Purpose: This study examined the effects of the type of video contents used for action observations on the ability to control posture. Methods: The participants were 48 healthy adults. The two hands of the participants were crossed on both shoulders, and the other foot was placed in a straight line in front of the target to allow them to watch a video of the monitor. The videos were presented in random order with three video contents (natural, stable balance posture, and unstable balance posture) consisting of 30 seconds each. A 15-second resting time was given between each video. During action observation using various video content forms, the posture control ability was measured using a TekScan MetScan® system. Results: The results revealed statistically significant differences in the area of movement and the distance by COP and distance by the type of action-observation videos, and the distance by the anteroposterior and mediolateral sides (p<0.05). The stable balance posture and unstable balance posture video showed significant differences in the distance by the COP, anteroposterior, and mediolateral distance. (p<0.05) Conclusion: This study suggests that choosing the contents of the videos is important during action-observation training, and action-observation training can help improve postural control.
Physiological changes in thoroughbred racehorses during the race were investigated by measuring concentrations of metabolites and exercise-related hormones before and after a race. The conversion point from anaerobic to aerobic exercise during the race was estimated subsequently. Blood samples were taken from the jugular vein of 53 thoroughbreds at different times -three h before and 45 min after- for measuring the concentrations of glucose, non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), lactate, uric acid, ammonia, insulin, adrenocorticotrophin (ACTH) and cortisol according to the race distance. In accordance with the race distance, each metabolite increased in concentration compared with the level before the race. The level of glucose, in particular, increased from $56.18{\pm}3.20$ mg/dl before the race to $148.82{\pm}8.82$ mg/dl after the race for horses that raced 1,400 m, showing a significant increase of 165% (p<0.001). The concentration of NEFA rose from $76.77{\pm}5.59$ uEq/L to $335.85{\pm}35.39$ uEq/L, up 337% (p<0.01) after a 1,400 m race. Exercise-related hormones also showed similar changes. The level of insulin dropped the most in horses that raced 1,400 m, by 42%, from $0.97{\pm}0.18$ to $0.56{\pm}0.05\;{\mu}g/L$ (p<0.5); however, ACTH and cortisol jumped significantly at 1,800 m, from $20.17{\pm}2.12$ to $551.45{\pm}91.33$ pg/ml (p<0.5) and $1.13{\pm}0.16$ to $5.66{\pm}0.45\;{\mu}g/dl$ (p<0.01), respectively, representing the highest increase. Therefore, based on the changes in glucose, NEFA and insulin levels before and after the race, it was concluded that the race distance of 1,400 m represents the point where racehorses make a conversion from anaerobic to aerobic exercise.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to measure and evaluate changes of visual responses in viewing a 2D and 3D (three-dimensional) image. Methods: The subjects were 44 college students aged 19 to 25 years with normal binocular vision. The visual responses measured were CA/C (convergence accommodation/convergence) ratio, convergence-induced PD(interpupillary distance), accommodative responses, perceived distance in viewing a 3D image. Results: Convergence and accommodative responses in viewing the 3D image were significantly larger (p<0.05) than in 2D. A moderate positive correction was found between CA/C ratio and accommodative response (r = 0.477, p = 0.001). It was indicated that smaller PD had larger depth perception. Convergence in viewing the 3D image was significantly larger (p<0.05) than that at cognitive distance. Conclusions: The visual fatigue may be more intense in larger CA/C ratio and smaller PD when viewing 3D images.
