  • With the exponentially increasing Internet traffic and emergence of more versatile and heterogeneous applications, the design of datacenter networks (DCNs) is subject to unprecedented requirements for larger capacity and more flexible switching granularities. Envisioning Optical-Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (O-OFDM) as a promising candidate for such a scenario, we motivate the use of O-OFDM as the underlying switching technology in order to provide sufficient switching capacity and elastic bandwidth allocation. For this purpose, this article reviews the recent progresses of DCN deployment and assesses the scenario where the O-OFDM transmission and switching technology is employed in the underlying transport plane. We discuss the key issues of the datacenter-oriented O-OFDM optical networks, and in particular, elaborate on a number of open issues and solutions including system interconnection architecture, routing and resource assignment, survivability, and energy-efficiency.

  • This study deals with the adaptive multiuser OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) system which adjusts the resource allocation according to the environmental changes in such as wireless and quality of service required by users. The resource allocation includes subcarrier assignment to users, modulation method and power used for subcarriers. We first develop a general optimization model which maximizes data throughput while satisfying data rates required by users and total power constraints. Based on the property that this problem has the 0 duality gap, we apply the subgradient dual optimization method which obtains the solution of the dual problem by iteration of simple calculations. Extensive experiments with realistic data have shown that the subgradient dual method is applicable to the real world system, and can be used as a dynamic resource allocation mechanism.

  • This paper considers the use of the Partial Transmit Sequence (PTS) technique to reduce the Peak-to-Average Power Ratio (PAPR) of an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing signal in wireless communication systems. Search complexity is very high in the traditional PTS scheme because it involves an extensive random search over all combinations of allowed phase vectors, and it increases exponentially with the number of phase vectors. In this paper, a suboptimal metaheuristic algorithm for phase optimization based on an improved harmony search (IHS) is applied to explore the optimal combination of phase vectors that provides improved performance compared with existing evolutionary algorithms such as the harmony search algorithm and firefly algorithm. IHS enhances the accuracy and convergence rate of the conventional algorithms with very few parameters to adjust. Simulation results show that an improved harmony search-based PTS algorithm can achieve a significant reduction in PAPR using a simple network structure compared with conventional algorithms.

  • In this paper, we propose a block-based selective orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) decode-and-forward relaying scheme for 4G mobile communication systems. In the scheme, an OFDM symbol is divided into blocks and one relay is selected for each block. Theoretical outage performance and error performance are analyzed and evaluated. A unified outage expression is given for our scheme and the other two schemes and the lower bound of the bit error rate of the three schemes is also obtained. The effect of the coherence bandwidth on the proposed scheme is also investigated. Monte Carlo simulations are carried out to validate our analysis. The scheme can obtain a good tradeoff between complexity and performance and can be used in future 4G mobile communication systems.

  • Recently, orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) was applied to VLC systems owing to its high rate capability. On the other hand, a real-valued unipolar OFDM signal for VLC significantly reduces bandwidth efficiency. For practical implementation, channel estimation is required for data demodulation, which causes a further decrease in spectral efficiency. In addition, the large fluctuation of an OFDM signal results in poor illumination quality, such as chromaticity changes. This paper proposes a spectrally efficient method based on a hidden-pilot-aided precoding technology for VLC with less flickering than a conventional OFDM-based method. This approach can obtain channel information without any loss of bandwidth efficiency while ensuring illumination quality by reducing the flickering effect of an OFDM-based VLC. The simulation results show that the proposed method provides a 6.4% gain in bandwidth efficiency with a 4% reduction in flicker compared to a conventional OFDM-based method.

  • In outdoor visible light communication channels and LED road illumination communications for the intelligent transport systems (ITS), inter symbol interference (ISI) due to multipath propagation prevents high data rate transmission. Indoor wireless optical communication systems utilizing white LED lights and on the road illumination have been studying about it. Generally, plural lights are installed in room and considered to the traffic information system using existing LED traffic lights. Therefore, their optical path difference must be considered. In this paper, the influence of an optical path difference has been investigated and two approaches against this problem are introduced. One uses on-off keying, return-to-zero (OOK-RZ) coding and the other uses optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(OFDM).

  • For orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), the discrete Fourier transform (DFT)-based processing at the receiver has been perceived equivalent to the matched filter (MF)-based processing. In this paper, we revisit the equivalence and mathematically show that when the guard interval is insufficient, the well-known DFT-based processing inherently causes more intersymbol and interchannel interference (ISI/ICI) than the MF-based processing. Then, with the adverse increase of interference, analytical expressions for the link performance are derived in terms of bit error rate (BER). Numerical results from computer simulation and analysis are presented to justify our claims.

  • We have designed and implemented a receiver of Eureka-147 Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) scheme. DAB used OFDM (orthogonal frequency division multiplexing) as its transmission technique that is very sensitive to synchronization error. So reliable synchronization algorithms have been proposed and evaluated. With the algorithms we proposed a PC based real-time DAB receiver has been implemented. We find that the receiver performs satisfactorily to meet the specifications we determined.

  • In this paper, we present diversity coded orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DC-OFDM), an approach to maximize the probability of successful reception and increase the reliability of OFDM-based systems through diversity coding. We focus on the application of DC-OFDM to vehicular networks based on IEEE 802.11p technology and analyze the performance improvement using this new technology. It is shown that DC-OFDM significantly improves the performance of vehicular ad hoc networks in terms of throughput and the expected number of correctly received symbols.

  • There are a few core technologies to enable high-performance $4^{th}$ generation (4G) broadband wireless communication system. A multiple input multiple output (MIMO) provides high-rate transmission through expended channels by multiple array antennas in both sender and receiver side. Also orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is well-known as the most appropriate technique for high data rate transmission such as Mobile WiMAX and WLAN. Efficient decrease of inter-carrier interference (ISI) and inter-carrier interference (ICI) are the reasons for why OFDM is suitable for high-performance transmission, 4G mobile communication. In this paper, we mainly focus on two of objects, combination between MIMO and OFDM, and OFDM channel simulator using Ray-tracing algorithm. The results of this paper can be used implementation of a Wireless Software Platform for 4G Mobile Communication Systems.
