  • Recently, injection molding process became more popular than ever to produce large quantities of high precision products or optical products. Injection molding products can cause sensorial problems because of high birefringence or deformation from the residual stresses in the optical media. In the present study, we have focussed on the effect of holding and compression pressures on the optical anisotropy remaining in the MOD by examining the gapwise distribution of birefringence and extinction angle The effect of holding pressure was found to form the inner two birefringence peaks. But the effect of compression pressure on the birefringence distribution was found to make the uniform distribution near the center in the gap-wise direction. Finally, the value of the birefringence near the wall decreased as the mold temperature increased.

  • In this paper, by using a dual frequency liquid crystal material, we propose a liquid crystal device with a fast response characteristics. The dual frequency liquid crystal material has a positive dielectric anisotropy value at a low frequency. With a high frequency, the dielectric anisotropy becomes negative. Therefore, the relaxation process is governed by not only the elastic deformation, but also the dielectric interaction. The measured decay time and rise time were 0.88 ms and 0.33 ms, respectively.

  • LTPS technology based on SLS Crystallization was intensively reviewed. LTPS structure produced by SLS crystallization is composed of much larger grains compared with conventional ELA crystallization structure, which can give higher TFT performances. However, TFT performance uniformity and anisotropy problem should be solved for it to be used in mass production. TFT performance uniformity was from main grain boundary position and could be solved by equal defect area structure $(EDAS^{TM})$. TFT performance anisotropy could be also solved by multi-channel (MC) structure that can make parallel component in perpendicular channel direction. The higher TFT performances from SLS technology can make superior optical and/or electrical properties and has been adopted in mass production successfully.

  • Homogeneously aligned nematic liquid crystal displays (LCDs) driven by in-plane or fringe field were known to exhibit wide viewing angle and appeared to be black in the off state. However, the existence of spacers inside the cell causes the deformation of the liquid crystal molecules. Such a deformation of the liquid crystal causes light-leakage in the dark state, which lowers contrast ratio of the display. We found that the light-leakage due to deformation of the LC director near the spacer mainly depends on the dielectric anisotropy and the ratio of elastic constants of the LC. In this paper, the mechanism on deformation of the LC near spacer is investigated by optical polarizing microscopy.

  • In this study, we have investigated the photoinduced birefringence of Ag plarized-photodoping in double-layer of Ag doped chalcognide thin films and dependence of polarization states in chalcogenide thin films. Also, we have investigated the polarization dependence of photoinduced birefringence and the anisotropy of absorption in an amorphous As$\sub$40/Ge$\sub$10/Se$\sub$15/S$\sub$35/ chalcogenide thin films using two 632.8nm He-Ne lasers, which have a smaller energy than the optical energy gap (E$\sub$OP/) of the film, i.e., an exposure of sub-bandgap light (hν$\sub$op/). The photoinduced phenomena of Ag polarized-photodooping increasing the linear dichroism(d), about 84% and birefringence(Δn), about 23%. It will offer lots of information for the photodoping mechanism and analysis of chalcogenide thin films.

  • In this study, we used Brewster-Angle Microscope(BAM) to study on the molecular orientation of monolayer on the water surface. The behaviors of molecules on three different subphase have been observed. Reproducible $\pi$-A isotherm have been obtained only on information about phase transition by molecular area. BAM facilitates the observation of morphology by optical anisotropy and thickness in monolayer and multilayers as BAM is shown to be sensitive to anisotropy of film. Every transition was found by BAM technique, either as a dramatic change in degree of contrast or as a sudden alteration of molecular action and $\pi$-A isotherm.

  • An approach to achieving of spatially homogeneous, ordered ensemble of semiconductor quantum rods in polymer film of polyvinyl butyral is reported. The CdSe/ZnS quantum rods are embedded to the polymer film. Obtained film is stretched up to four times to its initial length. A concentration of quantum rods in the samples is around $2{\times}10^{-5}$ M. The absorption spectra, obtained in the light with orthogonal polarization, confirm the occurrence of spatial ordering in a quantum rod ensemble. Anisotropy of the optical properties in the ordered quantum rod ensemble is examined. The presented method can be used as a low-cost solution for preparing the nanostructured materials with anisotropic properties and high concentration of nanocrystals.

  • We synthesized the simple triethoxysilanes (SGDR1) bearing a disperse red 1 for thin film fabrication. The thin films were prepared using the solution of SGDR1 after hydrolysis and condensation. The films were annealed at two different temperatures such as $150^{\circ}C$ and $200^{\circ}C$. Trans-to-cis photoisomerization was observed under the exposure of 532 nm light with UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy. The kinetic study of photoisomerization was performed in the film. Reorientation of the polar azobenzene molecules induced optical anisotropy under a linearly polarized light at 532 nm. The effect of aggregation of the chromophores and annealing of the silicon oxide in the matrix were studied on the dynamic properties of isomerization and induced birefringence.

  • The birefringence of distributed, uniaxially anisotropic molecules like liquid crystals is calculated as the degree of ordering is varied. The relation between the normalized birefringence ${\Delta}n_{rel}$ and the orientational order parameter S is investigated. The distribution function, which enables one to monitor the degree of ordering of liquid crystals including randomly distributed ones, is introduced. Using this distribution function, a series of distributed liquid crystals with order parameters ranging from 0 to 1 are generated, and ${\Delta}n_{rel}$ and S of the correspondingly distributed liquid crystals are calculated. Based on the calculated data, it is revealed that ${\Delta}n_{rel}$ and S satisfy the quasi-linear relation of $S=(1+a){\Delta}n_{rel}-a{\Delta}n^2_{rel}$, where a can be approximated as $n_o{\frac{{\Delta}n}{4}}$. The anisotropy of molecular polarizability is also calculated, using the birefringence, and separately following Vuks' method and Neugebauer's method, and it is shown that the relations between S and the molecular-polarizability anisotropy are also quasi-linear.

  • Co/Pd multilayer systems have been investigated with much attention for a long time due to the high and easily controllable perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. Two [Pd(1)/Co(0.4 nm)]5 multilayer systems - one is as-deposit, and the other is annealed at $350^{\circ}C$ - are studied with an all-optical approach. A two-color optical pump probe setup using 30 fs laser pulse at 82 MHz repetition rate is used to measure the time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr signal. It turns out the heat treatment enhances the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, and leads to faster magnetization precession. The frequency reaches 30 GHz in the annealed sample, which is a factor of 2 larger compared to the as-deposit film.
