  • Knowledge of variations of veins of head and neck in relation to internal jugular, external jugular, anterior jugular and facial veins is important to surgeons doing head and neck surgery as well as to radiologists doing catheterization and to clinicians in general. In the current case, congenital atresia of the left internal jugular vein is reported. During neck dissection, superficial veins of neck and left external jugular vein was engorged and the left internal jugular vein was look like a fibrotic band. The left common carotid artery and vagus nerve was normal.

  • The meningiomas are slowly growing tumors arising from meningoepithelial cells and they generally occur in the intracranial space. Tumor extension to the extracranial structures occurred in about 20 percent of intracranial meningiomas. Meningiomas extending to the cervical area are uncommom. Beacuse these patients complain of localized symptoms, sometimes those tumors have been operated as cervical tumors. In this report, we incidentally found a meningioma in the left parapharyngeal space in a 63-year-old female, who was confirmed by histopathologic diagnosis to have meningioma. We report herewith this case with the review of literatures.

  • Primary squamous cell carcinoma of the thyroid gland is a very rare event, representing much less than 1% of all malignant tumors of the thyroid gland. The cancer is characterized by rapidly progressive clinical course in spite of its differentiated morphologic features. In most cases, a squamous epithelium is believed to be a result of metaplasia of a follicular epithelium, although in rare exceptions, it can originate from a remnant of the thyroglossal duct or ultimobranchial body. Squamous cell carcinoma of the thyroid gland can occur in a pure form or mixed with adenocarcinoma. Because their clinical behavior is more aggressive than that of other malignant neoplasm of thyroid gland, the tumor should be treated more vigorously at its initial stage. Recently, authors experienced one case of primary squamous cell carcinoma of the thyroid gland. We report our case with a brief review of literature.

  • Angiolymphoid hyperplasia with eosinophilia(ALHE) is an uncommon idiopathic condition that presents with isolatedor grouped cutaneous plaques or nodules of the head and neck. Extracutaneous involvement is rare. ALHE is a distinct pathologic entity marked by a proliferation of blood vessels with distinctive large endothelial cells accompanied by a characteristic inflammatory infiltrate that includes eosinophils. The lesion is benign but may be persistent and difficult to eradicate. The authors have recently experiecned a case of angiolymphoid hyperplasia with eosinophilia in a 52-year-old male who had a painless enlarging mass in his right preauricular area and external ear canal for several years. We present this case with the review of literatures.

  • Bronchogenic cysts are rare congenital anomalies of the tracheobronchial tree. Most cases present within the mediastinum or pulmonary parenchyma without a patent connection to the tracheobronchial tree or digestive tract in the pediatric age group. Cervical bronchogenic cysts in adults are rare. In this report, we describe two cases of incidentally found paratracheal bronchogenic cysts that presented as asymptomatic neck masses in a 66-year-old female with papillary thyroid carcinoma and in a 59-year-old male of Catleman's disease.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to survey the needs of oriental medical students about the existing teaching methods and to investigate satisfaction of student-oriented teaching & learning method on the oriental medical ophthalmology & otolaryngology class. Methods : 1. Oriental medical ophthalmology & otolaryngology were studied by student-oriented teaching method with 36 persons( 4th grade, school of Oriental medicine). 2. The satisfaction of school lesson was surveyed with questioning paper before & after applying student-oriented teaching & learning method. Results : 1. 88.9% students replied that the general teaching method is a lecture at school of oriental medicine. 2. They replied that Problem based learning(36.1%) & Team based learning(22.2%) are more effective teaching methods than lecture(19.4)%). 3. 66.6% students replied about the necessity of improvement of major subject's teaching method. Conclusions : 1. The interest & understanding degree were improved compare with other class by lecture. 2. It was positive about the interaction with professor and students(64.8%). 3. It was positive about the diagnosis and treatment of patients in the future(64.7%). 4. It was negative about the present national examination(67.6%). 5. Meditation was helpful at classwork(64.7%).

  • Objectives : The purpose of this paper is to report the effect of Korean medicine treatments on allergic contact dermatitis aggravated after applying steroid ointment. Methods : We treated a 63-year-old woman with allergic contact dermatitis on the both forearm, jaw, neck, chest with Korean medicine. Before Korean medicine treatments she has taken oral steroids and applied steroid ointment for several years to treat dermatitis, but long-tern steroid therapy aggravated her symptoms like skin pruritus, erythema, exudates or edema. After Korean medical treatment for 27 days, we found that the size of erythema was reduced, and symptoms like pruritus, exudates and edema were lost. We recorded pictures of changes on symptoms. Results & Conclusions : The symptoms of allergic contact dermatitis were improved. Erythema, edema, exudate were lost. Thus Korean medicine treatments are effective on allergic contact dermatitis and could be a great alternative to steroid treatment.

  • Myxoma is a benign mesenchymal neoplasm that can occur in the head and neck. Laryngeal myxoma is extremely rare and easily confused with a laryngeal polyp. The common clinical presentation is hoarseness, dysphonia, dyspnea and dysphagia depending on their size and location. Treatment for laryngeal myxoma is complete surgical excision with surrounding normal tissue. To our knowledge, 11 laryngeal myxomas have been reported in the English literature, and all patients except only 1 case were male. We report the second female case of myxoma on a vocal cord with a review of literature.

  • Esophageal diverticulum is a rare entity, the true incidence of which is unknown, mainly because there are usually no clinical symptoms. Most esophageal diverticulum are found incidentally during an endoscopic or radiologic examination. Their classification is based on anatomical location; namely, upper third(Zenker or pharyngoesophageal), middle third(thoracic), or lower third(epiphrenic). Here we report a 52-years-old female presenting with dysphagia and regurgitation. Esophagogram showed esophageal diveticulum at lower cervical esophagus. Its positional aspect, it is different from Zenker's diveticulum. Treatment is surgical via an endoscopic or external approach. In view of the patient's age and anatomical location, various surgical approaches were considered as a therapeutic option for the management. This paper presents our experience in the management of esophageal diverticulum which was unusual location and stapled open resection without sternotomy.
