Coordinate estimation is an essential function for autonomous navigation of a mobile robot. The optical mouse sensor is convenient and cost-effective for the coordinate estimation problem. It is possible to overcome the position estimation error caused by the slip and the model mismatch of robot's motion equation using the optical mouse sensor. One of the simple methods for the position estimation using the optical mouse sensor is integration of the velocity data from the sensor with time. However, the unavoidable noise in the sensor data may deteriorate the position estimation in case of the simple integration method. In general, a mobile robot has ready-to-use motion information from the encoder sensors of driving motors. By combining the velocity data from the optical mouse sensor and the motion information of a mobile robot, it is possible to improve the coordinate estimation performance. In this paper, a coordinate estimation algorithm for an autonomous mobile robot is presented based on the well-known Kalman filter that is useful to combine the different types of sensors. Computer simulation results show the performance of the proposed localization algorithm for several types of trajectories in comparison with the simple integration method.

This paper presents the robust mobile robot localization method exploiting redundant motion information acquired from three optical mice that are installed at the bottom of a mobile robot in a regular triangular form. First, we briefly introduce a low-cost optical motion sensor, HDNS-2000, and a commercial device driver development tools, WinDriver, to be used in this research. Second, we explain the basic principle of the mobile robot localization using the motion information from three optical mice, and propose the least squares based localization algorithm which is robust to the noisy measurement and partial malfunctioning of optical mice. Third, we describe the development of the experimental optical odometer using three PC optical mice and the user-friendly graphic monitoring program. Fourth, simulations and experiments are performed to demonstrate the validity of the proposed localization method and the operation of the developed optical odometer. Finally, along with the conclusion, we suggest some future work including the installation parameter calibration, the optical mouse remodelling, and the high-performance motion sensor adoption.
Fiber-optic evanescent wave sensor was designed and fabricated to detect mouse immunoglobulin G(IgG) with decladed optical fiber on which anti-mouse IgG was immobilized. A sensitivity obtained by any direct or competitive method was lower than $1\;{\mu}g/m{\ell}$. Anti-mouse IgG was immobilized on 93.9% of core surface of optical fiber by simple adsorption method. The effect of postcoating using bovine serum albumin to remove non-specific binding was not observed. As the ratio of fluorescein to mouse IgG increased, the fluorescence signal increased, but that increase showed no linear relationship. Our fiber-optic sensor system could be used as immunosensor by measuring evanescent fluorescence in antigen-antibody reaction with good sensitivity below $1{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ level.
We proposed the device to control a computer with only a head and eye blinks so that disabilities by car accidents can use a computer. Because they have paralysis of their upper extremities such as C4~C5 paraplegics and cerebral palsy, they cannot efficiently access a general keyboard/mouse not using hands and foots. The cursor position was estimated from a gyro-sensor which can measure head movements, and the mouse event such as click/double click from opto-sensors which can detect eye blinks. The sensor was put on the proper goggle in order not to disturb the visual field. The performance of the proposed device was compared to a general optical mouse, and was used both relative and absolute coordinate in cursor positioning control. The recognition rate of click and double-click was 86% of the optical mouse, the speed of cursor movement by the proposed device was not much different from the mouse. The overall accuracy was 80%. Especially, the relative coordinate is more convenience and accuracy than the absolute coordinate, and can reduce the frequency of reset to prevent the accumulative error.

Recently, various types of camera mouse are developed using the image processing. The camera mouse showed limited performance compared to the traditional optical mouse in terms of the response time and the usability. These problems are caused by the mismatch between the size of the monitor and that of the active pixel area of the CMOS Image Sensor. To overcome these limitations, we designed a new input device that uses the face recognition as well as the speech recognition simultaneously. In the proposed system, the area of the monitor is partitioned into 'n' zones. The face recognition is performed using the web-camera, so that the mouse pointer follows the movement of the face of the user in a particular zone. The user can switch the zone by speaking the name of the zone. The multimodal mouse is analyzed using the Keystroke Level Model and the initial experiments was performed to evaluate the feasibility and the performance of the proposed system.

We proposed the device to control a computer mouse with only head movements and eye blinks so that disabilities by car or other accidents can use a computer. The mouse position were estimated from a gyro-sensor which can measure head movements, and the mouse events such as click/double click were from opto sensors which can detect the eyes flicker, respectively. The sensor was mounted on the goggle in order not to disturb the visual field. There was no difference in movement speed between ours and a general mouse, but it required 3$\sim$4 more times in the result of the experiment to evaluate spatial movements and events detection of the proposed mouse because of the low accuracy. We could eliminate cumbersome work to periodically remove the accumulated error and intuitively control the mouse using non-linear relative point method with dead zones. Optical sensors are used in the event detection circuitry designed to remove the influence of the ambient light changes, therefore it was not affected in the change of external light source.

In this study, the contactless measurement method with a optical displacement sensor(ODS, ADNS 9500) was proposed to overcome flaws in a rotary encoder based measurement under particular circumstances, such as a slippage and a case of little rotational inertia. The performance tests of the optical displacement sensor using data acquisition board and National Instruments's LabVIEW program were performed to accomplish accurate displacement measurements and the performance characteristics according to measurement direction, speed, acceleration, height and surface types were discovered through the repetitive tests. The experimental results indicate that, in order to get an accurate in-plane motion, the height(distance between the ODS and the target surface) has to be maintained at the range of 2.4 mm to 3.2 mm and the sensitivity(resolution) should be modified and applied to the formulae for displacement calculation, considering its measurement direction, speed and surface type.

A wall flow sensor has been used for feedback flow control and wall shear stress measurement. In this study, we developed a new wall flow sensor by combining the PIV algorithm and the micro image sensor used in an optical mouse. The feasibility of the wall flow sensor was investigated by using simulated fluid flow experiments. Compared with the quadrature signal from imaging devices, the accuracy of the wall flow velocity measurement was improved and the dynamic range increased. In addition, the depth information of particles was also measured by using the defocusing imaging technique.

In this paper we introduce a commercial interactive whiteboard (IWB) system named ImSensorTouch by ImSensor Inc. Using this interface system, we can control our computer through the interactive whiteboard screen just by touching it with your finger or a pen. The interface interacts with Windows operating system (OS) and is adaptable to changes of surroundings especially temperature, and illumination condition. The proposed system calculates the difference between a reference image and a current image captured by a camera in the optical receptive field. And the position making the difference is used to generate the position on Windows screen. Then, we send a mouse event on the position to Windows OS. We have implemented the system using a critical section(CS) with two threads for the reference frame update process in which an adaptive thresholding technique is periodically exploited to get reliable result. We expect the system is competitive and promises a bright future in the IWB market.
