  • Rapid industrialization and urbanization have resulted in an increase in impervious areas and an increase in runoff, therefore, this causes more flooding and damage in urban areas. This study has analyzed the effects of improvements to the roughness coefficient in storm sewer pipes on flood runoff and outflow through rainfall-runoff simulations. The simulations are implemented by three scenarios to evaluate effects of improvements to the roughness coefficient for the improved length ratio to the total length, diameters and mainlines of sewer pipes. The size and length of the sewer mains are large and long to effectively increase the flow rate to the outlet, secure the passage discharge capacity of the pipe and reduce the overflow. It is effective for flood reduction that the improvement to roughness coefficient is first conducted in mainlines with longer lengths and larger diameters. The results from this study can provide a guideline for prioritizing of the sewer pipe replacement.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of the position of lake upon groundwater fluxes on a lake watershed, and to provide the guidance for the monitoring network design to survey the exchange relations between grondwater and lake water. Three kinds of hypothetical flow through lakes, which are located at the upper, middle, and lower portion of a watershed were considered. And groundwater flow for each case was numerically simulated under three-dimensional steady state conditions. As a result, it can be shown that: (1) The exchange between lake and groundwater in the case where a lake is located at lower portion on watershed shows more active than that for a lake located at upper portion. (2) The amounts of inflow from groundwater to a lake are less than the amounts of discharge to groundwater in a target lake watershed. (3) The rate of inflow and outflow of groundwater to a lake is increased as the lake is located at upper portion of a watershed. (4) The horizontal flux of groundwater occurred on the lake bed is more significantly active than the vertical flux.

  • This study performed 2-D(two-dimensional) hydrodynamic analysis using EFDC in the Nakdong River. For the simulation of the flood season and non-flood season, the measured data including water level, weir outflow and tributary inflow were used, and the accuracy and applicability of the model were verified by comparing the measured water level and computed one. In addition, statistical quantitative assessment of the model performance was performed by estimating PBIAS, RSR, and RMSE for the computed water level. Then, the average velocity for each section between weirs was calculated by applying constant discharge conditions, and it was compared and verified with the measured velocity by Hydrological Survey Center. In this study, a simple method for estimating the arrival time was proposed, and it is expected that it will be practically applicable in field practices such as flood forecasting and warning.

  • On steep hillslopes, saturation zone formations and subsurface flows were monitored through the observation systems of observation wells, tensiometers and trenches. By the 103 mm rain which had fallen on the hillslope with dry soil moisture, the saturation zone began to be formed at the top of hillslope during the rain and developed to be formed within a few hours after the end of rain on all hillslope. Subsurface water outflowed mainly from the soil profile of 0-40 cm depth, but did not outflow from the one of 40-80 cm depth. This saturation zone seemed to be formed by partially saturation of soil. This resulted for two reasons. Firstly, the saturation zone was formed by a smaller amount of rain than that required. Secondly the soil at a certain depth below the water table was unsaturated. Saturation zones formed by pre-rains responded rapidly to rains and subsurface water outflowed mainly from the soil profile of 40-80 cm depth simultaneously with the rising of the water level. The rates of subsurface discharge from the soil profile of 40-80 cm depth to the precipitation were related to the antecedent precipitation although the maximum water levels of saturation zone formed by four rains were similar.

  • The aim of this study is to quantify and characterize the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from paddy fields and crop fields in Tottori, Japan. DOC and ultraviolet (UV) absorption were measured in the filtrated water of each sample. The DOC concentration and the SUVA (specific UV absorption) of biodegradation analysis samples were determined around 50 days after their incubation. In the Fukui paddy fields, DOC concentration varied seasonally from 1.1 to $10.1mg\;Cl^{-1}$, becoming higher during heavy runoffs in April, a non-agriculture period. Variations in DOC concentration did not always correspond to rainfall, though. The Obadake paddy fields showed a DOC concentration pattern similar to that of the Fukui paddy fields. The daily DOC discharge per area in the Fukui (up), Fukui (down), Obadake (south) and Obadake (north) paddy fields influent from paddy fields were 0.02, 0.0161, 0.0135 and $0.0027kg\;a^{-1}day^{-1}$, respectively. These differences resulted from differences in agricultural types and customs of farmers according to paddy fields and other kinds of fields. Also, the SUVAs [which are indirect means to evaluate humic substances (hydrophobic fractions)] of the studied influent waters from paddy fields were generally lower than those of the influent waters from crop fields. Nonbiodegradable DOC accounted for 50.2 - 98% and 46.8 - 85.5% of the total DOC in the paddy fields and in the crop fields, respectively.

