Hydrofoil is the direct component to generate thrust for underwater glider. It is significant to improve propulsion efficiency of hydrofoil. This study optimizes the shape of a hydrofoil using Free-Form Deformation (FFD) parametric approach and Surrogate-based Optimization (SBO) algorithm. FFD approach performs a volume outside the hydrofoil and the position changes of control points in the volume parameterize hydrofoil's geometric shape. SBO with adaptive parallel sampling method is regarded as a promising approach for CFD-based optimization. Combination of existing sampling methods is being widely used recently. This paper chooses several well-known methods for combination. Investigations are implemented to figure out how many and which methods should be included and the best combination strategy is provided. As the hydrofoil can be stretched from airfoil, the optimizations are carried out on a 2D airfoil and a 3D hydrofoil, respectively. The lift-drag ratios are compared among optimized and original hydrofoils. Results show that both lift-drag-ratios of optimized hydrofoils improve more than 90%. Besides, this paper preliminarily explores the optimization of hydrofoil with root-tip-ratio. Results show that optimizing 3D hydrofoil directly achieves slightly better results than 2D airfoil.
Shape of a multi-blades centrifugal fan is optimized by response surface method based on three-dimensional Navier-Stokes analysis. For numerical analysis, Reynolds-averaged Wavier-Stokes equations with standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model are transformed into non-orthogonal curvilinear coordinate system, and are discretized with finite volume approximations. Due to the large number of blades in this centrifugal fan, the flow inside of the fan is regarded as steady flow by introducing the impeller force models for economic calculations. Optimizations with and without constraints are carried out. Design variables, location of cur off, radius of cut off, expansion angle of scroll and width of impeller were selected to optimize the shapes of scroll and blades. Data points for response evaluations were selected by D-optimal design, and linear programming method was used for the optimization on the response surface. As a main result of the optimization, the efficiency was successfully improved. The correlation of efficiency with relative size of inactive zone at the exit of impeller is discussed as well as with average momentum fluxes in the scroll.

This paper presents a new approach for large-scale generator maintenance scheduling optimizations. The generator preventive maintenance scheduling problems are typical discrete dynamic n-dimensional vector optimization ones with several inequality constraints. The considered objective function to be minimized a subset of{{{{ { R}^{n } }}}} space is the variance (i.g., second-order momentum) of operating reserve margin to levelize risk or reliability during a year. By its nature of the objective function, the optimal solution can only be obtained by enumerating all combinatorial states of each variable, a task which leads to computational explosion in real-world maintenance scheduling problems. This paper proposes a new priority search mechanism based on each generator's discrete sensitivity value which was analytically developed in this study. Unlike the conventional capacity-based priority search, it can prevent the local optimal trap to some extents since it changes dynamically the search tree in each iteration. The proposed method have been applied to two test systems (i.g., one is a sample system with 10 generators and the other is a real-world lage scale power system with 280 generators), and the results anre compared with those of the conventional capacith-based search method and combinatorial optimization method to show the efficiency and effectiveness of the algorithm.

In the present study, sizing and shape optimizations are performed based on the reduced system of large-scaled problem. In the analysis part to achieve efficiency and reliability of computation, two-level condensation scheme is applied. In the construction of reduced system of large scaled problems, it is much more efficient to use sub-domain method. Thus, in the present paper, two-level reduction method combined with sub-domain method is employed. Once the reduced system is constructed, it is straightforward to obtain design sensitivities from the analysis results of the reduced system We use semi-analytic method to obtain design sensitivities. Performance of the efficiency and reliability of the present reduction method in the structural optimization problem is demonstrated through the numerical examples. The present framework of reduction method should serve as a fast and reliable design tool in analysis and design of large-scaled dynamic problems.
This paper focuses on a systematical and in-depth analysis of the reactive power and soft-switching regions of Dual Active Bridge (DAB) converters with dual-phase-shift (DPS) control to achieve high efficiency in a wide operating range. The key features of the DPS operating modes are characterized and verified by analytical calculation and experimental tests. The mathematical expressions of the reactive power are derived and the reductions of the reactive power are illustrated with respect to a wide range of output power and voltage conversion ratios. The ZVS soft-switching boundary of the DPS is presented and one more leg with ZVS capability is achieved compared with the CPS control. With the selection of the optimal operating mode, the optimal phase-shift pair is determined by performance indices, which include the minimum peak or rms inductor current. All of the theoretical analysis and optimizations are verified by experimental tests. The experimental results with the DPS demonstrate the efficiency improvement for different load conditions and voltage conversion ratios.

