Purpose: This study aims to examine correlation between temporomandibular disorder and oral habits that have been known to cause temporomandibular disorder with both male and female undergraduates. Methods: To figure out correlation between temporomandibular disorder and oral habits, a survey was conducted to 500 students of two universities located in Daegu Metropolitan City and Gyeongsangbuk-do, and excluding the ones unreliably answered or indicating errors, total 427 (85.4%) out of 500 questionnaire sheets were used for final analysis. Results: Female students showed higher prevalence rates than male students in temporomandibular joint pain and temporomandibular joint clicking, and students having the lip biting habit, tongue thrust habit, or bruxism habit indicated a higher prevalence rate of temporomandibular joint pain than normal students. Also, students having the tongue thrust habit indicated a significantly higher prevalence rate of temporomandibular joint clicking than normal students not having it. And about trismus, students having the bruxism habit showed a significantly higher prevalence rate than normal students not having it. Conclusion: The findings imply that oral habits like lip biting, tongue thrust, or bruxism are closely related with temporomandibular joint pain, tongue thrust influences temporomandibular joint clicking, and bruxism does affect trismus.
Introduction: The incidence of oral premalignant and malignant lesions is on the rise due to an increased number of people taking in tobacco and alcohol related habits. Material and Methods: 1028 patients with tobacco, alcohol and areca nut habits attending our Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology formed the study sample. An interviewer based questionnaire was used to record the habit details. All the patients were then examined clinically for the presence of lesions. Chi square and Fisher exact tests were used to assess the statistical significance of the study parameters. Results: Males had a higher prevalence and comprised 87.9% of the sample. The commonest habit in this study sample was smoking (39.2%) followed by smokeless tobacco use (28.1%). Out of the 1028 patients with habits 40% had no clinically detectable changes in their mucosa. Of the mucosal changes leukoplakia (14%) was the commonest. Conclusions: This study provided information about the habit trends in the patients visiting this institution. The study may serve as a useful tool in educating the patients about the deleterious effects of oral tobacco, alcohol and betel exposure.
Objectives : This study aims to prepare the basic data of the teeth color by measuring tooth mode using the color of the maxillary central incisor of the college students in their twenties as the dental colorimeter, and oral health and eating habit characteristics were examined. Methods : The maxillary central incisor(1 teeth) of the subjects of study as 467 students(male 89, female 378) was measured during the period from November 14, December 2 2011, so the color of total 467 teeth were examined, and oral health and eating habit characteristics were researched. Results : 1. As the results of measurement of the shade, value, hue of maxillary central incisor by the general characteristics of the subject, the major(shipbuilding information, special rehabilitation for young children) was higher at 3.3 of the shade, and the grade(1), age($$\geq_-20$$), major(beauty culture & cosmetic, occupational therapy) showed higher at +2 of the value, and the grade(1) and all major showed higher at R3 of the hue. 2. As the results of measurement of the shade, value, hue of maxillary central incisor by the oral health characteristics, the subjective teeth color(yellow) and the education of oral health(no) showed higher at 2.5 of the shade. 3. As the results of measurement of the shade, value, hue of maxillary central incisor by the eating habit characteristics of the subjects, the chocolate showed higher at 3.0 and 2.0 of the shade, and the red pepper paste showed higher at +2 and STD of the value, and the green tea showed higher at $R_3$ of the hue. Conclusions : This study demonstrates that the color of the maxillary central incisor showed differences various tendency according to the oral health and eating habit characteristics.
Purpose: This study is intended to survey male and female university students to see if there is correlation between temporomandibular disorder and oral habits known to cause temporomandibular disorder. Methods: A survey was conducted to 400 male and female university students attending two universities located in Daegu Metropolitan City and Gyeongsangbuk-do to examine if there is correlation between oral habits and temporomandibular disorder. Among total 400 questionnaire sheets, 334 (83.5%) sheets were used for final analysis except for those unreliably answered or containing error. Results: Female students showed a higher prevalence rate of temporomandibular joint pain than male students, and those having the habit of resting jaw on hand indicated a higher prevalence rate of temporomandibular joint pain, temporomandibular joint clicking, or trismus than normal students not having it. Also, those having the habit of tooth clenching showed a significantly higher prevalence rate of temporomandibular joint pain or temporomandibular joint clicking than normal students not having it. Conclusion: It can be concluded that the habit of resting jaw on hand is closely related with temporomandibular disorder like temporomandibular joint pain, temporomandibular joint clicking, or trismus, and the habit of tooth clenching is significantly correlated with such symptoms as temporomandibular joint pain and temporomandibular joint clicking.

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to identify the perceived symptoms of oral and temporomandibular joint disorders in adults and to analyze the factors affecting subjective symptoms of temporomandibular joint disorders. Methods: 249 adults over 20 years old who had subjective symptoms of temporomandibular joint disorders were surveyed and analyzed. Independent t-test and ANOVA test were used to examine the relationship between oral habits and temporomandibular joint disorder according to general characteristics. $Scheff{\acute{e}}$ test was used for post-hoc analysis. Multiple regression analysis was conducted to examine the factors affecting oral habits and temporomandibular joint disorder. Results: First, the factors affecting oral and habitual behaviors were married (p<0.05) and monthly income between 1 million~1.9 million won (p<0.001), higher temporomandibular joint disorder (p<0.01) And the degree of habit was increased. Second, the factors affecting temporomandibular joint disorder were increased in occupation (p<0.05) and the degree of oral habit (p<0.01). Conclusions: In conclusion, it was confirmed that oral habit influences temporomandibular joint disorder. Especially, it is suggested that prevention and promotion of temporomandibular joint disorder are needed to recognize the removal of oral habits.