  • We studied the nitrogen behavior and budget of Lake Paldang from March to December 2008. The particulate nitrogen (PN) concentrations ranged from 7 to 13% of the total nitrogen concentration (TN) in the stream inflows, the downstream outflow, and the lake water. The nitrate nitrogen ($NO_3-N$) concentration ranged from 67 to 78% of the TN. In the three rivers of Lake Paldang, Gyeongan River (In3 site) had the highest average of the TN, 5.037 mgN/L, but North Han River (In2 site) had the lowest average TN, 1.683 mgN/L. South Han River (In1 site) had the average TN of 2.399 mgN/L. In the dam discharge, TN showed the average 2.063 mgN/L. In the lake water, L4 site (Gyeongan River area) had the highest average TN, 3.781 mgN/L, but L3 site (North Han River) had the lowest average TN, 1.587 mgN/L. Total input of nitrogen loads to Lake Paldang was about 30,875 ton/year in 2008. Inflow rivers contributed 30,643 ton/year (South Han River: 18,111 ton/year (59%), North Han River: 11,333 ton/year (37%), and Gyeongan River: 1,199 ton/year (4%)). The atmospheric deposition had 135 ton/year, the nitrogen release from the bottom sediments had 88 ton/year, and macrophytes had 9 ton/year. Total output of nitrogen loads from Lake Paldang was about 31,256 ton/year. The downstream from dam contributed 29,877 ton/year, and the sediment deposition was 1,379 ton/year.

  • The response of the CCCma coupled climate model to the imposition of LGM conditions is investigated. The global mean SAT and SST decrease by about $10^{\circ}C$ and $5.6^{\circ}C$ in the coupled model. Tropical SST decreases by $6.5^{\circ}C$, whereas CLIMAP reconstructions suggest that the tropics cool by only about $1.7^{\circ}C$, although the larger tropical cooling is consistent with the more recent proxy estimates. With the incorporation of a full ocean component, the coupled model gives a realistic spatial SST pattern, capturing features associated with ocean dynamics that are seen in the CLIMAP reconstructions. The larger decrease of the surface temperature in the model is associated with a reduction in global precipitation rate (about 15%). The tropical Pacific warm pool retreats to the west and a mean La $Ni\tilde{n}a$-like response is simulated with less precipitation over the central Pacific and more in the western tropical Pacific. The more arid ocean climate in the LGM results in an increase in SSS almost everywhere. This is particularly the case in the Arctic Ocean where large SSS increase is due to a decrease in river discharge to the Arctic Ocean associated with the accumulation of snow over the ice sheet, but in the North Atlantic by contrast SSS decreases markedly. This remarkable reduction of SSS in the North Atlantic is attributed to an increase in fresh water supply by an increase in discharges from the Mississippi and Amazon rivers and an increase in P-E over the North Atlantic ocean itself. The discharges increase in association with the wetter LGM climate south of the Laurentide ice sheet and in South America. The fresh water capping of the northern North Atlantic results in a marked reduction of deep convection and consequently a marked weakening of the North Atlantic overturning circulation. In the LGM, the maximum overturning stream function associated with the NADW formation decreases by about 60% relative to the control run, while in the Southern Ocean, oceanic convection is stronger in the LGM due to reduced stratification associated with an increase in SSS and a decrease in SST and the overturning stream function associated with the formation of AABW and the outflow increases substantially.

