Facial regions as detected by using the optimum facial color of I-component in YIQ model and the difference of images adaptively selected. And eye regions are extracted by using Sobel operator, projection, and the geometric location of eyes Hierarchical feature analysis is used to classify facial states, and automata technique is applied to the sequence of facial pose states to recognize 13 gestures: Gaze Upward, Downward, Left ward, Rightward, Forward, Backward Left Wink Right Wink Left Double Wink, Left Double Wink , Right Double Wink Yes, and No As an experimental result with total 1,488 frames acquired from 8 persons, it shows 99.3% extraction rate for facial regions, 95.3% extraction rate for eye regions 94.1% recognition rate for facial states and finally 99.3% recognition rate for head gestures. .
The mechanical properties and durability of concrete pavements may be degraded in extreme situations, resulting in the need for partial repair or total replacement. During the past few decades, there has been a growing body of research on substituting a portion of Portland cement with alternative cementitious materials for improving concrete properties. In this study, two different configurations of powdered and granulated blast furnace slag were implemented, replacing fine aggregates (by 12 wt.%) and Portland cement (by 0, 20, 40, and 60 wt.%) in the making of roller-compacted concrete (RCC) mixes. The specimens were fabricated to investigate the mechanical properties and durability specifications, involving freeze-thaw, salt-scaling, and water absorption resistance. The experimental results indicated that the optimum mechanical properties of RCC mixes could be achieved when 20-40 wt.% of powdered slag was added to concrete mixes containing slag aggregates. Accordingly, the increases in compressive, tensile, and flexural strengths were 45, 50, and 28%, in comparison to the control specimen at the age of 90 days. Also, incorporating 60 wt.% of powdered slag gave rise to the optimum mix plan in terms of freeze-thaw resistance such that a negligible strength degradation was experienced after 300 cycles. In addition, the optimal moisture content of the proposed RCC mixtures was measured to be in the range of 5 to 6.56%. Furthermore, the partial addition of granulated slag was found to be more advantageous than using entirely natural sand in the improvement of the mechanical and durability characteristics of all mixture plans.

This study was intended to develop a cost function for the natural air in-bin drying: system which could lead to an optimization of the drying system cost. Based on the cost function developed, a series of simulated drying tests were conducted with 10-year weather data (1970~1979) for 7 different regions by applying an appropriate levels of system factors. System performance factors treated in this study were initial moisture content, airflow rate, bin diameter and grain depth. An optimization procedure to find the least cost system was developed as follows: First, the worst year of the past decade was determined in consideration of the dryiang time and maximum dry matter loss. Second, the minimum airflow rate for a fixed bin diameter and grain depth was determined. Third, the optimum grain depth was found for the minimum airflow rate with different initial moisture contents and bin diameters. The results obtained in this study are summarized as follows: 1. The optimization procedure developed in this study was able to reduce the time and efforts significantly. 2. Optimum values of drying parameters including airflow rate, grain depth, and fan size were determined for different initial moisture contents and bin diameters in each region. The results are shown in Tables 3 to 9. 3. Optimum grain depths decreased as the initial moisture content and airflow rate increased. 4. Drying time for the least cost system should be reduced with higher initial moisture content and lower drying potential to prevent grain spoilage. 5. The fixed cost was 65 to 75 percent of the total system cost and the variable cost was 25 to 35 percent. To reduce the fixed cost it is desirable to use a drying bin 2 or 3 times a year.

An advanced design environment , which is based on adaptive and knowledge -based finite elements (INTELMESH), has been developed. Unlike other approaches, INTEMMESH incorporates the information about the object geometry as well as the boundary and loading conditions to generate an ${\alpha}$-priori finite element mesh which is more refined around the critical regions of the problem domain. INTEMMESH is designed for planar domains and axisymmetric 3-D structures of elasticity and heat transfer subjected to mechanical and thermal loading . It intelligently identifies the critical regions/points in the problem domain and utilize the new concepts of substructuring and wave propagation to choose the proper mesh size for them. INTEMMESH generates well-shaped triangular elements by applying trangulartion and Laplacian smoothing procedures. The adaptive analysis involves the intial finite elements analyze and an efficient ${\alpha}$-posteriori error analysis involves the initial finite element anal sis and an efficient ${\alpha}$-posteriori error analysis and estimation . Once a problem is defined , the system automatically builds a finite element model and analyzes the problem though automatic iterative process until the error reaches a desired level. It has been shown that the proposed approach which initiates the process with an ${\alpha}$-priori, and near optimum mesh of the object , converges to the desired accuracy in less time and at less cost. Such an advanced design/analysis environment will provide the capability for rapid product development and reducing the design cycle time and cost.

