  • The low temperature anionic copolymerization of p-tolylisocyanate ($M_1$) with n-hexylisocyanate ($M_2$) in DMF was carried out with NaCN. Copolymers were characterized by osmometry and I. R. spectrophotometry. Also copolymer composition was analyzed by spectral measurements. The behavior of this copolymerization system was the type of less ideal, that is the $M_2$ prefers to react exclusively with the same kind of species. The stress-strain behavior of the copolymer obtained from equimolar comonomer feed exhibited somewhat brittle or rigid character.

  • To probe the geometrical effects of cyclopropyl moiety on the stabilization of an adjacent cation center, chemical shift of 2-p-fluorophenyl-8,9-dehydro-2-adamantyl cation (3) was compared with that of 5-p-fluorophenyl-2,4-dehydro-5-homoadamantyl cation (4). Difference between the chemical shift of 8,9-dehydro-2-adamantyl cation 3 and that of 2,4-dehydro-5-adamantyl cation 4 is 5.1 ppm (${\Delta}{\Delta}{\delta}$). We conclude, therefore, that ion 3 is about 3.82 kcal more stadble than ion 4 of which rigid carbon skeleton requires significant distortion of the cyclopropane ring from the ideal bisected conformation. The energy difference between these cations can be calculated by Taft-Relationship$^8$ on the basis of chemical shift.

  • The purpose of this study was to obtain an understanding of the effect of regular exercise on obesity indices, the psychosocial wellbeing index, dietary factors and exercise regularity among 146 healthy mothers and 146 their daughters. "Mother" subjects were divided into two groups classified as regular exercise group(REG) and none exercise group(NEG). The exercise regularity of REG's daughters(30.8%) and of NEG's daughters (2.0%) was significantly different(p<0.001). The Obesity Indices(Body Mass Index (BMI), Waist Hip Ratio(WHR) and Percentage of Ideal Body Weight(PIBW)) of NEG's daughters were significantly higher than those of REG's daughters(p<0.001). But the psychosocial wellbeing index was not significantly different between REG's daughters and NEG's daughters. Intake of total energy, protein, fat, Ca, niacin and Fe were significantly different(p<0.001) between REG's daughters and NEG's daughters. Especially, vitamin C intake of REG's daughters was significantly higher than that of NEG's daughters(p<0.001). The exercise regularity of mothers was mainly related with Obesity Indices and nutrient intake in their daughters. Therefore, it might be necessary to maintain exercise regularity to prevent obesity and diet related problems in mothers and their daughters.

  • The heterologous expression of the Streptomyces natural product (NP) biosynthetic gene cluster (BGC) has become an attractive strategy for the activation, titer improvement, and refactoring of valuable and cryptic NP BGCs. Previously, a Streptomyces artificial chromosomal vector system, pSBAC, was applied successfully to the precise cloning of large-sized polyketide BGCs, including immunosuppressant tautomycetin and antibiotic pikromycin, which led to stable and comparable production in several heterologous hosts. To further validate the pSBAC system as a generally applicable heterologous expression system, the daptomycin BGC of S. roseosporus was cloned and expressed heterologously in a model Streptomyces cell factory. A 65-kb daptomycin BGC, which belongs to a non-ribosomal polypeptide synthetase (NRPS) family, was cloned precisely into the pSBAC which resulted in 28.9 mg/l of daptomycin and its derivatives in S. coelicolor M511(a daptomycin non-producing heterologous host). These results suggest that a pSBAC-driven heterologous expression strategy is an ideal approach for producing low and inconsistent Streptomyces NRPS-family NPs, such as daptomycin, which are produced low and inconsistent in native host.

  • M74 is a nearby face-on spiral galaxy that hosts three core-collapse supernovae (SNe) : SN Ic 2002ap, SN II-P 2003gd, and SN II-P 2013ej. Therefore it is an ideal target to investigate the properties of the core-collapse SNe and to improve the calibration of Type II-P SNe as a standardizable candle. However, its distance is not well known. We present a new distance estimate to M74 based on the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB). From the photometry of archival F555W and F814W images taken with the Hubble Space Telescope, we derive the TRGB to be at $ITRGB=26.13{\pm}0.02$ and the distance modulus to be $30.04{\pm}0.04$ (random) ${\pm}0.12$ (systematic) (corresponding to a linear distance, $10.19{\pm}0.14{\pm}0.56Mpc$). With this result, we calibrate the standardized candle method of SNe II-P. From the absolute magnitude of SN 2003gd corrected for its expansion velocity and reddening, we derive the value of the Hubble constant, $H0=72{\pm}6{\pm}7km\;s-1\;Mpc-1$. It is in agreement with the uncertainty with the recent estimates based on the luminosity calibration of Type Ia SNe.

  • In [4], the authors show that if ${\mathbb{X}}$ is a ${\mathbb{k}}-configuration$ in ${\mathbb{P}}^2$ of type ($d_1$, ${\ldots}$, $d_s$) with $d_s$ > $s{\geq}2$, then ${\Delta}H_{m{\mathbb{X}}}(md_s-1)$ is the number of lines containing exactly $d_s-points$ of ${\mathbb{X}}$ for $m{\geq}2$. They also show that if ${\mathbb{X}}$ is a ${\mathbb{k}}-configuration$ in ${\mathbb{P}}^2$ of type (1, 2, ${\ldots}$, s) with $s{\geq}2$, then ${\Delta}H_{m{\mathbb{X}}}(m{\mathbb{X}}-1)$ is the number of lines containing exactly s-points in ${\mathbb{X}}$ for $m{\geq}s+1$. In this paper, we explore a standard ${\mathbb{k}}-configuration$ in ${\mathbb{P}}^2$ and find that if ${\mathbb{X}}$ is a standard ${\mathbb{k}}-configuration$ in ${\mathbb{P}}^2$ of type (1, 2, ${\ldots}$, s) with $s{\geq}2$, then ${\Delta}H_{m{\mathbb{X}}}(m{\mathbb{X}}-1)=3$, which is the number of lines containing exactly s-points in ${\mathbb{X}}$ for $m{\geq}2$ instead of $m{\geq}s+1$.

  • Delivery of DNA vaccines to airway mucosa would be an ideal method for mucosal immunization. However, there have been few reports of a suitable gene delivery system. In this study we used a cationic emulsion to immunize mice via the intranasal route with pCMV-S coding for Hepatitis B virus surface antigen (HBsAg). Complexing pCMV-S with a cationic emulsion dramatically enhanced HBsAg expression in both nasal tissue and lung, and was associated with increases in the levels of HBs-specific Abs in serum and mucosal fluids, of cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) in the spleen and cervical and iliac lymph nodes, and of delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) against HBsAg. In contrast, very weak humoral and cellular immunities were observed following immunization with naked DNA. In support of these observations, a higher proliferative response of spleenocytes was detected in the group immunized with the emulsion/pCMV-S complex than in the group immunized with naked pCMV-S. These findings may facilitate development of an emulsion-mediated gene vaccination technique for use against intracellular pathogens that invade mucosal surfaces.
