  • Purpose - The market orientation of a manufacturer is a very critical competitive advantage factor in the development of new markets and the sustainability and maintenance of existing ones, achieved through the design of customer-oriented products. This is recognized as a virtuous circle, in which firms grow by means of promoting quality management. However, though market-oriented activities are important in management and operations, they seem to be promoted mainly by large-scale enterprises rather than by small- and medium-scale firms, the latter having invested relatively few company resources. Furthermore, few studies and analyses have examined how market orientation relates to the expansion of quality programs within organizations or with business performance; the market orientation and customer-orientation concepts are mixed together when both are used in research. Given the current market situation in which the servitization of manufacturing firms is rapidly expanding, this study's analysis of the effect on market orientation of manufacturers is a significant contribution. From this perspective, this study has several objectives. First, is to analyze and suggest the relationship between market orientation and quality management activity for manufacturers, focusing on three sub-activities: products, process, and quality management activities. Second, it is intended to identify correlation between manufacturers' market oriented activity and their management performance and then to analyze how market orientation affects business performance. The results of a number of prior studies on the correlation between market orientation and management performance have indicated that market orientation does affect management performance. Third, this study also investigates whether any differences in the relationship among market orientation, quality management activity and business performance occur according to company size. The results are used to present operational suggestions for large- and small- and medium-size firms. Research design, data, methodology - This study seeks to analyze and identify the causal features of the organic relationship among market orientation, quality management, and management performance for Korean manufacturing companies using three years (2005-2007) of market orientation, quality management, and business performance data. Subsequently, structural equation modeling was used to analyze the causal features of related factors and it aims to identify the features of market orientation, quality management, and business performance. Results - The analysis examined how market orientation affected the quality management and management performance of 159 smalland medium-size companies. In particular, enterprise quality management was analyzed in relation to management performance with a focus on activities such as leadership, measurement and improvement, quality control, cost management, and process management. Conclusions - The result of the analysis show that market orientation significantly affected all of the quality management activities and that market orientation in turn significantly affected organizational performance. The result of analysis indicate that quality management activities have a significant effect on quality control and cost management.

  • Cultural conditions for the production of extracellar $\beta$-galactosidase by Loctobacillus sporogenes, a spore forming lactic acid bacterium, were investigated with shaken flask and jar fermenter cultures. The fermentation medium giving maximum $\beta$-galactosidase yield was found to consist of 1 % lactose as a carbon source, 1.5% peptone as an organic nitrogen source. 0.2% ammonium sulfate as an inorganic nitrogen source, 0.8% ammonium phosphate dibasic as a phosphorus source, and 0.05% potassium chloride and 0.001% ferric chloride as mineral source. Optimal initial pH of the medium was 7.0 and the highest enzyme excretion was observed after 40 hours of cultivation at 37$^{\circ}C$. In this experiment, the 500$m\ell$ conical flask containing 50-200$m\ell$ of medium was shaken at 140 strokes per minute with 7cm amplitude in a reciprocating shaker. The maximum enzyme value attained was 38 U/$m\ell$ of the culture broth which was found to be slightly higher than the highest intermolecular enzyme activity (30 U/$m\ell$) observed after 24 hours of incubation. In the fermentor culture, the fermentation profile was shown to be similar to that observed in the shaken flask experiment. But the maximum extracellular enzyme activity was 45 U/$m\ell$ to be even higher than the value obtained with the shaken flask culture.

  • Some factors affecting mycelial growth of Pleurotus sajor-caju and P. ostreatus. were investigated. The optimal temperature and pH of the medium for mycelial growth of both the species were $25^{\circ}C$ to $30^{\circ}C$, and 5 to 6, respectively. The effect of carbon and nitrogen sources on mycelial growth of the species was studied using modified Waksman's special medium as the basal medium. Generally, the disaccharides and polysaccharides showed good effect for mycelial growth of P. sajor-caju, and the polysaccharides were superior to the other classes of carbon sources for mycelial growth of P. ostreatus. Generally the organic nitrogen compounds showed good mycelial growth of both the species. The mycelial growth of the species were favored by the ammonium nitrogen more than by the nitrate nitrogen source. Asparagine was superior to the other kinds of amino acid. Six percentage of glucose and 0.6% ammonium tartarate was optimum for mycelial growth of P. sajor-caju whereas the optimum concentration for the P. ostreatut was 4% glucose and 0.4% ammonium tatarate.

