  • Velvet antlers from Cervus elaphus species are one of most famous, expensive and commonly used medicinal materials in traditional oriental medicine. Some distributor had illegal practice of disguising the origin of antlers in Korea market. Therefore, a test to distinguish antler essential to ensure the healthy development of the herbal industry. In this study, the variation in DNA sequences of the mitochondrial ATPase8 and cytochrome-coxidaseI (COI) genes of Cervus elaphus from China, the Republic of Altai, and Canada were evaluated. In addition, the sequence variation among, Rein deer and Cervus elaphus species was also evaluated. Although the sequences of deer from the Republic of Altai and Canada were very similar, polymorphisms that were conserved in each species were observed in the ATPase8 and COI genes. Therefore, these polymorphic markers could be used to distinguish Cervus elaphus antlers from different locations.

  • This study was peformed to provide basic ideas as understanding and application for oriental medicinal cuisine (Yak-Sun). We investigated background, history of Yak-Sun in China. Also we conducted to investigated how to apply the theories of oriental medicine appropriately, which direction should be taken, and how it should be developed. To develop medicinal cuisine, it is necessary to grasp the theoretical system. And to develop medicinal cuisine for health enhancement, it is also required not only to consider constitutions but also to suggest the need of knowledge for moderation in terms of regimen along with the theory of oriental medicine. Also to develop medicinal cuisine according to the perspective of oriental medicinal theory, what should be taken into account is not only the understanding of the characteristics of food materials, but also the properties of them that the theory of oriental medicine. Lastly the scientific effect of the medicinal cuisine which is developed according to the oriental medicinal theory. And it is believed to be essential for the government to make effects to set a standard and laws to validate the medicinal effects and the process of assessment so that the systematic development can be encouraged, and to prepare guidance to food development for national health improvement.

  • To develop optimal storage method of root of Peucedani Radix, which has been grown as major cultural herbal medicine material, root of Peucedani Radix was stored for 10 months with different packing materials and sealing methods. The loss in dry weight as influenced by packing materials and sealing methods was the lowest at vacuum packing and followed by complete sealing methods with transparent polyethylene film. The ratio of root rot during the storage period was not significantly different between packing materials but was significantly different between sealing conditions. Conclusively vacuum packing and complete sealing with polyethylene film appears to be optimal for storage of Peucedani Radix.

  • Objectives : This study aims to propose a processing method for dosage units of medicinal materials and the database schema to manage formula data in Korean medicine ontology. Methods : All dosage units of medicinal materials are collected from the seven textbooks that contain formula data of Korea medicine ontology. Dosages are converted to Arabic numerals and units that are frequently used are converted to representative units. Database schema is designed for processing and managing the formulas and medicinal materials with dosage units. Results : Seven representative units are selected out of 77 units. They will be used in the addition or subtraction of medicinal materials in a formula support system. The remaining units will be made available for references. Conclusions : EMR or chart programs used in clinical hospitals contain formula data that is already standardized. However, the formula data in Korean medicine literature and textbook is not refined, so it is necessary to process the dosages and units of medicinal materials to use in the formula support system. This result is a processing method to utilize the formula data of Korean medicine textbooks and it will be implemented this method in the established formula support system in the future.

  • Objective : Angelica species are some of the most medicinally important materials in Oriental medicine. This study was performed to determine if Angelica species could be identified by genetic analysis and to verify Pyrosequencing analyses, which were used to assess genetic variation. Methods : The DNAs of Angelica acutiloba, Angelica gigas and Angelica sinensis were extracted. We have investigated the typing of single-base variations of Angelica species in DNA by using Pyrosequencing. Results : Angelica gigas showed a different pattern compared with Angelica acutiloba and Angelica sinensis. The peak of Angelica gigas was very weak in the second C nucleotide base compared with that of the others. The peak of Angelica acutiloba was present in the fourth C nucleotide base compared with that of the others. From these results we verified that our Angelica species-specific sequencing primer was well designed. Conclusion : Pyrosequencing analysis might be able to provide the identification of the Angelica species.

  • The objective of this research was to determine controlling effects on rice blast (Pyricularia oryzae) in rice plants by using plant extracts from different extraction methods (water, boiling water, fermentation, and ethanol) from 38 agricultural materials of traditional agriculture. Rice blast was completely suppressed by 3% ethanol extracts in Rheum palmatum roots, and suppressed 97% and 77% by 10% ethanol extracts in onion bulb and pine tree leaves, respectively in a laboratory test. However, other agricultural materials showed low effect on suppression of rice blast. Additionally, in a seedling test, rice injury of two cultivars (Ilmibyeo and Hopyoungbyeo) against rice blast was reduced 40-71%, 29-63%, and 23-63% by 5 and 10% ethanol extracts in Rheum palmatum roots, onion bulb, and pine tree leaves, respectively, compared with non-treated controls. Rice injury of two cultivars (Ilmibyeo and Hopyoungbyeo) against rice blast was reduced by 21-55%, 23-46%, and 5-39% in response to Rheum palmatum roots, onion bulb, and pine tree leaf applications at 100, 200 and $400g/m^2$ at 0 day after seeding, respectively, compared with non-treated controls. Rice plants did not show any leaf injuries and growth reduction after treatments of the Rheum palmatum roots, onion bulb, and pine tree leaf extracts or soil application. Thus, the above materials may be used for controlling rice blast in organically produced rice fields.

  • The Sasang constitution food is classified by Sadang theory(四黨論), Aroma-Scent-Fluid-Taste(馨臭液味), Inhale-Exhale-Incomings-Outgoings(呼吸出納), Ascent-Descent-Open-Close(升降開闔), Healthy Energy(保命之主), which is different from the Oriental medicine herb classification of traditional oriental medicine. So, we obtained the result of the characteristic of radish, one of much used food materials by examining ancient documents as follows. First, today 'Rae(來)' is used as to come' but in ancient days, was used as 'wheat'. Radish(萊服) is the word made by meaning which removes and overcomes the poison of wheat Second, Ancient people realized the power of its Inhale Disperse Qi (呼散之氣) when the root of radish raises quickly from the soil, and recognized that radish has such a good dissolving function when seeing Bean-curd becomes soft if radish is added to Bean-curd dish. That’s why they classified that radish is lung medicine, and used it as Taeumin type medicine. So if someone is suffocated by the smoke and has indigestion, chronic asthmatic coughing, now we use radish by applying the Inhale Disperse Qi of radish.