This study was performed to investigate the dental ages of the patients with temporomandibular disorders(TMD), using a method of age estimation by dental attrition, and to compare the differences of dental ages between control and experimental groups. In addition, they were compared according to oral habit. Clinical evaluations for the tooth attrition were to examine the study models of 65 TMD patients (mean age of 26.6 years, aged 18 to 40) had visited to the Department of Oral Medicine and Orofacial Pain Clinic, Dental Hospital, Dankook University as a experimental group and 22 volunteers (mean age of 25.4 years, aged 23 to 36) without TMD as a control group. Age differences were calculated subtracting real age from estimated age. Age differences between experimental and control groups were compared statistically between groups classified according to oral habit. As a results, dental age was increased significantly in TMD patients compared with normal subjects. Oral parafunctions which increased dental age were bruxism, clenching and heavy chewing in order. Conclusively, it should be consider that there can be much discrepancy between real age and age estimated by dental attrition in patients with TMD. In addition, it is suggested that dentists should try to protect the tooth from attrition by various parafunction on treating the patients with TMD.

This study used a structured questionnaire to analyze the effects of oral habits and stress on temporomandibular disorders in high school students. A total of 339 students attending high schools in Ulsan agreed to participate in the study. Data was analyzed using the SPSS Statistics ver. 18.0 for Windows program, t-test, one-way ANOVA, correlation, and regression analysis. Our results reveal that the temporomandibular disorder index is statistically correlated with the oral habit index, school life stress index, family life stress index, interpersonal stress index, and egosphere stress index (p≤0.01). The oral habit index had maximum influence on the temporomandibular disorder index. Moreover, higher the stress level in egosphere stress, greater significant differences were observed in the temporomandibular disorder index (p≤0.01). In other words, persistence of oral habits and non-addressal of stress increased the likelihood of experiencing temporomandibular disorders in adulthood. This was determined by the regression formula Y (temporomandibular disorder index) = 2.563 + 0.550X1 (oral habit index) + 0.134X2 (egosphere stress index). Thus, bad oral habits and stress in adolescence can be the potential cause of jaw joint disorders in adulthood. We believe that measures are needed to actively recognize and improve oral habits, and properly cope with stress during adolescence.
The aim of the present study was to investigate a relation between occlusal wear area and occlusal contact patterns. For the purpose, occlusal wear area were measured in 58 dental students and in 129 patients with temporomandibular disorders(TMDs) from dental casts. Teeth used in this study were from canine to second molar on both sides in upper arch, totally ten. Occlusal wear area on casts was marked by pencil and photocopies, and then, the area was measured with planimeter. Occlusal relation was clinically examined with regard to Angle's classification, chewing side preference, lateral guidance pattern and bruxing and/or clenching habit. T-Scan, electronic occlusal contact analyzer, was used to record occlusal contact number, contact force, contact time and occlusal balance that is TLR(total left-right statistics) during tooth contact. All measurement were repeated 3 times and the average value was used for data processing. The obtained results were as follows : 1. Mean value of occlusal wear area did not differ significantly between dental students and patients. 2. There ws not significant difference in wear area between chewing side and non-chewing side in both groups. 3. Occlusal wear area was significantly increased with age in both groups. 4. Three subgroups divided by Angle's classification did not show any difference in occlusal wear area among them, but three subgroups divided by lateral guidance pattern showed slightly significant difference between canine guide subgroup and group function subgroup in patients. Occlusal wear ares\a in group function subgroup wear larger than canine guide subgroup. 5. Mean value of wear area in patients with bruxing and/or clenching habit did not differ from those in patients without such habit. 6. Correlationship among items related to occlusal contact pattern were highly consistent and significant in dental students and only one item significantly correlated with occlusal wear area was tooth contact time.
The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of stress on the habits of temporomandibular disorder in college students. The subjects in this study were 396 male and female students who were in their first to fourth years at five different colleges located in Jeollabuk-do. The findings of the study were as follows: As for the degree of bad oral habits, "sleeping on one side" was the most common bad oral habit, followed by "enjoying caffeinated beverages," "resting the chin on the hand or a thing" and "chewing food in one side of the mouth only." As a result of analyzing their stress by general characteristics including gender, there were significant differences according to gender in stress about school life problems, one's own problems and economic difficulties, and only stress about one's own problems statistically significantly varied with academic year. When the correlation of the factors was analyzed, perceived stress about school life problems and one's own problems had a significant positive correlation with bad oral habit scores. When a multiple linear regression analysis was made to determine the influence of general characteristics and perceived stress on bad oral habit scores, gender, academic year, self-rated oral health status, stress about school life problems and stress about one's own problems were identified as significant variables. The findings of the study illustrated that there was an organic relationship between the bad oral habits and stress of the college students.
Background: In India smokeless tobacco users account for 25.9% of total tobacco use, Gutkha being the most common form. This study evaluated the association between serum lipid profile and Gutkha use as an early diagnostic and/or prognostic indicator for oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) and oral cancer (Oral Ca) in non-smokers and non-alcohol consumers. Materials and Methods: A total of 163 participants were recruited from two sites in India. Participants were divided into four groups: individuals without any Gutkha chewing habit and without any oral lesions (control group), individuals with Gutkha chewing habit but without any oral lesions (GWL), patients with a confirmed clinical diagnosis of OSMF, and patients with a confirmed diagnosis of Oral Ca. Mixed linear modelling (MLM) was conducted to detect the change in mean serum lipid levels among four groups. Results: The sample consisted of 69% males and 31% females. Results of MLM show an inverse relationship between serum lipid levels in OSMF, and Oral Ca groups when compared to the control group. Conclusions: The results of our study demonstrated that GWL, OSMF and Oral Ca patients had lower serum lipid levels. Low serum lipid levels could be an indicator of initial neoplastic changes in oral cancer.