  • In the fermentation for preparation of petroprotein by Rhodotorula sp. in $C_{12}{\sim}C_{14}$n-alkane mixture it was investigated how the effects due to the difference of chemical form of the nitrogen sources are, that is, how the inorganic nitrogen sources such as nitrates and ammonium salts and organic nitrogen source such as urea effect on the view of fermentation time and yield and how the ratios of nitrogen to carbon with $NaNo_3$ effect. Then following results were obtained: the time required to maximum growth, when $NaNo_3$ or $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ was used as nitrogen source, was 40 hrs. and 45 hrs., respectively, but when urea was used, it was 66 hrs. much longer than above nitrogen sources. On the view of yield, however, in use of the both inorganic sources, when the yield is represented as consumption of 0.1 N-NaOH, it was 0.36 and 0.38 ml, respectively, but, in the case of urea, it amounted to 0.78 ml. In the effect of the ratios of nitrogen to carbon in medium, when n-alkane mixture was added in 1 % (vol.) and N/C with $NaNo_3$ was 0.2 the best results were obtained and generally the higher the value of the ratio the better growth effects were shown.

  • Burkholderia contaminans PSB-A and Burkholderia ambifaria PSB-B were isolated from button mushroom bed to estimate their phosphate solubility. The phosphate-solubilizing abilities of these strains were assessed by measuring the phosphorus content in a single and co-inoculation medium for 7 days. The co-inoculation of these two strains released the highest content of soluble phosphorus (166.3 ㎍ mL-1) into the medium, followed by single inoculation of B. contaminans PSB-A (143.73 ㎍ mL-1) and B. ambifaria PSB-B (127.1 ㎍ mL-1). The highest pH reduction, organic acid production, and glucose consumption were also observed in the co-inoculation medium. According to the plant growth promotion bioassay, co-inoculation enhanced the growth of romaine lettuce much more than the single inoculation (20.4% for leaf widths and 16.6% for root lengths). Although no significant difference was noted between single and co-inoculation of bacterial strains in terms of phosphorous release and plant growth, co-inoculation of PSB may have a beneficial effect on crop growth due to a synergistic effect between the strains.

  • The optimum conditions for glucoamylase production, and ethanol productivity of the transformant TSD-14 were investigated as compared with the parental strains. The properties of TSD-14 were comparatively similar to the donor S. diastaticus IFO 1046 as regards the conditions of glucoamylase production and ethanol productivity. The soluble starch was the most effective carbon source for the glucoamylase production. While inorganic nitrogen sources did not prompt cell growth and enzyme production, the organic nitrogen sources generally enhanced both cell growth and glucoamylase production. The metal salts such as FeSO$_4$, MgSO$_4$, MnCl$_2$, and NiSO$_4$were favorable to the enzyme production. And the optium temperature and initial pH for glucoamylase production were 3$0^{\circ}C$ and 5. The transformant TSD-14 produced 8.3%(v/v) ethanol from 15% sucrose medium, 4.8%(v/v) ethanol from 15% soluble starch medium, and 7.5%(v/v) ethanol from 15% liquefied potato starch medium. The corresponding fermentation efficiency were 84% , 45% and 70%, respectively.

  • A dynamic biofilter model was suggested to integrate the effect of biofilter-medium adsorption capacity on the removal efficiency of volatile organic compound (VOC) contained in waste air. In particular, the suggested biofilter model is composed of four components such as biofilm, gas phase, sorption volume and adsorption phase and is capable of predicting the unsteady behavior of biofilter-operation. The process-lumping model previously suggested was limited in the application for the treatment of waste air since it was derived under the assumption that the adsorbed amount of VOC equilibrated with biofilter-media would be proportional to the concentration of dissolved VOC in the sorption volume of biofilter-media. Therefore a Freundlich adsorption isotherm was integrated into a robust biofilter process-lumping model applicable to a wide range of VOC concentration. The values of model parameters related to biofilter-medium adsorption were obtained from the dynamic adsorption column experiments in the preceding article and literature survey. Furthermore a separate biofilter experiment was conducted to treat waste air containing ethanol and the experimental result was compared with the model predictions with various values of Thiele modulus (${\phi}$). The obtained value of Thiele modulus (${\phi}$) was close to 0.03.

