  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the possibility of applying the planning characteristics of Neowa houses to contemporary residential structures. Contrary to the popular assumption that traditional Korean houses have decentralized plans, local building traditions observed in Neowa houses show that the diversity among hanoks allows the incorporation of traditional spatial organization into the contemporary residences. By analyzing the spatial organization of Neowa houses, three advantageous planning characteristics were found. First, the presence of indoor wooden floors (maru or daechung) as well as outdoor wooden floors in Neowa houses is practical for Korea's weather marked by humid summers and icy winters. Secondly, the internal orientation of space in Neowa houses is more appropriate in the contemporary context of a highly urbanized society emphasizing family privacy. Thirdly, the flexibility and interchangeability of interior elements can be applied to improve efficiency. By applying the aforementioned characteristics, this study suggests ways to adopt traditional features to improve contemporary residences.

  • The Self-Organization Feature Map as an unsupervised network is very widely used these days in engineering science. The applied network in this paper is the Self Organization Feature Map with constant weights which includes Kohonen Network. In this research, Reinforced Concrete Shear Wall buildings with different stories and heights are analyzed and a database consisting of measured fundamental periods and characteristics of 78 RC SW buildings is created. The input parameters of these buildings include number of stories, height, length, width, whereas the output parameter is the fundamental period. In addition, using Genetic Algorithm, the structure of the Self-Organization Feature Map algorithm is optimized with respect to the numbers of layers, numbers of nodes in hidden layers, type of transfer function and learning. Evaluation of the SOFM model was performed by comparing the obtained values to the measured values and values calculated by expressions given in building codes. Results show that the Self-Organization Feature Map, which is optimized by using Genetic Algorithm, has a higher capacity, flexibility and accuracy in predicting the fundamental period.

  • As incipient organizations progress from formation to become larger entities, the procedures and rules that provided managerial and structural advantages in having established the organizations and promoting the growth impede the innovation and creativity vital to maintain the competitive advantage. Adopting Corporate Entrepreneurship (CE), large corporations have tried to overcome the dilemma and to sustain the innovation and creativity in order to effectively cope with harsh competitive realities. Recently, some advanced corporations are trying to enhance CE by setting up an internal venture program as a seed organization for CE. By making an in-depth analysis of the internal venture program, 'C-Lab' of Samsung that is promoting CE-related characteristics for enhancing CE, we attempt to shed light on (1) what kinds of environments should be built around the seed organization for CE (2) what are the major characteristics that should be promoted through the seed organization in relation to CE (3) What kinds of achievements can be made from the promoted characteristics (4) How the characteristics are spread over the entire organization. Based on the analysis, we suggest a generalized process in which CE can be enhanced. Since different approaches should be taken for managing the seed organization and spreading the characteristics depending on the strengths and weaknesses of a corporation, there must be the step, 'evaluation of corporate internal capabilities' in the process. We believe that each corporation can enhance CE by taking advantage of the process with reference to the C-Lab case study.

  • This study intends to analyze the various spatial structures and characteristics of the museum based on the two of the Renzo Piano's recent projects Menil Collection '||'&'||' Museum and Beyeler Foundation Museum Which defined the direction of the "Third Generation" in museum architecture with reference to the quality of spatial experience and design applications. Comparison and analysis were done on the basic spatial organization floor layout accessibility exhibition area lighting plan and circulation between the two museum. Through the itemized common characteristics of the museum the architect's proposal on meaning and direction of the new museum architecture can be viewed. The contemporary museums distinguish themselves quite clearly from their predecessors and this applies both to their own form and to their spatial organization. As the public demands and requests toward the museum building facility expand everyday the architect must respond by providing multiple types of space where people can experience different atmosphere in each area. One concept he used to create multi experienced area was manipulation of the natural light using by the state-of-the-art techniques of the light filtering system and multi-layering roof system to protect the valuable collections against the direct sunlight. But mainly it was to prove his strong belief in "architecture of light" by creating space with minimized meaning by purposely distinguished area in order to provide maximum support to the physical value of the collection " The connection with nature" is another concept which Piano used to provide the public a tranquil experience through out the architecture which engages in a lively dialogue with art. In spatial organization Piano concerned on functionality which not only concentrated on the visitor's point of view but also on the museum staff's comfort. Unlkie the traditional museum he alternates various size of exhibition areas for spatial hierarchy. Specially the spatial flexibility that the temporary exhibition areas are able to be expanded to the permanent exhibition areas by adjoining t재 spaces differentiate Piano's new museum from the rest. museum from the rest.
