  • It is very important to design the shape of container in HIPing process since the final shape and relative density distribution of the product are decisively dependent on the shape of container. A derivative based approach to determine the shape of container in HIPing process is presented. In this approach the optimal design problem is formulated on the basis of the finite element process. The process model the formulation for process optimal design and the schemes for the evaluation of the design sensitivity and an iterative procedure for optimization are described. In comparison with finite difference scheme the validity of the schemes for the evaluation of the design sensitivity is examined.

  • Efforts for better understanding of the interaction between groundwater recharge and thermal regime of the subsurface medium is gaining momentum for its diverse applications in water resources. A numerical model is developed to simulate temperature variations of the subsurface under time varying groundwater recharge. The model utilizes MacCormack scheme for finite difference approximation of the partial differential equation describing the conductive and advective heat transport. For the estimation of recharge rate, optimization of the model is realized by searching for the unknown parameters which minimize the root-mean-square error between simulated and measured temperatures. Simulation results for 22-year time series data of temperature measurements reveal that the proposed model can accurately simulate subsurface temperature variations resulting from the redistribution of the heat due to the movement of water and it can also estimate temporal variations of recharge. Seasonal variations of recharge and a linear relationship between precipitation and recharge are clearly reflected in the simulated results.

  • This paper proposes a novel method with pseudo-on-line scheme using the optimized look-up table based on the genetic algorithm which does not use the gradient and finds the global optimum of an un-constraint optimization problem. The technique is a pseudo-on-line method that optimally estimates the parameters of fuzzy PID(FPID) controller for systems with non-linearity, using the genetic algorithm. The proposed controller(GFPID) with the auto-tuning function is applied to the on-line and real-time control of speed at 3-phase induction motor, and its computer simulation is carried out. simulation results show that the proposed methodis more excellent that conventional FPID and PID controllers.

  • This paper addresses the foot force distribution problem for quadruped robots with a failed leg. The quadruped robot has fault-tolerant straight-line gaits with one leg in locked-joint failure, and has discontinuous motion with respect to the robot body. The proposed method is operated in two folds. When the robot body stands still, we use the feature that there are always three supporting legs, and by incorporating the theory of zero-interaction force, we calculate the foot forces analytically without resort to any optimization technique. When the robot body moves, the conventional pseudo-inverse algorithm is applied to obtain the foot forces for supporting legs. Simulation results show the validity of the proposed scheme.

  • It is made compulsory to install SPD for the purpose of protecting electric and electronic devices when an abnormal voltage such as lightning occurs to power line using power frequency of 60Hz. Recently, the high speed communication technology utilizing power line is receiving attention again as a communication technology for smart grid. The SPD influences the performances of power line communication when using SPD and power line communication system together. In order to improve the performance of power line communication, a proposed scheme for series connection of gas discharge tube to ZnO varistor was presented. This paper measured the impacts of series connection of GDT to SPD using ZnO varistor on the limit voltage of Class III SPD. This paper also presented the DC operating voltage of GDT which satisfies the limit voltage of power line communication system and SPD simultaneously.

  • This paper presents a study on the influence of different thermo-mechanical processing (TMP) parameters on some required properties such as micro-hardness and Young's modulus of a novel near ${\beta}$ alloy Ti-20.6Nb-13.6Zr-0.5V (TNZV). The TMP scheme comprises of hot working above and below ${\beta}$ phase, solutionizing treatment above and below ${\beta}$ phase coupled with different cooling rates. Factorial design of experiment is used to systematically collect data for micro-hardness and Young's modulus. Validity of assumptions related to the collected data is checked through several diagnostic tests. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) is used to determine the significance of the main and interaction effects. Finally, optimization of the TMP process parameters is also done to achieve optimum values of the micro-hardness and Young's modulus.

  • The present article encompasses a nonlinear finite element (FE) and genetic algorithm (GA) based optimal vibration energy harvesting from nonprismatic piezo-laminated cantilever beams. Three cases of cross section profiles (such as linear, parabolic and cubic) are modelled to analyse the geometric nonlinear effects on the output responses such as displacement, voltage, and power. The simultaneous effects of taper ratios (such as breadth and height taper) on the output power are also studied. The FE based nonlinear dynamic equation of motion has been solved by an implicit integration method (i.e., Newmark method in conjunction with the Newton-Raphson method). Besides this, a real coded GA based constrained optimization scheme has also been proposed to determine the best set of design variables for optimal harvesting of power within the safe limits of beam stress and PZT breakdown voltage.

  • Burrs formed during face milling operations can be very difficult to characterize since there exist several parameters which have complex combined effects that affect the cutting process. Many researchers have attempted to predict burr characteristics including burr size and shape, using various experimental parameters such as cutting speed, feed rate, in-plane exit angle, and number of inserts. However, the results of these studies tend to be limited to a specific process parameter range and to certain materials. In this paper, the Taguchi method, a systematic optimization method for design and analysis of experiments, is introduced to acquire optimum cutting conditions for burr minimization. In addition, an in process monitoring scheme using an artificial neural network is presented for the prediction of burr types.

  • Among various sensitivity evaluation techniques, semi-analytical method is quite popular since this method is more advantageous than analytical method and global finite difference method. However, SAM reveals severe inaccuracy problem when relatively large rigid body motions are identified for individual elements. Such errors result from the numerical differentiation of the pseudo load vector calculated by the finite difference scheme. In the present study, the adjoint variable method combined with complex variable is proposed to obtain the shape and size sensitivity for structural optimization. The complex variable can present accurate results regardless of the perturbation size as well as easy to be implemented. Through a few numerical examples of the static problem for the structural sensitivity, the efficiency and reliability of the adjoint variable method combined with complex variable is demonstrated.