Preliminary ecological environmental assessments including physico-chemical constituents, water quality, fish fauna analysis, physical habitat health, and ecological health assessment were conducted as a primary step for Jeungchon micro-habitat ecosystem restoration in 2012. Water chemistry analysis of conductivity, dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll-a and etc. indicated that there were no significant differences(p < 0.05) among 6 sites between the headwaters and downstream. Multi-metric model analysis of Qualitative Habitat Evaluation Index(QHEI) showed that brooklets were at "good condition" as a mean QHEI of 158.7(n = 6) and the longitudinal differences of the model values between the sites were minor(QHEI range: 153 - 165). Total fish species and the number of individuals were 12 and 481, respectively, and dominant species were Zacco platypus(49.5%) and Zacco koreanus(36.8%). Tolerance guild analysis showed that the proportion of sensitive species($S_S$) had a negative linear function[$S_S=86.35-0.31(D_H)$; $R^2$ = 0.892, p < 0.01] with a distance from the headwaters, while the proportion of tolerant species($T_S$) had a positive linear function($R^2$ = 0.950, F = 90.28, p < 0.001) with the distance. Trophic feeding guild analysis showed that the proportion of insectivore species($I_n$) had a negative linear function($R^2$ = 0.934, p < 0.01) with a distance from the headwaters, while the proportion of omnivore species($O_m$) had a positive linear function($R^2$ = 0.958, p < 0.001) with the distance. Index of Biological Integrity(IBI) model, based on fish assemblages, showed a "fair condition" as a mean IBI of 23(n = 6), and there was a distinct differences of ecological health between the headwaters(S1 = 30; "good condition") and the downstreams(S6 = 14; "poor condition"). Overall, the preliminary environmental impact assessments suggest that water quality, physical habitat conditions(QHEI model), and ecological health(IBI model) were maintained well, even if the state was not an excellent conditions.
Purpose: This study examined the effect on postural control during the stimulation of haptic touch with fingertip on the stable surface at quiet standing posture, squat flexion stage, 60 degrees squat stage and squat extension stage. Methods: The postural sway was measured on the force platform, while 30 subjects were squatting, under three different haptic touch conditions (No Touch [NT], Light Touch [LT], Heavy Touch [HT]), above the touch pad in front of their body midline. Three different haptic touch conditions were divided into 1) NT condition; squatting as right index fingers held above the touch pad, 2) LT condition (<1N); squatting as the touch pad was in contact with right index fingers pulp with a pressure not exceeding 1N and 3) HT condition; squatting as subjects were allowed to use the touch pad for mechanical support by transmitting onto it with as much force, choosing with their index fingers. Results: There was significant decrease in LT, rather than that of NT (p<0.01), and in HT, rather than that of LT (p<0.01), as the results of the distance and velocity of center of pressure (COP) in mediolateral direction at quiet standing position. In anteroposterior direction, the distance and velocity of COP in LT and HT showed significant decrease, when compared to that of the data of NT (p<0.01). There was no significant difference between the 3 conditions (NT, LT, and HT), with respect to the distance and velocity of COP in mediolateral direction, during dynamic balance (squat flexion stage, squat extension stage) (p>0.05). In anteroposterior direction, the results of the distance and velocity of COP in HT showed significant decrease when compared to that of the data of NT (p<0.05). Conclusion: Light touch, during the task, decreased the postural sway at static balance. The results suggest that haptic touch should be applied, appropriately, because it varies the effects according to different conditions.
Purpose: Multiple rib fracture (MRF) and a hemopneumothorax accompany with most blunt chest traumas. We aimed to analyze the factors increasing the probability of a hemopneumothorax. In addition, other injuries accompanying MRF were analyzed. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 154 mutiple rib fracture patients who visited our hospital between January 2005 and December 2007. The medical records were reviewed for sex, age, mechanism of injury, location, number of fractures, distance of dislocated rib fragments, and presence of complications. We measured the distance of bony dislocations by using the PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System). Results: The average number of rib fractures was $3.7{\pm}2.1$, and the number of rib fractures significantly influenced the incidence of a hemothorax (p<0.001). The risk of a hemothorax was increased in a bilateral MRF compared to a unilateral MRF (p=0.027). The distance of dislocated rib fragments influenced the probability of a hemothorax significantly (p=0.018), and subcutaneous emphysema and lung contusion were significantly associated with a pneumothorax (p=0.021, p=0.036). Conclusion: The number of MRFs did not influence the risk for a pneumothorax, but did influence the risk for a hemothorax. The laterality, distance of dislocation, also had an influence on the risk for a hemothorax. Also, subcutaneous emphysema and lung contusion were increased in cases with a pneumothorax. We must consider the possibility of a hemothorax even when the initial chest X-ray shows no evidence of a hemothorax. If a lung contusion is present, then an occult pneumothorax must be considered.