A novel decision criterion for weak M-ary signals is proposed in this paper. In the sense of minimizing the error probability, the proposed decision criterion is optimum when the signal strength approaches zero. In Part 1, the proposed detection criterion is proposed and investigated in detail, some interesting properties of the proposed decision criterion are described, and examples of decision regions are obtained. Based on the proposed detection criterion, a detection scheme for ultra wideband multiple access systems is investigated in the presence of impulsive interference in Part 2.
It is well understood that concentrated forces applied in the plane of a beam or panel (such as a wall or slab) lead to splitting forces developing within a disturbed region forming beyond the bearing zone. In a linearly elastic material the length of the disturbed region is approximately equal to the depth of the member. In concrete structures, however, the length of the disturbed region is a function of the orthotropic properties of the concrete-steel composite. In the detailing of steel reinforcement within the disturbed regions two limit states must be satisfied; strength and serviceability (in this case the serviceability requirement being acceptable crack widths). If the design requires large redistribution of stresses, the member may perform poorly at service and/or overload. In this paper the results of a plane stress finite element investigation of concentrated loads on reinforced concrete panels are presented. Two cases are examined (i) panels loaded concentrically, and (ii) panels loaded eccentrically. The numerical investigation suggests that the bursting force distribution is substantially different from that calculated using elastic design methods currently used in some codes of practice. The optimum solution for a uniformly reinforced bursting region was found to be with the reinforcement distributed from approximately 0.2 times the effective depth of the member ($0.2D_e$) to between $1.2D_e$ and $1.6D_e$. Strut and tie models based on the finite element analyses are proposed herein.
This study was investigated on the morphological characteristics of rice grain as affected by three fertilizer application treatments. Of no-nitrogen, optimum nitrogen, and heavy nitrogen without potassium in three regions of Suweon (Mid-West Plain Zone), Ichon(Mid-Inland Plain Zone), and Kyehwado(South-charyung Mts. Plain Zone) with four varieties, i.e., three Tonsil types(Geumgangbyeo, Milyang 23, and Chilseongbyeo) and one japonica type(Chucheongbyeo, Akibare in Japanese name). The results obtained were as follows: The increase of nitrogen application caused an increase of grain length in rough rice and grain width in milled rice, resulting in a decrease of the width/thickness ratio in milled rice. The width and thickness of rice grain produced in Kyehwado were smaller than those in the other regions. Therefore, the ratio of length/width and length/thickness in rice grain produced in Kyehwado was larger. The one thousand grain weight of rice was heavier at the optimum nitrogen level than at the no-nitrogen and heavy nitrogen without potassium treatment levels. The weight percentage of hull in rough rice grain decreased in accordance with the increase of nitrogen application, while the weight percentage of bran in brown rice was constant. This suggested that for the normal development of rice grain a constant ratio of bran is needed. The morphological change of rice grain by fertilizer treatments and the change of region cultivated could not be distinguished from the native characteristics of the variety. Other grain characteristics were discussed in view of treatment and regional effects.

When Deterministic Design Optimization (DDO) methods are used, deterministic optimum designs are frequently pushed to the design constraint boundary, leaving little or no room for tolerances (or uncertainties) in design, manufacture, and operating processes. In the Reliability-Based Design Optimization (RBDO) model for robust system design, the mean values of uncertain system variables are usually used as design variables, and the cost is optimized subject to prescribed probabilistic constraints as defined by a nonlinear mathematical programming problem. Therefore, a RBDO solution that reduces the structural weight in uncritical regions does not only provide an improved design but also a higher level of confidence in the design. In this work, we seek to improve the quality of RBDO processes using efficient optimization techniques with object of improving the resulting objective function and satisfying the required constraints. Our recent RBDO developments show its efficiency and applicability in this context. So we present some recent structural engineering applications demonstrate the efficiency of these developed RBDO methods.
In automotive industry, applying of Mg alloy to autobody has been issued recently as a light metal. But poor resistance spot weldability of Mg alloy is blocking commercialization. So studies on improving resistance spot weldability of Mg alloy is increasing continuously. For reduce loss of heat input during welding, inverter DC power source is considered because of short rise time to target welding current. But rapid rising of welding current can increase temperature rapidly in nugget and oxide film between electrode and base metal, and that causes generating expulsion on low welding current range. In this study, for increase optimum welding current range and prevent generating expulsion, applicate various types of welding current waveform controls during resistance spot welding. For analysis effects of each current waveform control, acceptable welding current regions according to electrode force and welding time is determined and lobe diagram is derived. In result, pre heat is proposed as optimum type of welding current waveform control.

Image segmentation is a very crucial step in effective digital image processing. In the past decade, several research contributions were given related to this field. However, a general segmentation algorithm suitable for various applications is still challenging. Among several image segmentation approaches, graph-based approach has gained popularity due to its basic ability which reflects global image properties. This paper proposes a methodology to partition the image with its pixel, region and texture along with its intensity. To make segmentation faster in large images, it is processed in parallel among several CPUs. A way to achieve this is to split images into tiles that are independently processed. However, regions overlapping the tile border are split or lost when the minimum size requirements of the segmentation algorithm are not met. Here the contributions are made to segment the image on the basis of its pixel using min-cut/max-flow algorithm along with edge-based segmentation of the image. To segment on the basis of the region using a homogenous optimum cut algorithm with boundary segmentation. On the basis of texture, the object type using spectral partitioning technique is identified which also minimizes the graph cut value.
