  • In many urban cities, super-tall buildings have been being constructed around New York and Chicago as the center since 1930 to improve the efficiency of land use and respond to new residential type. In terms of energy consumption, super-tall buildings are classified as a top energy consumption building. Also, as time passed, the degradation of energy performance occurs in super-tall buildings like general things so that these cannot show the initial performance planned in the design phase. Accordingly, building owners need to make a plan to apply energy saving measures to existing building during the operation phase. In order to select energy saving measures, calculus-based methods and enumerative schemes have been typically used. However, these methods are time-consuming and previous studies which used these methods have problems with not considering the initial construction cost. Consequently, this study proposes a model for selecting an optimal combination of energy saving measures which derives maximum energy saving within allowable cost using genetic algorithms. As a contribution of this research, it would be expected that a model is utilized as one of the decision-making tools during the planning stage for energy saving.

  • This paper presents an efficient approach for solving economic dispatch (ED) problems with nonconvex cost functions using a 'Mean-Variance Optimization (MVO)' algorithm with Kuhn-Tucker condition and swap process. The aim of the ED problem, one of the most important activities in power system operation and planning, is to determine the optimal combination of power outputs of all generating units so as to meet the required load demand at minimum operating cost while satisfying system equality and inequality constraints. This paper applies Kuhn-Tucker condition and swap process to a MVO algorithm to improve a global minimum searching capability. The proposed MVO is applied to three different nonconvex ED problems with valve-point effects, prohibited operating zones, transmission network losses, and multi-fuels with valve-point effects. Additionally, it is applied to the large-scale power system of Korea. The results are compared with those of the state-of-the-art methods as well.

  • In closed-die hot forging, a billet is formed in dies such that the flow of metal from the die cavity is restricted. Some parts can be forged in a single set of dies, whilst others, due to shape complexity and material flow limitations, must be shaped in multi sets of dies. The purpose of a performing operation is to distribute the volume of the parts such that material flow in the finisher dies will be sound. This study focused on the design of preforms, flash thickness and land width by theoretical calculation and finite element analysis, to manufacture the super hot forging product, 70MC type piston crown used in marine engine. The optimal design of preforms by the finite element analysis and the design experiment achieves adequate metal distribution without any defects and guarantees the minimum forming load and fully filling of the cavity of the die for producing the large piston crown. The maximum loads obtained by finite element analysis are compared with the results of experiments. The loads of the analysis have good agreements with those of the experiment. Results obtained using DEFORM-2D enable the designer and manufacturer of super hot forging dies to be more efficient in this field.

  • The current industrial development and the Increase of population along Nakdong River have produced a rapid Increase of wastewater discharge. This has resulted in problem of water quality control and management. Although many efforts have been carried out, water quality has not significantly improved. The goal of this study is to design a NGIS-based water quality management system for the scientific water quality control and management in the Nakdong River. For general water quality analysis, QULA2E model was applied to the Nakdong River. A sensitivity analysis was made to determine significant parameters and an optimization was made to estimate optimal values. The calibration and verification were performed by using observed water quality data for Nakdong River. A water qualify management system for Nakdong River was made by connecting the QUAL2E model to ArcView. It allows a Windows-based Graphic User Interface(GUI) to implement all operation with regard to water quality analysis. The modeling system in this study will be an efficient NGIS for planning of water quality management.

  • To prepare for a future Korean lunar orbiter mission, semi-optimal lunar capture orbits using finite thrust are designed and analyzed. Finite burn delta-V losses during lunar capture sequence are also analyzed by comparing those with values derived with impulsive thrusts in previous research. To design a hypothetical lunar capture sequence, two different intermediate capture orbits having orbital periods of about 12 hours and 3.5 hours are assumed, and final mission operation orbit around the Moon is assumed to be 100 km altitude with 90 degree of inclination. For the performance of the on-board thruster, three different performances (150 N with $I_{sp}$ of 200 seconds, 300 N with $I_{sp}$ of 250 seconds, 450 N with $I_{sp}$ of 300 seconds) are assumed, to provide a broad range of estimates of delta-V losses. As expected, it is found that the finite burn-arc sweeps almost symmetric orbital portions with respect to the perilune vector to minimize the delta-Vs required to achieve the final orbit. In addition, a difference of up to about 2% delta-V can occur during the lunar capture sequences with the use of assumed engine configurations, compared to scenarios with impulsive thrust. However, these delta-V losses will differ for every assumed lunar explorer's on-board thrust capability. Therefore, at the early stage of mission planning, careful consideration must be made while estimating mission budgets, particularly if the preliminary mission studies were assumed using impulsive thrust. The results provided in this paper are expected to lead to further progress in the design field of Korea's lunar orbiter mission, particularly the lunar capture sequences using finite thrust.

  • Link attributes, such as speed, occupancy, and flow, are essential factors for transportation planning and operation. It is, therefore, one of the most important decision-making problems in intelligent transport system (ITS) to determine the optimal location of a sensor for collecting the information on link attributes. This paper aims to develop a model to determine the optimal location of a sensor to minimize the variability of traffic information on whole networks. To achieve this, a network sensor location model (NSLM) is developed to reflect discrete characteristics of data collection. The variability indices of traffic information are calculated based on the summation of diagonal elements of the variance-covariance matrix. To assess the applicability of the developed model, speed data collected from the dedicated short range communication (DSRC) systems were used in Daegu metropolitan area. The developed model in this study contributes to the enhancement of investment efficiency and the improvement of information accuracy in intelligent transport system (ITS).

  • Recently, RCM(reliability centered maintenance) process is introduced and applied for the planning and implementing efficient and effective maintenance system in terms of optimal rolling stock maintenance. Particularly, cost-time benefits analysis associated with the implementation of RCM for rolling stock maintenance is necessary and required for railway operator in advance. The RCM process was primarily starting from military, airplane and nuclear industries and is now adapted in railway industry for local railway operators. This paper focuses on suggesting the way of connecting the RCM process with railway maintenance activities in the railway operation field. Thus, in order to introduce and establish reliability activities, it needs to review and evaluate the maintenance environment in the organizational point of view. Based on these reviews and evaluations, various maintenance methodologies are reviewed for customizing local railway field situations and establish specific process in the application of major systems on the reliability technology. In this paper, the railway RCM process is proposed for the establishment and construction of the systematic and optimal maintenance system.

  • As the electric power industry is evolving into competitive market scheme, a new paradigm is required for the operation of market. Traditional dispatch algorithm was built based on the optimization model with an objective function and multiple constraints. Commercial market simulator followed the concept of the microeconomic model used in the dispatch algorithm, which is called as analytic method. On analytic method it is prerequisite to procure the exact data for the simulation. It is not easy anymore for each market participant to access to other participants' financial information while it used to be easy for monopoly decision maker to know all the information needed for the optimal operation. Considering the changing situation, it is required to introduce a new method for estimating the market price. This paper proposes an empirical method based on stochastic processes expected to build a capacity planning and long term contracts.
