for 1 d), followed by refrigeration (4℃) (FT); temperature abuse (20℃ for 6 h) prior to freezing (-18℃ for 6 d) and thawing (20±1℃ for 1 d), followed by refrigeration (4℃) (AFT). FT and AFT resulted in higher volatile basic nitrogen (VBN) values than CR (p<0.05), and these values rapidly increased in the final 15 d. Cooking loss decreased significantly with an increase in the storage period (p<0.05). In addition, cooking loss was lower in the FT and AFT groups than in the CR owing to water loss after storage (p<0.05). A scanning electron microscope (SEM) revealed that frozen/thawed beef samples were influenced by temperature abuse in the structure of the fiber at 15 d. Metabolomic analysis showed differences among CR, FT, and AFT from partial least square discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) based on proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) profiling. The treatments differed slightly, with higher FT than AFT values in several metabolites (phenylalanine, isoleucine, valine, betaine, and tyrosine). Overall, temperature abuse prior to freezing and during thawing of beef loin resulted in accelerated quality changes.

  • The treatment performance of ozonation and three types of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) such as $O_3/H_2O_2$, $O_3/UV$, $O_3/H_2O_2/UV$ was experimentally investigated for the treatment of refractory synthetic dye wastewater. The removal efficiency of $COD_{cr}$, color and biodegradability ($BOD_5/COD_{cr}$) were relatively evaluated in each treatment unit with simulated dye wastewater. Optimal operational conditions of pH, temperature, dosage and circulation flow rate were also investigated. All suggested processes revealed an effectiveness for the removal of color within a short operational time, moreover, $O_3/H_2O_2/UV$ process showed the highest $COD_{cr}$ removal and biodegradability enhancement among proposed oxidation process.

  • PURPOSE. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the amount of marginal gap with two different substructure materials using identical margin preparations. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Twenty stainless steel models with a chamfer were prepared with a CNC device. Marginal gap measurements of the galvano copings on these stainless steel models and Co-Cr copings obtained by a laser-sintering method were made with a stereomicroscope device before and after the cementation process and surface properties were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A dependent t-test was used to compare the mean of the two groups for normally distributed data, and two-way variance analysis was used for more than two data sets. Pearson's correlation analysis was also performed to assess relationships between variables. RESULTS. According to the results obtained, the marginal gap in the galvano copings before cementation was measured as, on average, $24.47{\pm}5.82{\mu}m$ before and $35.11{\pm}6.52{\mu}m$ after cementation; in the laser-sintered Co-Cr structure, it was, on average, $60.45{\pm}8.87{\mu}m$ before and $69.33{\pm}9.03{\mu}m$ after cementation. A highly significant difference (P<.001) was found in marginal gap measurements of galvano copings and a significant difference (P<.05) was found in marginal gap measurements of the laser-sintered Co-Cr copings. According to the SEM examination, surface properties of laser sintered Co-Cr copings showed rougher structure than galvano copings. The galvano copings showed a very smooth surface. CONCLUSION. Marginal gaps values of both groups before and after cementation were within the clinically acceptable level. The smallest marginal gaps occurred with the use of galvano copings.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of thermocycling on the shear bond strength of Co-Cr alloy to denture base resin. PMMA denture base resin such as heat-cured $Vertex-RS^{(R)}$, self-cured $Vertex-SC^{(R)}$ and 4-META denture base resin such as heat-cured $Meta-Dent^{(R)}$, self-cured $Meta-Fast^{(R)}$ was bonded to Co-Cr alloy. Samples were divided into 3 groups : no thermocycling group as control, thermocycling between $5^{\circ}C\;and\;55^{\circ}C$ with 15 second dwell time as group 1, thermocycling with 1 minute dwell time as group 2. The shear bond strength was measured and the interface between metal and resin was observed by SEM. The results were as follows. 1. The shear bond strength decreased significantly according to thermocycling and dwell time(P<0.001). 2. The bond strength of Co-Cr alloy and 4-META denture base resin was significantly higher than that of Co-Cr alloy and PMMA denture base resin(P<0.001) 3. In SEM, there was no gap in control group, but there was much and large gap in group 1, 2. The longer dwell times, the lower bond strength. PMMA denture base resin had more gap than 4-META denture base resin in the interface. These results revealed that thermocycling decreased the bond strength between Co-Cr alloy and denture base resin and dwell time of thermocycling changed the effect of thermocycling. The results suggested that oral temperature change affect the bond strength of prosthesis.

  • A $3{\times}4$ (chromium and L-carnitine) experiment was designed to investigate the single and interactive effects of adding yeast Cr and L-carnitine to corn-soybean meal diets on lipid metabolism of broiler chickens. Four hundred and eighty one-day-old avian chickens were randomly allocated to 12 treatments of 40 each for 7 weeks. Levels of adding Cr were 0, 400, $600{\mu}g/kg$ and those of Lcarnitine was 0, 30, 50, 100 mg/kg, respectively. The result showed that adding $600{\mu}g/kg$ Cr or 100 mg/kg L-carnitine alone had better regulative effects on fat and cholesterol metabolism than lower adding levels. Effects were more significant at the end of the experiment. There were significantly interactive effects between Cr and L-carnitine on triaclyglycerol, whole cholesterol, HDL, dissociating FFA, and blood glucose, cholesterol and triaclyglycerol of liver, and cholesterol of chest muscle at the end of experiment (p=0.0001-0.0315). But Cr or L-carnitine had no significant effect on growth performance of broiler chickens (p>0.05).
