Organic fanning in the UK has been greatly grown for the last decade. Two policies for supporting organic farming introduced in 1994 and 1999 played a crucial role in expanding organic farming area and increase in the number of farmers taken up organic fanning methods. Comparing the two policies, this paper identifies that the significant increase in financial aid to organic fanning in 1999 not only was a key factor to succeed in the scheme but also provided environmental base for further development of rural areas. However, such a national aid scheme should be improved in order to reflect regional specific characteristics in terms of environmental protection and local social and economic development. the experience of the UK suggests that the role of organic fanning in rural economics should be defined before enhancing financial support to farmers.
Late blight of potato caused by Phtophthora infestans is one of the most destructive disease in organic farming as well as in the conventional cultivation in Korea. Incidence and progress of the disease largely depend on climatic conditions around the fields. However, the disease completely destroys whole leaves of the plant within two weeks in organic farming fields. While, potato leaves in conventional farming fields remain healthy for 5 weeks after the first symptom appearance, because fungicides were applied four times in average to control the disease. Area under disease progress curve (AUDPC) of organic farming fields ranged from 2314 to 2421 and quickly expanded compare to that of conventional farming fields. The tuber yield in the organic farming fields ranged from 0.96 ton per 10a to 1.5 ton per 10a, while it was 2.7 ton per 10a in conventional farming fields. Tuber yields were reduced to $42\~63\%$ by the infection of late blight and the reduction rate was closely related with the time of first occurrence of the disease in organic farming fields. Physiological races of the pathogen were diversified with R0,1,3,4,5,7,10,11 in organic farming fields at Hongchun area. Pathogen races were distributed with similar pattern at different areas of organic farming fields.
This study aims to provide quite recent information on the organic agriculture in developed countries such as German, UK, Switzerland and USA and on the current activities of international research institutions of organic agriculture. The establishment and activity of ENOF in EU and ARNOA in Asia, IIRNOA in IFOAM was introduced shortly. I stitute of Organic Agriculture in FAL/Germany and FiBL in Switzerland. OMRI in USA, HDRA in UK and Schweisfurth Foundation in Germany were described. Also the educations in European universities for organic agriculture and the research activities and technical education system for organic farming were described. All of these informations could be useful for the further development of the strategy for Korean organic agriculture in education and research.
The paper outlines farming systems, including organic, in the UK, and provides a context for the use of biological nitrogen (N) from legumes, especially clovers, and manure in organic grassland systems. As N is dynamic within organic ruminant/grassland systems its pathway is described, including its loss and resultant environmental impact. Improvements in the predictability of response to biological N, its role in reducing the carbon footprint of ruminant products and potential to improve its efficiency are discussed.
This study aims at analysing the process of introduction and the development of the agri-environment policy of the UK and identifying the implication for the Korean government. The UK introduced the AES policy in order to reduce the negative impact of the farming practice on biodiversity and habitats. The initial process was only possible for the enormous research results on the relationship between the farming and environment. Since the UK launched the ESA scheme in 1987, it has extended the designated areas for four stages. Based on the success of the ESA scheme, it started CSS and other schemes. However, these had a modest success and were integrated into the CSS scheme, which from then on became the main measures of the AES in the UK. The whole process of the UK case tells us that the most important work for the start of the AES in Korea would be the necessity and feasibility of the environment protection measures in Korea which could be identified from academic and scientific research on the impact of agricultural practice on the rural environment in Korea.
To evaluate the historical changes and future counterplan of food culture in Korea . the following were surveyed : the scale of foodseivice industry. the consumer attitude on functional health food. the fancy and using frequency of fastfood in the growing generation, the actual state on use of imported food. consumer opinions in selecting factor of functional and organic foods. the actual state and consumer attitude on the imported foods, long-term prospect of food service industry in futures. the production of food rubbishes and their reusing rates. the production scales and toxicity problems of agricultural medicines including the postharvest agricultural medicine. the consumer anxiety such as potential environmental and human health risks associated with GMOs (genetically modified organisms) and the import state of GMOs, long-term prospect of population increase in world, and aged population of over 65 years and their social index in Korea, self-supporting rate and national security of food in Korea. the prospect for demand and supply of grains in Korea and world. decrease of the farming population and the decrease problem of agricultural productivity. the problem on the introduction of direct payment system for a farmhouse, and other social problem etc. In cases of 1996, self-supporting rate of food in Korea was the lowest as $26.4{\%}$ in the world but those countries such as USA, UK France, Canada and Denmark were $134.0{\%}\;122.0{\%}$. $190.0{\%}$. $179.0{\%}\;and\;134.0{\%}$, respectively. in 1997 Therefore. our food security appeared as a very serious problem in a viewpoint of the national security That's why this very important Symposium will be held by agriculture-related three Societies to see the last year of 1999 out and the new millennium in.
With recent interest organic farming the use of legumes including vetch and clover to provide N to adjacent crops is increasing in Korea. In the present studies, we conducted a trial to investigate the effects of the application of N rate on nitrogen fixation and transfer from vetch to barley in mixed stands. The experiment was arranged in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Four different N rates(0, 75, 113 and 150/ha) was used and vetch+barley was broadcasted manually on 1.5 $\times$2 m plot in Oct. 2001. Half of urea and K$_{2}O, 200 Phosphate and 75 kg potash per ha were applied as basal dressing md half of N md 75 potash were used for topdressing to soil surface on MarctL 2002. The equivalent of 1kg ha$^{-1}$ at($^{15}$NH$_{4}$)$_{2}$SO$_{4}$ solution at 99.8 atom $\%$$^{15}$N excess was applied to the microplot in mid April. Forage was harvested from each plot at ground level and separated into barley and vetch. Total N content and It values of samples were determined using a continuous flow stable isotope ratio mass spectrometry(IsoPrime-EA. Micromass, UK.). The percentage of legume H fixed from atmospheric N2 were 95.0, 93.8, 94.4 and $84.8\%$ with increment of N levels. The percentage of N transfer from vetch to barley by N-difference method with increment of N fertilizer were from 58 to$49\%$ while 39 to $23\%$ in $^{15}$N-dilution method. The amount of transfer from vetch to barley were 87 to 68 kg/ ha with N level by N-difference moth여 and 58 to -56/ha with N application levels by $^{15}$N dilution method. The amount of nitrogen fixation per ha were from 150 kg / ha to 219 kg / ha by different method, but on the other side 49 to 105kg/ha by N$^{15}$-dilution.
