The purpose of the present study was to investigate the correlations of malocclusion between the mother and the offspring and thus heritable features from mother to her offspring. Dental impression was taken of the both jaws of 73 mothers and their sons and 109 mothers and their daughters, and the measurement was obtained from the models. The correlation coefficient of the mesio-distal diameters of teeth and that of occlusion and arch variable was calculated from the mesurement. After the data was analyzed and estimated, the following results were obtained : 1. It was evident that the tooth size of the offspring was influenced from their mother. 2. It was evident that the occlusion, the arch size and shape of the offspring were influenced from their mother. 3. There was not the marked difference between the heredity of occlusion variable and arch variable on the mother-offspring relationship. 4. The correlation of the lower intercanine width and the lower available space discrepancy between the mother and the offspring were greatly influenced with the environmental factor.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the treatment effects on anterior crossbite patients using chin cap and labiolingual arch appliance. In the present study, I statistically evaluated measurement values on a cephalogram before and after treatment form twenty anterior crossbite cases. The results were as follows: 1. In the craniofacial patterns, cranial base increased after treatment. 2. In the maxillo-mandibular relationship, ANB and Facial convexity significantly increased. 3. In the denture patterns, occlusal plane, Ul to FH and Overjet significantly increased. On the contrary overbite decreased significantly. Lower incisors inclined lingually. 4. In the soft tissue profile changes, lower lip protrusion was signifacantly improved.
Nitinol wires are now widely used in the orthodontic field because of their unique shape memory effect and superelasticity. But sometimes Nitinol wires are deformed in clinical use. Fatigue load is possible cause of Nitinol deformation. To determine the effect of fatigue load to the mechanical properties of Nitinol, various fatigue cycle$(1\times10^4,\;2\times10^4,\;3\times10^4,\;4\times10^4,\;5\times10^4,\;1\times10^5)$ were applied to $0.017\times0.025$ inch Nitinol. The results obtained were as follows ; 1. Applied load increased as fatigue cycle increased in three point bending test. 2. Maximum tensile strength and elongation decreased as fatigue cycle increased. 3. Tn SEM, brittle fracture pattern was increased when fatigue cycle increased.
This study was undertaken to establish the cephalometric standard of Hellman dental age IVA group of Korean. The subjects consisted of 40 males and 44 females with normal occlusion and aceptable profile. The results were obtained. 1) The tables of standard deviation from the measurements were made. 2) All linear measurement was greater in male than in female. 3) Female had more convex profile than male, 4) Facial convexity, upper and lower lip of esthetic line were gradually decreased with. age. 5) Upper incisor was gradually labioversioned with age.
In orthodontic field, the study on gnathostatic model is very important to the diagnosis and analysis of malocclusion. The purpose of this study is to observe that relation of orbital plane and upper canine in Koreans. We selected 230 cases with normal occlusion, 124 male and 106 female cases aged from 12 years to 25 years, to prepare 230 gnathostatic models, and measured the distance from midpoint of mesio-distal distance of upper canine to orbital plane in gnathostatic model. The results obtained were as follows: 1) The mean value of the distance from upper canine to orbital plane showed no significant change with age. 2) The mean value of the distance from the upper canine to orbital plane was -3.11mm in male and -3.84mm in female. 3) The orbital plane passed through the upper canine in normal occlusion of Koreans.
Accurate analysis of facial asymmetry prior to any orthognathic or orthodontic treatment plan is essential in ensuring good treatment result. Dental CBCT (Cone-beam Computed Tomography) provides as actual three-dimensional measurements of distance and angle without any radiographic magnification as medical CT provides, while its field of view is limited to the oral and maxillofacial area. CBCT is a useful tool for the diagnosis of facial asymmetry. The coordinates of facial landmarks are obtained from the 3D reconstruction software which enables the establishment of perpendicular planes and the identification of the landmarks. Then, the bilateral discrepancies of the landmarks are obtained as spherical polar coordinates which can show the amount of asymmetry and its direction. A method of 3D analysis of facial asymmetry using CBCT is introduced in this report.

Maxillomandibular fractures usually require intermaxillary fixation as a means to immobilize and stabilize the fracture and to re-establish proper occlusion. Arch bars or intermaxillary fixation screws cannot be used for edentulous patients or for patients who have poor dental health. Here, we present a case of repeated intermaxillary fixation failure in a patient weak alveolar rigidity secondary to multiple dental implants. Because single-point fixation screws were not strong enough to maintain proper occlusion, we have used Y-shaped plates to provide more rigid anchoring points for the intermaxillary wires. We suggest that this method should be considered for patients in whom conventional fixation methods are inappropriate or have failed.
This is a report of one case about facial asymmetry involving maxilla & mandible.
Le Fort I Maxillary Osteotomy & BSSRO is usually used for facial asymmetry patient involving maxilla & mandible. But Le Fort I Maxillary Osteotomy has demerits about more aggressive technique, more operation times, more discomforts of post operation nasal breathing than Unilateral maxillary Segmental Osteotomy.
So we treated one patient successfully using Unilateral Maxillary Segmental Osteotomy, BSSRO & Post - Operation Rapid Orthodontics instead of Le Fort I Maxillary Osteotomy.
Adjunctive orthodontic therapy may be required to create appropriate space, to address misalignment and tooth size discrepancy for better function and esthetics. The desired interproximal alveolar contour and gingival embrasure form can be developed during treatment. Various applications of temporary anchorage devices for pre-prosthetic tooth movement allowed clinicians to achieve high efficiency, shorter treatment time, and less discomfort of patient. Biomechanical considerations for the periodontal status of the affected teeth are required to successfully control the vertical and horizontal space. Hence, the interdisciplinary approaches have an essential role in maximizing the favorable treatment outcome. In particular, pivotal Clinical decisions such as whether to open or close the space should be made by consensus of the involved dentists. This article presents the orthodontic treatment approaches for prosthodontic works including mesiodistal and vertical space regaining specially for cases of unrestored teeth over an extended period of time.
Computer-aided surgery is popular and useful in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery, because of the possibility of simulation with a high accuracy. In all aspects of surgery, proper planning facilitates more predictable operative results, however before the use of virtual planning, much of this relied on 2-dimensional (2-D) imaging for treatment planning on a 3-dimensional (3-D) object and surgical trial and error. With real-time instrument positioning and clear anatomic identification, a computer-assisted navigation system (CANS) is exceptionally helpful in maxillofacial surgery. These techniques enable performing precise bony ablation and reconstruction, and also decrease surgical time and donor site defect.
