Labyrinth weir is a hydraulic structure that can maintain constant water depth and increase overflow rate by increasing overflow width of weir through complicated displacement of its cross section. The labyrinth weir can be widely applied to various hydraulic facilities such as dam spillway, irrigation facilities, and canal structures. To date, however, few labyrinth weirs were applied to hydraulic facilities in Korea. Hence, in-depth research on labyrinth weir is highly required to efficiently apply the labyrinth weir to hydraulic facilities. This study was performed to analyze the hydraulic characteristics according to triangle labyrinth weir using hydraulic model experiments. The hydraulic characteristics provided in this study, which make it feasible to increase the overflow rate, and are expected to be widely applied to design of hydraulic facilities such as dam spillway and irrigation system.
Flow characteristics occurring a side-weir overflow in rectangular channel is investigated in this study. A numerical model based on the two -dimensional shallow-water equations is employed to review the factors influencing on the side- weir overflow discharge and the change of flow depths and velocities. It is found that the discharge coefficient which has the most significant influence on the overflow is affected by geometric characteristics of a side-weir, Froude number of the main channel flow and the flow depth of the main channel at the starting point of a side-weir. And the discharge coefficient applicable to a practical design of a side-weir is proposed by deriving a relationship between Froude number of the main channel flow at the starting point of a side-weir and Froude number of the main channel flow.
The present study used the hydrodynamic numerical model, with the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations (RANS) as its governing equations, to analyze overflow characteristics such as the discharge coefficient of circular-crested weir and the flow velocity and pressure distribution of weir crest. The simulation results well reproduced the overflow characteristics of the overfall of circular-crested weir both qualitatively and quantitatively. As for the discharge coefficient, rational results were yielded by the discharge coefficient equation proposed by Hager(1985) in the $H_1/R_b<0.58$ and by the discharge coefficient equation proposed by Samani and Bagheri(2014) in the $H_1/R_b>0.58$, respectively. Because most existing discharge coefficient equations were developed by disregarding the effects of the approach velocity, when they are applied, it is necessary to evaluate the effects of the approach velocity on the overflow head beforehand.
In this study, the effectiveness of overflow improvement of weir was tested by conducting hydraulic experiments at the designated spot for installment of side weir under the condition of installment of hydraulic structures such as small reservoir in mainstream. The height of the reservoir was set up as a third of that of the weir, accordingly the rate of the height of the weir and the distance of the reservoir from the weir($B_h/L_b$) were 0.05, 0.025, 0.0167 each. As a result, overflows per unit width increased by 8.1%, 5.4% and 3.9% perspectively. A new discharge coefficient that adds $B_h/L_b$ as parameter to the existing discharge coefficient of trapezoidal broad crested side weir was suggested and the application of the new formula of discharge coefficient by comparing measured overflow with calculated overflow was identified.
In this study, we analyzed the flow characteristics in the wide-crested side weir of trapezoidal section by using a three dimensional numerical stimulation. From this study, as the Froude number increases in the main channel, the overflow discharge ratio and the discharge coefficient of lateral overflow tend to decrease. And it was also found that the increase of the lateral overflow reduces the channel discharge area in the downstream, and the size of recirculating zone is increasing in the opposite side of side weir. The stream-wise water surface on the side where the side weir is installed falls down rapidly in the weir starting point, gradually ascending, and rapidly rising at the end point. The reason why the water surface rapidly rises at the weir end point is because the weir end point hinders the flow.

A river fishway is a hydraulic structure enabling fish to overcome stream obstructions such as dams and weirs. The main aim of this paper is to investigate the collectibility of upstream-migrating fishes and hydraulic problems in pool-and-weir type fishway which has been established for upstream-migration at Namgang weir in the downstream of Namgang dam, and to grope for improvement measures which pool-and-weir type fishway can be switched to pool-and-partial weir type fishway through hydraulic field experiment. Exsisting fishway had problems which upstream-migrating fishes can not take a rest due to the seiche and vortex phenomena in pools and migrate to upstream because of height difference in entrance pool. In order to prevent hydraulically the seiche and vortex phenomena and establish rest area for fishes in each pool, we carried out hydraulic field experiments. In the fishway, it was to improve pool-and-weir into pool-and-partil weir, to decrease the height difference in entrance pool, and to reduce oriffice velocity of each pool. Also, we investigated fishes collectibility of after improving fishway for 6 days in September 2013. To resolve chronic problems(seiche-vortex phenomena and rest area for fishes), as weirs were remodeled into partial weir only which central part of weirs was part of non-overflow weir, we confirmed results that pool-and-weir type fishway could be switched to efficient pool-and-partial weir type fishway with relatively simple construction and low cost. Type-B which has the closed oriffices and the parts of non-overflow has the ideal conditions, but this conditions are limited to fishway of Namgang weir used in this study. Representative Ice-habor type fishway is pool-and-partial weir type fishway which has together parts of overflow and oriffices, and has excellent ability of upstream-migration. To switch from pool-and-weir type fishway to pool-and-partial weir type fishway, the size of oriffice has to be regulated by the discharge of fishway and the dimension on parts of non-overflow and overflow in weirs. Entrance pool is important facility which upstream-migrating fishes have to not only be collect but also charge with energy. In this study, entrance-pool is temporary and roughly-built, but fishes gather together more than the case of no entrance-pool. In the case of fishway which was protruded to downstream, as entrance of fishway turns toward or parallels to weir, the collectibility of fishway was excellent by attraction water.

