Sweep geometric models are based on the notion of moving a curve, surface or solid along some path. Sweeping allows definition of prismatic shell surfaces in a simple way, This paper describes an application of sweep geometric models for the optimization of prismatic shells. This geometric model is integrated with finite element formulations. A nine-node degenerated shell element is adopted to calculate the response of prismatic shells. Several examples we presented to demonstrate the process of optimization. From numerical examples, it is observed that sweep geometric models provide an efficient and reliable way of obtaining optimal solutions for a large class of prismatic shell structures.

One of the most important yet unresolved problems in molecular electronics is the controversy over the number and nature of multiple conductance peaks in single-molecule junctions. Currently, there are three competing explanations of this observation: (1) manifestation of different molecule-electrode contact geometries, (2) formation of gauche defects within the molecular core, (3) involvement of different electrode surface orientations [1]. However, the exact origin of multiple conductance peaks is not yet fully understood, which indicates our incomplete understanding of the scientifically as well as techno-logically important organic-metal contacts. To theoretically resolve this problem, we previously applied a multiscale computational approach that combines force fields molecular dynamics (FF MD), density functional theory (DFT), and matrix Green's function (MGF) calculations [2] to a thermally fluctuating haxanedithiol (C6DT) molecule stretched between flat Au(111) electrodes, but could observe only a single conductance peak [3]. In this presentation, using DFT geometry optimizations and MGF calculations, we consider molecular junctions with more realistic molecule-metal contact conformations and Au(111) electrode surface directions. We also conduct DFT-based molecular dynamics for the highly stretched junction models to confirm our conclusion. We conclude that the S-Au coordination number should be the more dominant factor than the electrode surface orientation.
A ligand-receptor docking program is an indispensible tool in modern pharmaceutical design. An accurate prediction of small molecular docking pose to a receptor is essential in drug design as well as molecular recognition. An effective docking program requires the ability to locate a correct binding pose in a surprisingly complex conformational space. However, there is an inherent difficulty to predict correct binding pose. The odds are more demanding than finding a needle in a haystack. This mainly comes from the flexibility of both ligand and receptor. Because the searching space to consider is so vast, receptor rigidity has been often applied in docking programs. Even nowadays the receptor may not be considered to be fully flexible although there have been some progress in search algorithm. Improving the efficiency of searching algorithm is still in great demand to explore other applications areas with inherently flexible ligand and/or receptor. In addition to classical search algorithms such as molecular dynamics, Monte Carlo, genetic algorithm and simulated annealing, rather recent algorithms such as tabu search, stochastic tunneling, particle swarm optimizations were also found to be effective. A good search algorithm would require a good balance between exploration and exploitation. It would be a good strategy to combine algorithms already developed. This composite algorithms can be more effective than an individual search algorithms.

The performance of General-Purpose computation on Graphics Processing Units (GPGPU) is heavily dependent on the memory access behavior. This sensitivity is due to a combination of the underlying Massively Parallel Processing (MPP) execution model present on GPUs and the lack of architectural support to handle irregular memory access patterns. Application performance can be significantly improved by applying memory-access-pattern-aware optimizations that can exploit knowledge of the characteristics of each access pattern. In this paper, we present an algorithmic methodology to semi-automatically find the best mapping of memory accesses present in serial loop nest to underlying data-parallel architectures based on a comprehensive static memory access pattern analysis. To that end we present a simple, yet powerful, mathematical model that captures all memory access pattern information present in serial data-parallel loop nests. We then show how this model is used in practice to select the most appropriate memory space for data and to search for an appropriate thread mapping and work group size from a large design space. To evaluate the effectiveness of our methodology, we report on execution speedup using selected benchmark kernels that cover a wide range of memory access patterns commonly found in GPGPU workloads. Our experimental results are reported using the industry standard heterogeneous programming language, OpenCL, targeting the NVIDIA GT200 architecture.