This paper presents a new approach for solving the problem of maintenance scheduling of generating units using a binary particle swarm optimization (BPSO). In this paper, we find the optimal solution of the maintenance scheduling of generating units within a specific time horizon using a binary particle swarm optimization algorithm, which is the discrete version of a conventional particle swarm optimization. It is shown that the BPSO method proposed in this paper is effective in obtaining feasible solutions in the maintenance scheduling of generating unit. IEEE reliability test systems(1996) including 32-generators are selected as a sample system for the application of the proposed algorithm. From the result, we can conclude that the BPSO can find the optimal solution of the maintenance scheduling of the generating unit with the desirable degree of accuracy and computation time, compared to other heuristic search algorithm such as genetic algorithms. It is also envisaged that BPSO can be easily implemented for similar optimizations and scheduling problems in power system problems to obtain better solutions and improve convergence performance.

A study on optimal placement of constrained layer damping treatment for vibration control of automotive panels is presented. The effectiveness of damping treatment depends upon design parameters such as choice of damping materials, locations and size of the treatment. This paper proposes a CAE (Computer Aided Engineering) methodology based on finite element analysis to optimize damping treatment. From the equivalent modeling technique, it is found that the best damping performance occurs as the viscoelstic patch is placed by means of the modal strain energy method of bare structural panels to identify flexible regions, which in turn facilitates optimizations of damping treatment with respect to location and size. Different configurations of partially applied damping layer treatment have been analyzed for their effectiveness in realizing maximum system damping with minimum mass of the applied damping material. Moreover, simulated frequency response function of the automotive roof with and without damping treatments are compared, which show the benefits of applying damping treatment. Finally, the optimized damping treatment configuration is validated by comparing the locations and the size of the treatment with that of an experimental modal test conducted on roof compartment.

Let K be a nonempty closed convex subset of a real Hilbert space H. Approximation solvability of a system of nonlinear variational inequality (SNVI) problems, based on the convergence of projection methods, is given as follows: find elements $x^*,\;y^*{\in}H$ such that $g(x^*),\;g(y^*){\in}K$ and $$<\;{\rho}T(y^*)+g(x^*)-g(y^*),\;g(x)-g(x^*)\;{\geq}\;0\;{\forall}\;g(x){\in}K\;and\;for\;{\rho}>0$$$$<\;{\eta}T(x^*)+g(y^*)-g(x^*),\;g(x)-g(y^*)\;{\geq}\;0\;{\forall}g(x){\in}K\;and\;for\;{\eta}>0,$$ where T: $H\;{\rightarrow}\;H$ is a relaxed $g-{\gamma}-r-cocoercive$ and $g-{\mu}-Lipschitz$ continuous nonlinear mapping on H and g: $H{\rightarrow}\;H$ is any mapping on H. In recent years general variational inequalities and their algorithmic have assumed a central role in the theory of variational methods. This two-step system for nonlinear variational inequalities offers a great promise and more new challenges to the existing theory of general variational inequalities in terms of applications to problems arising from other closely related fields, such as complementarity problems, control and optimizations, and mathematical programming.
Topology optimization of structures seeking the best distribution of mass in a design space to improve the structural performance and reduce the weight of a structure is one of the most comprehensive issues in the field of structural optimization. In addition to structures stiffness as the most common objective function, frequency optimization is of great importance in variety of applications too. In this paper, an efficient multi-objective Bi-directional Evolutionary Structural Optimization (BESO) method is developed for topology optimization of frequency and stiffness in continuum structures simultaneously. A software package including a Matlab code and Abaqus FE solver has been created for the numerical implementation of multi-objective BESO utilizing the weighted function method. At the same time, by considering the weaknesses of the optimized structure in single-objective optimizations for stiffness or frequency problems, slight modifications have been done on the numerical algorithm of developed multi-objective BESO in order to overcome challenges due to artificial localized modes, checker boarding and geometrical symmetry constraint during the progressive iterations of optimization. Numerical results show that the proposed Multiobjective BESO method is efficient and optimal solutions can be obtained for continuum structures based on an existent finite element model of the structures.
This paper presents a fuzzy optimum design of axisymmetrically loaded thin shells of revolution. This paper consists of two parts, namely: an elastic analysis using the new curved element for finite element analysis developed in this study for axisymmetrically loaded thin shells of revolution, and the volume optimization on the basis of results evaluated from the elastic analysis. The curved element to meridian direction is used to develop the computer program. The results obtained from the computer program are compared by exact solution of each analytic example. The fuzzy optimizations of thin shells of revolution are done using [Model 2] which is in the form of a conventional crisp objective function and constraints with non-membership function, and nonlinear optimum GINO (General Interactive Optimizer) programming. In this paper, design examples show that the fuzzy optimum designs of the steel water tank and the steel dome roof could provide significant cost savings.