The labyrinth weir can be defined that the plane shape of overflow part is not straight line and is a kind of weir having overflow length increased by changing its plane shape. Recently, the labyrinth weir can be widely applied to various hydraulic facilities such as dam spillway, irrigation facilities, and canal structures by increasing precipitation. This study was performed to analyze the hydraulic characteristics according to triangle labyrinth weir using hydraulic model experiments and finally estimate the discharge coefficients for triangle labyrinth weirs. The formulae of discharge coefficient provided in this study, which make it feasible to calculate the overflow rate by a coefficient of correlation. sum of residuals, MAPE(Mean Absolute Percentage Error), are expected to be widely applied to design of hydraulic facilities such as dam spillway and irrigation system.

The spillway type of small and midsize dams in Korea is almost overflow weir. To examine flood control capacity of overflow spillway, FLOW-3D was applied to Daesuho dam and analysis was focused on the discharge of dam spillway by changing weir shape. Overflow phases and discharges of linear labyrinth weir and curved labyrinth weir were compared with those of existing linear ogee weir. Hydraulic model experiment was performed to verify numerical result. Verification results showed that overflow behaviors and flow characteristics in the side channel by hydraulic model experiment and numerical simulation are well matched, and water surface elevation at side wall coincides with each other. When the reservoir elevation was increased up to design flood level, in case of the linear ogee weir the flow over the crest ran through smoothly in the side channel, whereas in cases of linear labyrinth weir and curved labyrinth weirs, the flow discharge was increased by 40 cms, and the flow over the weir crest, rotating counter-clockwise, was submerged in the side channel. The results of the water level-discharge curve revealed that labyrinth weir can increase discharge by 71% compared to the discharge of linear ogee weir at low reservoir elevation since it can have longer effective length. But as water surface elevation rises, the slope of water level-discharge curve of labyrinth weir becomes milder by submergence and nappe interference in the side channel.

The weirs built so far are mainly overflow type weirs overflowing to the upstream. Main advantages of overflow type weirs are, effective water resources management and easy design, construction and maintenance due to many accumulated studies. However, due to the special feature of the overflow type weir where water overflows through the upstream of the weir, the silt coming from the upstream is not discharged to the downstream of the weir. This increases the river bed and reduces the reservoir capacity, and as a result, the weir loses its function. A underflow type weir with a water gate has been implemented in order to solve such sediment deposit and weir maintenance problems. However due to the design problem of recently constructed underflow type weirs, the river bed of the downstream of a weir has been scoured. And this leds to a structural problem. In this study, the flow characteristics of overflow type weirs and underflow type weir, hydraulic jump length analysis depending on change of water depth and the amount of specific energy loss generated per unit length depending on a weir type have been compared and analyzed, for the effective design and management of the weirs. The experiment results show that, when identical upstream conditions of underflow type weir and an overflow type weir were maintained, the hydraulic jump length was up to twice longer with Fr(Froude number) 3.5 of the hydraulic jump length at the underflow type weir, and the hydraulic jump length gradually decreased as the downstream water depth increased. The comparative analysis result of the amount of specific energy loss generated per unit length showed that the amount of energy loss per unit length was twice higher for an overlfow type weir than a underflow type weir. Therefore, in case of a underflow type facility, an additional energy reduction facility is determined to be necessary for safety of water construction structures.

The small and medium sized dams have the fill dam type of a lot of occasions, which are often weak in cases of major floods. For this reason, although a countermeasure is in great need, due to the importance of the facilities and financial situations, no direct safety measures have been taken. In this study, in order to minimize construction expenditure for practical safety measures in cases of major floods, the overflow section of spillway has been analyzed focusing on how the overflow capacity will increase in the case of partially rebuilding a part of the overflow section of spillway favorable for hydraulic conditions. The labyrinth weir and movable weir was chosen for reconstruction models of the overflow section. Moreover, for analyzing the after-effects of the reconstruction, a small scale dam was temporarily chosen for various experiments such as the hydraulic model testing and the three dimension numerical evaluation through the use of Flow-3D.
