  • The object of the thermal error compensation system in machine tools is improving the accuracy of a machine tool through real time error compensation. The accuracy of the machine tool totally depends on the accuracy of thermal error model. A thermal error model can be obtained by appropriate combination of temperature variables. The proposed method for optimal variable selection in the thermal error model is based on correlation grouping and successive regression analysis. Collinearity matter is improved with the correlation grouping and the judgment function which minimizes residual mean square is used. The linear model is more robust against measurement noises than an engineering judgement model that includes the higher order terms of variables. The proposed method is more effective for the applications in real time error compensation because of the reduction in computational time, sufficient model accuracy, and the robustness.

  • In this paper, we studied a modified linear prediction method to estimate target signal correctly. Linear prediction method estimate direction-of-arrival to linear combination for any antenna element and other antenna elements. Modified linear prediction used optimal weight and posterior probability method. Through simulation, we are comparative analysis about the performance of proposed, bartlett and MUSIC method. From simulation, Bartlett and MUSIC method was estimation 3 targets signal, and proposed method estimated 4 targets. We showed the superior performance of the proposed algorithm relative to the classical method in order to estimate of target signals.

  • This paper suggests a numerical method of finding optimal geometric path and minimum-time motion for a manipulator arm. To find the minimum-time motion, the optimal geometric path is searched first, and the minimum-time motion is searched on this optimal path. In the algorithm finding optimal geometric path, the objective function is minimizing the combination of joint velocities, joint-jerks, and actuator forces as well as avoiding several static obstacles, where global search is performed by adjusting the seed points of the obstacle models. In the minimum-time algorithm, the traveling time is expressed by the linear combinations of finite-term quintic B-splines and the coefficients of the splines are obtained by nonlinear programming to minimize the total traveling time subject to the constraints of the velocity-dependent actuator forces. These two search algorithms are basically similar and their convergences are quite stable.

  • In this study, principal component analysis methods using Lasso penalty are introduced. There are two popular methods that apply Lasso penalty to principal component analysis. The first method is to find an optimal vector of linear combination as the regression coefficient vector of regressing for each principal component on the original data matrix with Lasso penalty (elastic net penalty in general). The second method is to find an optimal vector of linear combination by minimizing the residual matrix obtained from approximating the original matrix by the singular value decomposition with Lasso penalty. In this study, we have reviewed two methods of principal components using Lasso penalty in detail, and shown that these methods have an advantage especially in applying to data sets that have more variables than cases. Also, these methods are compared in an application to a real data set using R program. More specifically, these methods are applied to the crime data in Ahamad (1967), which has more variables than cases.

  • The SA filters encompass a large class of filters based on order statistics as well as linear FIR filters. The class of SA filters is defined as a multi-stage filters whose output is linear combination of nonlinear(minimum, maximum, exclusive-OR) sub-filter outputs. According to the lust stage nonlinear sub-filters, SA filters are called SAMAX, SAMIN, and SAXOR filters. In this paper, optimal SAMAX and SAMED filters are designed for images corrupted by biased noise. The performance analysis of this experiment shows that SAMAX filters outperforms SAMED filters for biased noise. In the case of un-biased noise, the SAMAX and SAMED filters give the same performance. This result leads us to a new guideline in the application of SA filters.

  • Optimal design of raft-pile foundations is examined by combining finite element technique and the optimization approach. The piles and soil medium are modeled by three dimensional solid elements while the raft is modelled by shell elements. Drucker-Prager criterion is adopted for the soil medium while the raft and the piles are assumed to be linear elastic. For the optimization process, the approximate semi-analytical method is used for calculating constraint sensitivities and a constraint approximation method which is a combination of the extended Bi-point approximation and Lagrangian polynomial approximation is used for predicting the behaviour of the constraints. The objective function of the problem is the volume of materials of the foundation while the design variables are raft thickness, pile length and pile spacing. The generalized reduced gradient algorithm is chosen for solving the optimization process. It is demonstrated that the method proposed in this study is promising for obtaining optimal design of raft-pile foundations without carrying out a large number of analyses. The results are also compared with those obtained from the previous study in which linear analysis was carried out.

  • Ship Autopilots are usually designed based on the PD and Pill controllers because of simplicity, reliability and easy to construct. However their performance in various environmental conditions is not as good as desired. This disadvantage can be overcome by adjusting works or constructing adaptive controllers. But those methods are complex and not easy to do. This paper presents a new method for constructing a Ship Autopilot based on the combination of Fuzzy Logic Control (FLC) and Linear Control Theory (Pill control). The new Ship Autopilot has the advantages of both the Pill and FLC control methodologies: easy to construct, and optimal control laws can be established based on ship masters' knowledge. Therefore, the new ship autopilot can be well adapted with parameter variations and strong environment effects. Simulation using MATLAB software for a ship with real parameters shows high effectiveness of the Fuzzy Pill autopilot in course keeping and course changing manoeuvres in comparison with the ordinary Pill ship autopilots.

  • The interaction of monochromatic incident waves with a submerged horizontal porous membrane is investigated in the context of two-dimensional linear hydro-elastic theory. It is assumed that the membrane is made of material with very fine pores so that the normal velocity of the fluid passing through the porous membrane is linearly proportional to the pressure difference between two sides of the membrane (e.g. Darcy's law). Using the Eigen-function expansion method, the wave-blocking performance of a submerged horizontal porous membrane is tested with various membrane tensions, porosities, lengths, and submerged depths. It is found that an optimal combination of design parameters exists for given water depth and wave characteristics.

  • The water distribution system problem consists of finding a minimum cost system design subject to hydraulic and operation constraints. The design of new branching network in a paddy irrigation system is presented here. The program based on the linear programming formulation is aimed at finding the optimal economical combination of two main factors: the capital cost of pipe network and the energy cost. Two loading conditions and booster pumps for design of pipe network are considered to obtain the least cost design.

  • The optimum design problem of a coat-hanger die is solved by the inverse formulation. The flow in the die is analyzed using three-dimensional model. The new model for the manifold geometry is developed for the inverse formulation. The inverse problem for the optimum die geometry is formed as the optimization problem whose objective function is the linear combination of the square sum of pressure gradient deviation at die exit and the penalty function relating to the measure of non-smoothness of solution. From the several iterative solutions of the optimization problem, the optimum solution can be obtained automatically while producing the uniform flow rate distribution at die exit.
