  • In this work, $TiO_2$ nanoparticles were synthesized using $N_2-diluted$ and Oxygen-enriched coflow hydrogen diffusion flames. The effect of flame temperature on the characteristics of the formed $TiO_2$ nanoparticles was investigated. The measured maximum centerline temperature of the flame ranged from 2,103 K for oxygen-enriched flame to 1,339 K for $N_2-diluted$ flame. The visible flame length and the height of the main reaction zone were characterized by direct photographs. The characteristics of synthesized $TiO_2$ nanoparticles were analyzed by SEM and TEM images. From these images, it was evident that the formed nanoparticles were divided into two sorts. In the higher temperature region, over the 1,700 K, $TiO_2$ nanoparticles having spherical shapes with diameters about 60 nm were synthesized. In the lower temperature region, below the 1,600 K, the diameters of formed nanoparticles having unclear boundaries were ranged from 35 - 50 nm.

  • Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are produced in the metabolic process of oxygen in cells. The superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) in cells systemize the antioxidant enzymes to control the oxidative stress. Genistein is one of the isoflavonoids, and its role in controlling cellular oxidative stress is presently the active issue at question. In this study; we analyzed genistein-induced survival rates of the CHO-K1 cells, activities of antioxidant enzymes, ROS levels, and expression levels of antioxidant enzyme genes in order to investigate the effect of genistein on cellular ROS production and antioxidative systems in CHO-K1 cells. As results, the survival rate of cells was decreased as the dose of genistein increases (12.5${\sim}$200 ${\mu}$M). Genistein increased cellular ROS levels, while it reduced total SOD activities and the expression of CuZnSOD. In conclusion, we suggest that genistein may induce oxidative stress via down-regulation of SOD.

  • The effect of pretreatment on indium-tin oxide (ITO) electrodes has been rarely studied, although that on metal and carbon electrodes has been enormously done. The electrochemical and surface properties of ITO electrodes are investigated after 6 different pretreatments. The electrochemical behaviors for oxygen reduction, $Ru(NH_3){_6}^{3+}$ reduction, $Fe(CN){_6}^{3-}$ reduction, and p-hydroquinone oxidation are compared, and the surface roughness, hydrophilicity, and surface chemical composition are also compared. Oxygen reduction, $Fe(CN){_6}^{3-}$ reduction, and p-hydroquinone oxidation are highly affected by the type of the pretreatment, whereas $Ru(NH_3){_6}^{3+}$ reduction is almost independent of it. Interestingly, oxygen reduction is significantly suppressed by the treatment in an HCl solution. The changes in surface roughness and composition are not high after each pretreatment, but the change in contact angle is substantial in some pretreatments.

  • This article presents the experiments and considerations possible about gate etching in polysilicon when oxygen gas is added in chamber, We propose the novel study with optical emission spectroscopy in polysilicon etching. It is shown that added oxygen gases play an important role in enhencement of density in chlorine gases as a scavenger of silicon from SiCl$\_$x/. And a small amount of Si-O bonds are deposited and then the deposited thin film protect silicon dioxyde against reaction chlorine with silicon in SiO$_2$. Consequently, we can improve the selectivity of polysilicon the silicon dioxide, which is clearly explained in this model.

  • The oxygen consumption of fresh and aged slices of potato tuber was 40.6 and 168.0 ,$0_2$ $\mu$l/g fr $wt{\cdot}h$, respectively. After initial burst of oxygen consumption within 2 minutes(i.e., 40% for fresh and 12% for aged slices) in the treatmentof $50{\mu}M$ alantolactone, gradual decrease of respiration rate was observed during 3 hours of incubation. In case of the aged slices the initial burst of oxygen consumption was not observed by salicylhydroxamic acid (SHAM) or KCN. The combined effect of SHAM and alantolactone showed increase of 12%, while SHAM and KCN combination showed 60% decrease. In addition, the lipophilicity of cell membrane of onion inner epidermis was increased by lantolactone treatment. The results suggest that the primary effect of alantolactone on the cellular respiration may be associated with an alteration of lipophilic phase of cell membrane and a consequent increase of electron flow throuh the cytochrome system.

  • To show the effects of metallothionein (MT) on the activity of enzymes involved in the removal of reactive oxygen species, MT has been added to the assay systems of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase and peroxidase. We have used assay systems of SOD based on NADPH oxidation and nitrite formation from hydroxylammonium chloride as an assay of superoxide breakdown rate. The two assay systems showed different results at the high concentration of MT. MT showed the scavenging of superoxide in the SOD assay system in the presence and absence of SOD. MT added to the SOD assay system behaved as an activator of SOD, but apo-MT behaved as an inhibitor. When MT was added to the assay system in the presence of a fixed amount of SOD, the breakdown rate of superoxide increased. The effects of MT on the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide and the activity of catalase and peroxidase decomposing hydrogen peroxide were evaluated. MT decreased the activities of catalase and peroxidase. We have concluded that the function of MT as an antioxidant might effect the level of superoxide scavenging and not the level of hydrogen peroxide.

  • Effect of thickness on ZnO properties including the compositional ratio and crystallinity has been systematically investigated using a variety of characterization tools of x-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, x-ray fluorescence and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Interestingly, it was observed that ZnO films below 80 nm in thickness were in oxygen deficiency, while the oxygen ratio was increased in the films above the thickness, although the compositional ratio of ZnO film was not linearly varied with increasing film thickness. Also, ZnO crystallinity, which is characterized by (002) diffraction pattern, was clearly improved with increasing film thickness. The properties of ZnO film with different sputtering time and the nature of direct current reactive sputtering process were discussed in terms of compositional ratio, especially oxygen ratio in ZnO film.

  • In this study, the effect of scrap ratio on the mechanical properties of Zr alloys was studied. Oxygen content in the ingot cake increased rapidly with increasing fraction of scrap, which can be attributed to the surface oxide of scrap including small pieces of turning, chips, etc. Iron content did not increase much with the increasing addition of scrap, suggesting scrap materials was well reserved in the iron-free container. As-cast structure of Zr alloy with the scrap:sponge ratio displayed plate/or needle ${\alpha}$ phase and no appreciable change of the cast structure was observed with change of scrap fraction. The strength increases with increasing fraction of scrap, which can be attributed to the increase of oxygen content. The ductility decreased slightly with increase of scrap fraction. Dislocation-oxygen interaction is known to increase the strength at the expense of ductility. Ingot cake with intentionally added $Fe_2O_3$ exhibited the drastic decrease of the formability, even exhibited the brittle fracture behavior during rolling. The oxidation resistance, however, increased with the increase of scrap fraction because of high oxygen content, which may prevent more penetration and diffusion of oxygen into matrix.

  • Recent studies have shown methods of improving solar cell efficiency. Especially on single crystalline silicon wafer which is high-efficiency solar cell material that has been widely studied. Interstitial oxygen (Oi) is the main impurity in the Czochralski (Cz) growing method, and excess of this can form precipitates during cell fabrication. We have demonstrated the effect of Oi impurity and oxygen precipitation concentration of the wafer on Cz-silicon solar cell efficiency. The result showed a decrease in cell efficiency as Oi and oxygen precipitation increase. Moreover, we have found that the critical point of [Oi] to bring higher cell efficiency is at 14.5 ppma in non-existent Bulk Micro Defect (BMD).