  • Aspergillus sp. 101 was isolated from the Korean traditional soybean paste for the production of a salt-tolerant protease. The optimal condition for the production of a salt-tolerant protease was determined with various energy sources such as carbon, nitrogen, and protein, and at different culture conditions such as temperature, pH, incubation time and NaCl concentration. The most favorable organic nitrogen sources were 2% defatted soybean flour (DSF) and soy protein isolate (SPI). Optimal pH and temperature were pH 6.0 and $25{\sim}27^{\circ}C$, respectively. Therefore, Aspergillus sp. 101 protease was a mild acid (or neutral) protease. Protease production was the highest at 0.1% concentration of $CaCO_3,\;K_2HPO_4$ and Arabicgum. Aspergillus sp. 101 could grow in culture medium at 15% NaCl concentration and produce a salt-tolerant protease even at 7% NaCl. The cell mass and protease activity of Aspergillus sp. 101 cultured in a modified medium was comparatively higher in Czapek dox and protease producing media. Hence, Aspergillus sp. 101 protease can be utilized in soy or fish sauce industry as a salt-tolerant protease starter.

  • Protoplasts were isolated from cotyledons of germinating Pinus densiflora S. et Z. seeds. The seeds were germinated for nine days, and excised embryonic cotyledons about 3-4mm long were incubated with Cellulase Onozuka R-10 and Macerozyme. After 8 hours of incubation, large number of viable protoplasts were isolated. Isolated protoplasts were cultured in a medium containing basal salts of $B_5$ medium, vitamines, amino acids, organic acid, sugars, and growth hormones. The first evidence of protoplast budding was observed after twelve hours in culture, and it suggested that high potential of the embryonic cotyledons for rapid cell division affected the early budding, rather than effect of culture medium was shown in twelve hours. The three- to four-cell stage was reached after three to four days of culture. Most cell divisions were achieved by additional buddings rather than equal binary cell division. No further cell division was observed beyond the four-cell stage. Protoplasts isolated from fully expanded cotyledons (germinated for 17 to 24 days) seldom initiated or failed to initiate cell division.

  • Novel 2-hexylthieno[3,2-b]thiophene-containing conjugated molecules have been synthesized via a reduction reaction using tin chloride in an acidic medium. They exhibited good solubility in common organic solvents and good self-film and crystal-forming properties. The single-crystalline objects were fabricated by a solvent slow diffusion process and then were employed for fabricating field-effect transistors (FETs) along with thinfilm transistors (TFTs). TFTs made of 5 and 6 exhibited carrier mobility as high as 0.10-0.15 $cm^2V^{-1}s^{-1}$. The single-crystal-based FET made of 6 showed 0.70 $cm^2V^{-1}s^{-1}$ which was relatively higher than that of the 5-based FET (${\mu}=0.23cm^2V^{-1}s^{-1}$). In addition, we fabricated organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells with new 2-hexylthieno [3,2-b]thiophene-containing conjugated molecules and methanofullerene [6,6]-phenyl C61-butyric acid methyl ester ($PC_{61}BM$) without thermal annealing. The ternary system for a bulk heterojunction (BHJ) OPV cell was elaborated using $PC_{61}BM$ and two p-type conjugated molecules such as 5 and 7 for modulating the molecular energy levels. As a result, the OPV cell containing 5, 7, and $PC_{61}BM$ had improved results with an open-circuit voltage of 0.90 V, a short-circuit current density of 2.83 $mA/cm^2$, and a fill factor of 0.31, offering an overall power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 0.78%, which was larger than those of the devices made of only molecule 5 (${\eta}$~0.67%) or 7 (${\eta}$~0.46%) with $PC_{61}BM$ under identical weight compositions.