Background: To determine the reasons and factors that contribute to the cancellations of shoulder surgeries at a tertiary referral center and to analyze the characteristics of these patients. Methods: Patients scheduled for shoulder surgery from June 2017 to July 2019 were allocated to a surgery group (n=224) or a cancellation group (n=96). These groups were compared with respect to patient characteristics, types of surgery, distance from patient's home to the hospital, traveling time to the hospital, and waiting period before surgery. Reasons for cancellation and responses were acquired using a telephone interview and were subsequently analyzed. Results: The cancellation group was older, had a less frequent history of trauma, and had a lower proportion of patients undergoing arthroscopic rotator cuff repair than the surgery group (p=0.009, p=0.014, and p=0.017, respectively). In addition, mean distance from the patients' homes to the hospital and preoperative waiting time were both longer in the cancellation group (p=0.001 and p<0.01, respectively). The most common reason given for cancellation was another medical condition (28.1%). Conclusions: Older age, need for arthroscopic rotator cuff repair surgery, longer distance from the patient's home to the hospital, and longer waiting period significantly increased the chance of cancellation. The main reason for canceling surgery was a concurrent medical condition. Therefore, identification of other medical conditions in advance is an important consideration when surgeons recommend shoulder surgery to patients. Surgeons should also consider patient's age, type of surgery, distance from the hospital, and waiting time when assessing the possibility of surgery cancellation.
In this study, the sterilization ability of S. aureus and P. aeruginosa was evaluated using a plasma generator with a flexible electrode structure. Both strains were prepared at a concentration of 1.5×106 CFU/mL and inoculated and spread evenly on two medium plates. The medium were kept at a distance of 3 cm and 9 cm from the plasma generator and were plasma discharged from 30 sec to 10 minutes. The growth of colonies on the media, were subsequently compared with the control group. The mean colonies of S. aureus formed at a 3 cm distance were 9.2×102 (log value 2.96) CFU/mL for the 5 min discharge period and 8.0×10 (1.90) CFU/mL for the 10 min discharge period. When the medium was exposed for 5 min and 10 min at a 9 cm distance, the mean colonies of S. aureus formed were 2.16×103 (3.33) and 2.4×102 (2.38) CFU/mL, respectively. The medium containing P. aeruginosa kept at a 3 cm distance and exposed to 3, 5, 10-minute discharge, did not form any colonies. When kept at a 9 cm distance for 3 minutes, 6.0×102 (2.78) CFU/mL mean colonies were formed but no colonies were formed at exposure periods of 5 and 10 minutes. This enhanced sterilization effect was confirmed in experiments of S. aureus and P. aeruginosa using TiO2.
The purpose of this study was to identify the variant of Platanus occidentalis, whose bark looks white, also can be classified as P. occidentalis and to examine its genetic difference from the general P. occidentalis. For the variant identification of P. occidentalis, SNP and ISSR analysis were used in this study. Thirteen samples of P. occidentalis white variant were collected in Cheongju and 24 samples of normal P. occidentalis obtained in Cheongju, Pyongtaek, Ansan, Suwon, Osan and Jincheon area. ITS 1 and ITS 2 sequences of white variants were identical with those of P. occidentalis. We could not find any sequence difference between normal and white P. occidentalis. So we concluded that the white variant belongs to normal P. occidentalis even their bark is white and peeled easily. By ISSR test, 98 amplicons were acquired using 10 primers. P. occidentalis and white P. occidentalis showed different band patterns from the UBC #834. According to the result of Nei (1979)'s genetic distance analysis, the members of white P. occidentalis were grouped more tightly than the members of normal P. occidentalis. The UPGMA dendrogram shows that the variant and P. occidentalis divided widely into two groups. These results show that the phenotype of P. occidentalis white variant is caused by genetic factors rather than by environmental factors.

Purpose : The study was designed to identify the change of body alignment according to surface during walking with backpack. Methods : Healthy twenty people(10 men & 10 women) participated in this study. The exclusion criteria were orthopedic and neurologic disease. Initial alignment measurements were performed. Results were evaluated by angle and range from earlobe to acromion, acromion to malleolus and earlobe to malleolus in the GPS system. Results : On the hard surface, the distance and angle from malleolus to earlobe increased after walking with backpack which is 20 % of weight(p<.05). In addition the distance from malleolus to acromion and the angle from earlobe to acromion increased(p<.05). On the soft surface, on the other hand, the distance and angle from malleolus to earlobe decreased after walking with backpack which is 20 % of weight(p<.05). There was no relationship between the change of the surface and the body's alignment(p>.05). Conclusion : Consequently, the body alignment was changed by backpack which is 20 % of weight, but body alignment wasn't changed by the surface. So more study need to be surveyed regard of this.
