  • Computer software has gradually become an indispensable elements in many aspects of our daily lives and an important factor in numerous systems. In recent years, it is not unusual that the software cost is more than the hardware cost in many situations. In addition to the costs of developing software, the repair cost resulting from the software failures are even more significant. In this paper, a cost model with warranty cost, time to remove each fault detected in the software system, and delivery delay cost is developed. We use a software reliability model based on non-homogeneous Poisson process (NHPP). We discuss the optimal release policies to minimize the expected total software cost. Numerical examples are provided to illustrate the results.

  • In this paper, we address a single machine non-preemptive n-job scheduling problem to minimize the sum of earliness and tardiness with different release times and due dates. To solve the problem, we propose a genetic algorithm with new crossover and mutation operators to find the job sequencing. For the proposed genetic algorithm, the optimal pair of crossover and mutation rates is investigated. To illustrate the suitability of genetic algorithm, solutions of genetic algorithm are compared with solutions of exhaustive enumeration method in small size problems and tabu search method in large size problems. Computational results demonstrate that the proposed genetic algorithm provides the near-optimal job sequencing in the real world problem.

  • In this paper, faults existing in a software system is classified into three types; simple, degenerative and regenerative faults. The reliability functions and failure rates of both a software module and system which have a mixture of such faults are obtained and the expected number of failures in the system after time T is also derived. Using the formulas obtained, a cost-reliability model and an efficient algorithm for optimal software release time are proposed via nonlinear programming formulation ; minimizing the total test cost with constraints on the failure rates of each module. Application of this model to several cases are presented and it appears to be more realistic.

  • This paper considers a parallel-machine scheduling problem with job release times and sequence-dependent setup times. The objective of this problem is to determine the allocation policy of jobs and the scheduling policy of machines so as to minimize the weighted sum of setup times, delay times, and tardy times. A mathematical model for optimal solution is derived and a meta heuristic algorithm based on the improved ant colony system is proposed in this paper. The performance of the meta heuristic algorithm is evaluated through compare with optimal solutions using randomly generated several examples.

  • Software system which is essential in operating the computer has gradually become an indispensable element in many aspects of our daily lives and an important factor in numerous systems. In recent years, software cost sometimes exceeds the cost of maintaining the hardware system. In addition to the cost necessary to develop the new software system and to maintain the system, the penalty costs incurred due to software failures are even more significant. In this paper, a cost model incorporating the warranty cost, debugging costto remove each fault detected in the software system, and delivery delay cost is developed. A software reliability model based on non-homogeneous Poisson process(NHPP) is established and the optimal software release policies to minimize the expected total software cost are discussed. Numerical examples are provided to illustrate the results.

  • In this paper, a software release model is presented to determine the optimum testing time with consideration of software error type. The software errors are classified into two types, major and minor errors. The software testing is continued until the Nth major error is discovered and corrected. The total cost needed before and after testing time is modeled under nonhomogeneous Poisson error correction model. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the results.

  • We consider a product recovery system that a single product is stocked in order to meet a demand from customers who may return products after usage. This paper addresses a problem of when to release a procurement process to replenish serviceable inventory and how many new products to procure. The structure of the optimal procurement policy is examined and numerically identified as a monotonic threshold curve. A numerical procedure is presented to jointly find the optimal procurement order size, optimal procurement policy, and optimal discounted profit. Sensitivity analysis also indicates that these optimal performance measurements have monotonic properties with respect to system parameters.

  • Purpose: Platelet transplantation is a novel therapeutic strategy for acceleration of wound healing. When applying platelets, efficacy of adding thrombin to stimulate growth factor release from platelets has already been proved. However, no quantitative data of the thrombin treatment has been reported. The purpose of this study was to determine the optimal thrombin concentration to maximize growth factor release of platelets. In particular, this study was designed to quantify levels of platelet derived growth factor(PDGF)-BB, which is a major growth factor contained in the platelets, in vitro. Methods: Fresh platelets were obtained from a blood bank. They were suspended in DMEM/F - 12 and incubated with thrombin of various concentrations. The concentrations of thrombin tested were 0, 6.25, 12.5, 25, 50, 100, 200, and 400 IU/ml. After 30 minutes, 1, 3, 5, and 7 days, the levels of PDGF - BB were measured using enzyme linked immunosorbent assay. Platelets from four donors were included in this study. Each sample was tested in triplicate and the mean value was used as a data for each sample. Results: The addition of thrombin increased the level of PDGF - BB. Increases in storage time of platelets resulted in decreased levels of PDGF - BB. Higher levels of PDGF were detected in consort with increased thrombin concentrations. However, there was no significant difference between samples of 200 and 400 IU/ml concentrations. Conclusion: The results indicate that adding thrombin accelerates the release of growth factors from platelets and the optimal thrombin concentration to maximize this function is 200 IU/ml.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the appropriate operation method minimizing the deviation between irrigation water demand and release from the reservoirs, and the simulation technique was used in the operation model. This model was applied to the grouped reservoirs system consisted of Dongsang, Daia and Keungchun reservoirs and Eowoo-weir in Chonbuk FLIA district. The results obtained in this study are summarized as follows; 1.The area above the Eowoo weir point was divided into 6 small watersheds, and daily inflows from each watershed were calculated by Tank model. It showed that the average annual runoff ratio was 40-60% respectively. 2.Based on the Blaney-Criddle formula daily water requirement of Chonbuk FLIA irrigation area was estimated, mean water requirement for paddy field during the irrigation period was 818.lmm. 3.Using the basic data such as inflow and water demand, four different release types were selected. Through the simulated operation the difference between intake water required at Eowoo-weir point and release from the 3 reservoirs was estimated. The best result was obtained when Daia and Keungchun reservoirs are operated parallelly at fixed release ratio and the release of Dongsang reservoir was determined according to the storage of Daia reservoir.

  • Apreliminary release scheme (PRS) is suggested for the operating rules during flood period to deal with conflicts between flood control and water conservation purposes. PRS can be used to decide the optimum releases, based on the forecast of an oncoming flood and flow rate at the control point downstream when comparing the variable restricted water level (VRWL) for flood control with the minimum required water level (MRWL) for conservation use. The model is applied to Chungju and Daechung reservoirs through simulations of the technique. This study illustrates the procedure to decide the time and size for preliminary releases. Also, effects of duration and magnitude of preliminary release are reviewed based on historicqal flood records. The simulation results indicate that the proposed PRS is effective for the managers to find optimal operating policies during flood period. The proposed scheme can be used with main release scheme using real-time operation on hour-to-hour basis to decide the release for a flood.
