  • Rotator cuff tear is a common reason for shoulder pain. Although the surgical technique of rotator cuff repair is developing, high retear rate requires additional supplementary methods. Among these supplementary methods, as a kind of biologic augmentation, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has been spotlighted and has recently been studied by many researchers. PRP, a concentrate of platelet extract obtained from whole blood, contains numerous growth factors. As this is known to play an important role in the tissue recovery process, it had been used for research in a variety of fields including orthopedics. Use of PRP has been attempted in surgical treatments of rotator cuff tear for better results; however, only a few large-scale research studies on the effect of PRP have been reported. Clinical results of each study are also variable. Therefore research using large-scale randomized, double-blind trials should be conducted in order to prove the application range, safety, and clinical effects of PRP.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of eccentric exercise of affected hip abductor muscles on Gait balance in patient with hemiplegia. 30 patients with hemiplegia were recruited among in and out patients of Gil Hospital(age x=50.5, SD=10.1, range 37-80. post stroke days x=383.2, SD=309.3, range 57-1165). These patients were divided into eccentric and control groups by random sampling. TUG were used for this study. Paired t- test was used to identify the effects of eccentric exercise of hip. The results were stastically significantly differences in the effect of exercise between experimental and control groups by TUG(p<0.05). The results indicate that the eccentric exercise of affected hip abductor muscles is effects on gait balance in patient with hemiplegia.

  • Background: The purpose of this clinical case report is to confirm sacroiliac joint misalignment effects on the gait. Methods: A healthy women volunteered to participate in this case report. Measurement of the subject was performed two categories. One is physical examination of the pelvic by inspection, palpation, movement based tests and pain provocation tests. The other one is gait performance measurement by 3 dimentional motion analysis. Results: Diagnosis by physical examination of the subject was Lt. ilium posterior rotation. Pelvic, hip, knee and ankle in the 3 dimensional kinematic data, the most notable result was the ankle. Conclusion: To confirm the effect of the misalignment of the sacroiliac joint on the gait function, it must be evaluated by integrating the movement to the ankle from the lumbar.

  • Background: Postoperative delirium is relatively common. However, the relationship between intravenous patient-controlled analgesia (IV-PCA) and delirium has not been thoroughly investigated. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of IV-PCA on the prognosis of postoperative delirium in patients undergoing orthopedic surgery. Methods: Medical records of 129 patients with postoperative delirium were reviewed. Patients were divided into two groups according to whether they used IV-PCA with fentanyl and ketorolac. The IV-PCA group consisted of 73 patients who were managed with IV-PCA; the NO-PCA group consisted of 56 patients who were managed without PCA. Results: Incidences of multiple psychiatric consultations and prolonged delirium were significantly lower in patients using IV-PCA with fentanyl and ketorolac than in those without PCA. Conclusions: We recommend the use of IV-PCA for pain control and management of delirium in patients with postoperative delirium.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of cervical pain and radiating pain after cervical traction for patients with cervical pain. This evaluation was made 81 persons who cervical pain or radiating pain. The result of this study were as following ; 1. There were statistically significant decrease in cervical pain and radiating pain after cervical traction. 2. A type group(only neck pain ; n=5) and B type group(neck to elbow radiating pain ; n=11), there were pain decreased but there were not significant difference (p>0.05), C type group(neck to shoulder radiating pain group ; n = 14) and D type group(neck to hand radiating pain group ; n = 50), there were pain decreased before test then after test by VAS and significant difference(p<0.05).

  • The purpose of this study was to exame the pain relief effects of myofascial pain syndrome patient by Post-Isometric Relaxation. From July, 1996 to January, 1997, PIR was applied to myofascial pain syndrome associated with musculoskelatal lesions and was examed on 17 muscles in 98 patients at Sun General Hospital, Taejon city. The results of this study were as follows ; 1. Immediate pain relief group was 58(59%). 2. Only tenderness relief group was 24(25%). 3. No effect group was 16(16%). These results could be confirmed that the increased tension of the affected muscles with the resulting pain relieved by restoring the full stretch length of the muscle by PIR.

  • Purpose : To compare the effect between isometric exercise group(n=10) and electrical stimulation therapy group(n=10) on improvement of biceps brachii muscle strength. Methods : The experiments were performed for 4 weeks and three times a week. The participants of this study were 20 students(10 male, 10 female) who had not any medical problems. We divided into the two groups. One group received isometric exercise and the other group received EST for 4 weeks. The biceps brachii muscle strength was evaluated by making use of the KIN-COM. Results : The results were as follows 1. One group which received isometric exercise increased 36% for biceps brachii muscle strength. 2.The other group which received EST increased 54% for biceps brachii muscle strength. Conclusion : The results of this study showed that EST group was more effective than isometric exercise group.

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to measure the change of strength of trunk flexion and extension on abdominal and back muscles. Methods : Each taping group 1(n=14), taping group 2(n=14), taping group 3(n=14) and control group(n=15) were measured a muscle strength by Biodex at first test, second test, third test and forth test in 3 days. Results : The strength of trunk flexion and extension was significantly different among the experimental groups (p<.05). It also shows that significant increasing of muscle strength at 48 hours after application of taping (p<.05). Conclusion : In conclusion, we were found that taping technique base on taping type show immediately assistance of muscle strength and enduring effect for 48 hours.

  • Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of a complex exercise program for elderly people who had experienced a fall on their balance ability and proprioception when their visual sense was blocked. Methods: The subjects were 24 elderly people with experienced fall. They were equally and randomly divided into a blind group and a general group. The subjects performed the complex exercise program for 30 minutes, twice a day, five days a week for 4 weeks a total of 20 times. Outcome measures were the 10-meter walking test (10MWT), Berg balance scale (BBS), Fukuda stepping test(FST), proprioception test (PT). Results: After the intervention, the blind group showed improvements in 10MWT, BBS, FST, PT. The general group showed improvements in 10MWT and PT. Conclusions: The complex exercise program for elderly people helped enhance their balance ability and proprioception.