  • Purpose: Plastic surgeons are responsible for the management of spinal cord injury patients with upper and lower extremity reconstruction, pressure sore, and wounds. Derailment of autonomic nervous systems caused by injury to the spinal cord may result in fatal autonomic dysreflexia. Autonomic dysreflexia is a syndrome of massive imbalance of reflex sympathetic discharge occurring in patients with spinal cord lesion above the splanchnic outflow(T6). It is characterized by a sudden onset and severe increase in blood pressure and is potentially life threatening. The other classic symptoms are headache, chest pain, sweating, and bradycardia. In order to lower the blood pressure, it is important to remove the noxious stimulus for autonomic dysreflexia. If such symptoms last for more than 15 minutes despite conservative interventions, antihypertension drugs are recommended. Methods: In this case study, we report an autonomic dysreflexia case that developed in a 45 year-old tetraplegia patient with sacral pressure sore. When he got bladder irrigation, his blood pressure went up very high and his mentality became stuporous. He was sent to ICU for his blood pressure and mental care. ICU care made his vital sign stabilized and his mentality alert. Results: After the patient underwent proper treatment like inotropic agent, he was transferred to the general ward and his pressure sore on sacral area was coveraged with gluteus maximus myocutaneous advancement flap. Conclusion: If treatment is not effective, the patients have to undergo sudden, severe hypertension, which can cause stroke or death. To provide safe and effective care, plastic surgeons should be able to recognize and treat autonomic dysreflexia.

  • Surface water temperature of a bay (from the south to the north) increases in spring and summer, but decreases in autumn and winter. Due to shallow water depth, freshwater outflow, and weak current, the water temperature in the central to northern part of the bay is greatly affected by the land coast and air temperature, with large fluctuations. Water temperature variations are large in the north-east coast of the bay, but small in the south-west coast. The difference between water temperature and air temperature is greater in winter and in the south-central part of the bay than that in the north to the eastern coast of the bay where sea dykes are located. As the bay goes from south to north, the range of water temperature fluctuation and the phase show increases. When fresh water is released from the sea dike, the surrounding water temperature decreases and then rises, or rises and then falls. The first mode of empirical orthogonal function (EOF) represents seasonal variation of water temperature. The second mode represents the variability of water temperature gradient in east-west and north-south directions of the bay. In the first mode, the maximum and the minimum are shown in autumn and summer, respectively, consistent with seasonal distribution of surface water temperature variance. In the second mode, phases of the coast of Seosan~Boryeong and the east coast of Anmyeon Island are opposite to each other, bordering the center of the deep bay. Periodic fluctuation of the first mode time coefficient dominates in the one-day and half-day cycle. Its daily fluctuation pattern is similar to air temperature variation. Sea conditions and topographical characteristics excluding air temperature are factors contributing to the variation of the second mode time coefficient.

  • Sediment yield and sediment transport in a basin bring about decrease of conveyance by the change of bed section, and have an influence on an aggravation of water quality and freshwater ecosystem. This study is to analyze the characteristics of outflow sediment according to land-use in Mushim-cheon flowing through forest area, farmland area and urban area. The upper stream of Mushim-cheon consists of forest area and farmland area. The suspended sediment is observed through 10 rainfall events in 5 sites. As a result of analyzing characteristics of landuse, the site of Bangse-gyo takes up 69% of Mushim-cheon, and farmland area(27.1%) and forest area(63.7%) take up 90.8% in Bangse-gyo. Accordingly, these two areas have the high possibility to occur sediment. The suspended sediment of this site shows the highest concentration. Transferring to the downstream and the urban, the concentration of suspended sediment gets decreased. The suspended sediment occurred in the upper stream of Mushim-cheon prior to Bangse-gyo has an influence on the downstream, and has a slight influence on the urban area. Also relational formula about suspended sediemtn and discharge is leaded. As a result of this formula, $R^{2}$ is 0.506 in the upper stream and is 0.656 in the downstream.