In this paper, design optimization for mixed-flow pump impellers and diffusers has been studied using a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code and DOE (design of experiments). We also discussed how to improve the performance of the mixed-flow pump by designing the impeller and diffuser. Geometric design variables were defined by the vane plane development, which indicates the blade-angle distributions and length of the impeller and diffusers. The vane plane development was controlled using the blade-angle in a fixed meridional shape. First, the design optimization of the defined impeller geometric variables was achieved, and then the flow characteristics were analyzed in the point of incidence angle at the diffuser leading edge for the optimized impeller. Next, design optimizations of the defined diffuser shape variables were performed. The importance of the geometric design variables was analyzed using $2^k$ factorial designs, and the design optimization of the geometric variables was determined using the response surface method (RSM). The objective functions were defined as the total head and the total efficiency at the design flow rate. Based on the comparison of CFD results between the optimized pump and base design models, the reason for the performance improvement was discussed.

As the Internet continues to transform the commerce, the method of payment is one of critical components to conduct successful business across the internet. An electronic cash has all characteristics of traditional commodity cash and ensures security for all transactions. Accordingly an internet billing system based electronic cash is expected as the secure and efficient payment method in future electronic commerce. Digital Contents such as digital goods and services have the special characteristic that both the delivery of the goods and the transfer of money ran be accomplished on the same network. This allows the optimizations in the design of an electronic commerce system. In this paper, we propose an electronic payment protocol which is especially designed to purchase digital contents through internet. The proposed protocol guarantees anonymity by using a virtual ID, and minimizes payment processing steps.

Although it is widely used to find an optimum setting of manufacturing process parameters in a variety of engineering fields, the Taguchi method has a difficulty in dealing with multi-response situations in which several response variables should be considered at the same time. For example, electrode wear, surface roughness, and material removal rate are important process response variables in an electrical discharge machining (EDM) process. A simultaneous optimization should be accomplished. Many researches from various disciplines have been conducted for such multi-response optimizations. One of them is a fuzzy logic approach presented by Lin et al. [1]. They showed that two response characteristics are converted into a single performance index based upon fuzzy logic. However, it is pointed out that information regarding relative importance of response variables is not considered in that method. In order to overcome this problem, a desirability function can be adopted, which frequently appears in the statistical literature. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for the multi-response optimization by incorporating fuzzy logic into desirability function. The present method is illustrated by an EDM data of Lin and Lin [2].
Corrugated-core sandwich panels are prevalent for many applications in industries. The researches performed with the aim of optimization of such structures in the literature have considered a deterministic approach. However, it is believed that deterministic optimum points may lead to high-risk designs instead of optimum ones. In this paper, an effort has been made to provide a reliable and robust design of corrugated-core sandwich structures through stochastic and probabilistic multi-objective optimization approach. The optimization is performed using a coupling between genetic algorithm (GA), Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) and finite element method (FEM). To this aim, Prob. Design module in ANSYS is employed and using a coupling between optimization codes in MATLAB and ANSYS, a connection has been made between numerical results and optimization process. Results in both cases of deterministic and probabilistic multi-objective optimizations are illustrated and compared together to gain a better understanding of the best sandwich panel design by taking into account reliability and robustness. Comparison of results with a similar deterministic optimization study demonstrated better reliability and robustness of optimum point of this study.

The performance and durability of Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells (PEFCs) are strongly influenced by the uniformity of current density, temperature, species distributions inside a cell In order to obtain uniform distributions in them, the optimal design of flowfield must be a key factor. In this paper, the numerical study of land/channel flowfield optimizations is performed, using a multi-dimensional, multi-phase, non-isothermal PEFC model. Numerical simulations reveal more uniform current density and HFR(High Frequency Resistance) distributions and thus better PEFC performance with narrower land/channel width where the less severe oxygen depletion effect near the land region and more uniform contact resistance variation along the in-plane direction are achieved. The present study elucidates detailed effects of land/channel width and assist in identifying optimal flow-field design strategies for the operation of PEFCs.
The Android operating system currently has a proven method of Unity optimization. However, the Tizen operating system does not know how effective the existing Unity optimization method can be applied to the Tizen operating system and how effective it is. In this paper, we analyze the efficiency of applying Unity optimizing techniques of Android operating system to Tizen operating system. To get this purpose, this study investigates whether the existing Unity optimization method can be applied to Tizen operating system and evaluates the efficiency of the method through Unity Profiler. This research will allow us to further evaluate the Unity optimizations for the existing Android operating system in the future.
