  • In this paper, the six sigma scheme together with the rigid-viscoplastic finite element method is employed to obtain the optimal metal flow lines of a hot forging according to the six sigma processes, i.e., five steps such as define, measure, analyze, improve and control. Each step is investigated in detail to meet customer's requirements through improvement of product quality. A forging simulator is used for analysis of the metal flow lines of the hot forging, manufactured by a hot press forging machine, under various conditions of major factors determined at each step. The analyzed results are examined in order to reveal the effects of major factors on the metal flow lines and the formed shapes. The effects are then used to find an optimal process and the optimal process with die is devised and tested. The comparison between the required metal flow lines and the experiments shows that the approach is effective for optimal process design in hot forging considering metal flow lines.

  • This paper presents a analysis of the problem of optimal design of the beams with two I-type cross section shapes. These types of beams are simply supported and subject to pure bending. The strength and stability conditions were formulated and analytically solved in the form of mathematical equations. Both global and selected types of local stability forms were taken into account. The optimization problem was defined as bicriteria. The cross section area of the beam is the first objective function, while the deflection of the beam is the second. The geometric parameters of cross section were selected as the design variables. The set of constraints includes global and local stability conditions, the strength condition, and technological and constructional requirements in the form of geometric relations. The optimization problem was formulated and solved with the help of the Pareto concept of optimality. During the numerical calculations a set of optimal compromise solutions was generated. The numerical procedures include discrete and continuous sets of the design variables. Results of numerical analysis are presented in the form of tables, cross section outlines and diagrams. Results are discussed at the end of the work. These results may be useful for designers in optimal designing of thin-walled beams, increasing information required in the decision-making procedure.

  • For a one link flexible arm control, quadratic optimal control is applied to the dynamic modilling which is derived from an assumed mode method. For the quadratic optimal control technique, the full state feedback must be obtained for closing the control loop, but because some of the states in the flexible system(e.g. the rate of change of the time dependent variables of the mode shapes) can not be directly measured, state estimator is necessary to achieve the practical implementation of the optimal controller. When disturbances and measurement noise occur, stochastic approach must be applied to estimating the states of the system. Kalman Filter is used as a stste estimator. Through the simulation, the flexible system with state estimator is compared with the flexible system assuming that all the states can be measured.

  • In this paper, the six sigma scheme is employed together with the rigid-viscoplastic finite element method to obtain the optimal metal flow lines in hot press forging. In general, the six sigma process is consisted of following five steps : define, measure, analyze, improve and control. Each step Is investigated in detail to meet customer's requirements through improvement of product quality. A forging simulator, AFDEX-2D, is used for analysis of the metal flow lines of a multi-stage hot forging process under various conditions of major factors, determined at each step of the six sigma process. The analyzed results are examined in order to reveal the effects of major factors on the metal flow lines and the formed shapes. The effects are used to find an optimal process and the optimal process with die is devised and tested. The comparison between required metal flow lines and experiments shows that the approach is effective for optimal process in hot forging design considering metal flow lines.

  • This paper presents an integrated wind-induced dynamic analysis and computer-based design optimization technique for minimizing the structural cost of general tall buildings subject to static and dynamic serviceability design criteria. Once the wind-induced dynamic response of a tall building structure is accurately determined and the optimal serviceability design problem is explicitly formulated, a rigorously derived Optimality Criteria (OC) method is to be developed to achieve the optimal distribution of element stiffness of the structural system satisfying the wind-induced drift and acceleration design constraints. The effectiveness and practicality of the optimal design technique are illustrated by a full-scale 60-story building with complex 3D mode shapes. Both peak resultant acceleration criteria and frequency dependent modal acceleration criteria are considered and their influences on the optimization results are highlighted. Results have shown that the use of various acceleration criteria has different implications in the habitability evaluations and subsequently different optimal design solutions. The computer based optimization technique provides a powerful tool for the lateral drift and occupant comfort design of tall building structures.

  • This study proposes an optimal design process for a high-frequency transformer that has a large leakage inductance for dual-active-bridge converters. Notably, conventional design processes have large errors in designing leakage transformers because mathematically modeling the leakage inductance of such transformers is difficult. In this work, the geometric parameters of a shell-type transformer are identified, and finite element analysis(FEA) simulation is performed to determine the magnetization inductance, leakage inductance, and copper loss of various shapes of shell-type transformers. Regression models for magnetization and leakage inductances and copper loss are established using the simulation results and the machine learning technique. In addition, to improve the regression models' performance, the regression models are tuned by adding featured parameters that consider the physical characteristics of the transformer. With the regression models, optimal high-frequency transformer designs and the Pareto front (in terms of volume and loss) are determined using NSGA-II. In the Pareto front, a desirable optimal design is selected and verified by FEA simulation and experimentation. The simulated and measured leakage inductances of the selected design match well, and this result shows the validity of the proposed design process.

  • In this paper, We determine the expected travel time for several forks Storage/Retrieval machine which is allowed multiple stops in aisle. When throughput is increased, We propose adding to fork number of each S/R machine rather than adding to number of S/R machine, We also describe such a model which determines the optimal number of each several forks S/R machine subject to constraints on the hourly throughput and warehouse dimensions. Numerical example is presented to compare warehouse shapes against each single fork, twin forks, triple forks S/R machine for various throughput values.

  • In this study, in order to develop the evaluation method for XLPE materials for HVDC cables, DC/Impulse superposition testing system was builded up. Throughout the P-spice simulation, optimal values of the protection resistor for the DC generation system and the blocking capacitor for the Impulse generator were calculated. DC/Impulse superposition system showed good result maintaining their proper wave shapes and amplitudes. This system would be planned to apply to the evaluation of XLPE materials for HVDC cables.

  • In this study, the effect of both process parameters (wheel velocity, friction coefficients between die and billet, etc) and die-shape (abutment height and shape, flash gap, etc.) on the surface defect on forming process is theoretically investigated. For this work, computer simulation was performed by using the DEFORM, a commercial FEM code. Through numerous simulations with different parameters and die shapes, We propose one optimal die shape for CONFORM process which can remove surface defect.
