In a computational fluid dynamics, the imposition of open boundary condition has an important part of the accuracy but it is not easy to find the optimal boundary rendition. This difficult is introduced by making artificial boundary in unbounded domairs. Such open boundary requires us to ensure the continuity of all primitive variables because the nature is in continuum. Here we introduce a revised well-conditioned open boundary condition particularly in FEM and apply it to various problems-entrainment, body force, short domains.
Numerical simulation of coextrusion process of viscoelastic fluids within a die has been carried out. In the coextrusion process velocity profile at the outflow boundary is not known a priori, which makes it difficult to impose the proper boundary condition at the outflow boundary. This difficulty has been avoided by using the open boundary condition (OBC) method. In this study, elastic viscous stress splitting (EVSS) formulation with streamline upwind (SU) method has been used in the finite element method. In order to test the validity of the OBC method, comparison between the results of fully developed condition at the outlet and those of OBC has been made for a Newtonian fluid. In the case of upper convected Maxwell (UCM) fluid, the effect of outflow boundary condition on the interface position has been investigated by using two meshes having different downstream lengths. In both cases, the results with the OBC method showed reasonable interface shape. In particular, for the UCM fluid the interface shape calculated with OBC was independent of the downstream length, while the results with the zero traction condition showed oscillation of interface position close to the outlet. Viscosity difference was found to be more important than elasticity difference in determining the final interface position. However, the overshoot of interface position near the con-fluent point increased with elasticity.

Most of parabolic approximation models employ a relatively limited open boundary condition in which there is no depth variation in the longshore direction outside of the computation domain so that Snell's law may be presumed to hold. Existing Kirby's condition belongs to this category and in the paper both modified Kirby's method and Dirichlet boundary condition are presented in detail and numerical results of three methods were shown. Judging from computation to wave propagations over a circular shoal in a constant depth, the method based on present Dirichlet boundary condition with fictitious numerical adjusting regions in both sides of the computation domain gives the least distorted amplitude ratio distribution.

This paper deals with the treatment of the open boundary in two-dimensional free-surface wave problems. Two numerical schemes are investigated for the implementation of the open boundary condition. One is to add the artificial damping term to the dynamic free-surface boundary condition, in which the determination of suitable damping coefficient and the damping zone is the most important. The other is a modified Orlanski's method, which is known to be very useful for the uni-directional waves. Using these two schemes, numerical tests have been conducted for a few typical free-surface wave problems. To obtain the numerical solution of the free-surface boundary value problem, the fundamental source-distribution method is used and the fully nonlinear free-surface boundary conditions are applied. The computed results are presented in comparison with those of others for the proof of practicality of these two schemes.

This paper deals with the open boundary problems, and two numerical schemes are used for the implementation of open boundary condition. One is to add the artificial damping term to dynamic free-surface boundary condition. Determination of suitable damping coefficient and the damping cone is the most important in this scheme. The other scheme is a modified Orlanski's method. This will be useful for the problems with unidirectional waves. A few typical free-surface wave problems are modeled for the numerical test. Method of solution is fundamental source-distribution method and the fully nonlinear boundary conditions are applied. The computed results are compared with those of others for the proof of practicality of these schemes.
This paper describes a method developed for the simulation of ring pack lubrication characteristic in an internal combustion engine. In general, the quantity of oil supply for piston ring lubrication may be insufficient in filling the entire volume formed at the interference between the piston ring and the cylinder liner. Thus the oil starvation condition should be considered in analyzing piston ring lubrication. In order to reasonably estimate the amount of oil left over on the cylinder liner, the flow rate at the posterior portion of the interface should be calculated with an adequate boundary condition that confirms flow continuity condition. In this analysis, oil starvation and open-end boundary conditions are considered at the inlet and outlet of the piston rings. The lubrication characteristic of each piston ring is obtained by an iterative method with sequential steps. It is revealed that piston rings are operated under oil starvation in most operating cycles and the result under these conditions are quite different from that with the fully-flooded assumption.

Parabolic approximation and sponge layer are applied as open boundary condition for elliptic finite difference wave model. Generalized conjugate gradient method is used as a solution procedure. Using parabolic approximation a large part of spurious reflection is removed at the spherical shoal experiment and sponge layer boundary condition needs more than 2 wave lengths of sponge layer to give similar results. Simulating the propagation of waves on a rectangular harbor, it is identified that iterative scheme can be applied easily for the non-rectangular computational region.
The nonlinear fourth order elliptic equations with jumping nonlinearity was modeled by McKenna. We investigate the trends for the researches of the existence of solutions of a fourth order semilinear elliptic boundary value problem with Dirichlet boundary Condition, ${\Delta}^2u{+}c{\Delta}u=b_1[(u+1)^{-}1]{+}b_2u^+$ in ${\Omega}$, where ${\Omega}$ is a bounded open set in $R^N$ with smooth boundary ${\partial}{\Omega}$.
This paper presents how redevelopment of the boundary layer in a backward-facing step flow is affected by boundary conditions imposed on velocity at the inlet, top and exit of the flow. A two-dimensional, laminar, incompressible flow over a backward-facing step with an open top boundary has been computed by using numerical methods of second-order time and spatial accuracy and a fractional-step method that guarantees a divergence-free velocity field at all time. The inlet velocity profile above the step is of Blasius type. Along the top boundary, shear-tree and Dirichlet conditions on the streamwise velocity were considered and at the exit fully-developed and convective boundary conditions were examined. (The vertical velocity at all boundaries were assumed to be zero explicitly or implicitly.) From the computed flow fields, the reattachment on the bottom side of shear layer separated from the tip of the step and succeeding redevelopment of the boundary layer were investigated.

The objective of this study is to enhance the reliability of the computed results by setting up of an improved treatments onto the open boundary condition for tidal motion in finite domain. By the $L^2-norm$ and RMS error tests, it was revealed that Sommerfeld's radiating condition gives better result than a forced boundary condition. In the numerical tests for a long wave in a simplified rectangular bay, it was found that the computational accuracy of the newly improved technique to the Sommerfeld condition, suggested in this study with the 2 dimensional shallow finite element model, could be improved by 30% of RMS error to the existing Sommerfeld condition.
