Detecting DNA hydroxymethylation: exploring its role in genome regulation

  • DNA methylation is one of the most extensively studied epigenetic regulatory mechanisms, known to play crucial roles in various organisms. It has been implicated in the regulation of gene expression and chromatin changes, ranging from global alterations during cell state transitions to locus-specific modifications. 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (5hmC) is produced by a major oxidation, from 5-methylcytosine (5mC), catalyzed by the ten-eleven translocation (TET) enzymes, and is gradually being recognized for its significant role in genome regulation. With the development of state-of-the-art experimental techniques, it has become possible to detect and distinguish 5mC and 5hmC at base resolution. Various techniques have evolved, encompassing chemical and enzymatic approaches, as well as third-generation sequencing techniques. These advancements have paved the way for a thorough exploration of the role of 5hmC across a diverse array of cell types, from embryonic stem cells (ESCs) to various differentiated cells. This review aims to comprehensively report on recent techniques and discuss the emerging roles of 5hmC.

A simple panel zone model for linear analysis of steel moment frames

  • Consideration of the panel zone (PZ) deformations in the analysis of steel moment frames (SMFs) has a substantial effect on structural response. One way to include the PZ effect on the structural response is Krawinkler's PZ model, which is one of the best and conventional models. However, modeling of Krawinkler's PZ model has its complexity, and finding an alternative procedure for PZ modeling is of interest. In this study, an efficient model is proposed to simplify Krawinkler's PZ model into an Adjusted Rigid-End Zone (AREZ). In this way, the rigid-end-zone dimensions of the beam and column elements are defined through an appropriate rigid-end-zone factor. The dimensions of this region depend on the PZ stiffness, beam(s) and columns' specifications, and connection joint configuration. Thus, to obtain a relationship for the AREZ model, which yields the dimensions of the rigid-end zone, the story drift of an SMF with Krawinkler's PZ model is equalized with the story drift of the same structure with the AREZ model. Then, the degree of accuracy of the resulting relationship is examined in several connections of generic SMFs. Also, in order to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed model in SMFs, several SMFs ranging from 3- to 30-story representing low- to high-rise buildings are examined through linear static and dynamic time history analysis. Furthermore, non-linear dynamic analyses of three SMFs conducted to validate the degree of accuracy of the proposed model in the non-linear analysis of SMFs. Analytical results show that there is considerable conformity between inter-story drift ratio (IDR) results of the SMFs with Krawinkler's PZ model and those of the centerline SMFs with AREZ.

Effects of Vagus Nerve Stimulation on Adults and Children with Refractory Epilepsy (소아와 성인의 난치성 간질 환자에서 미주신경 자극술의 효과)

  • Vagal nerve stimulation (VNS) has been proposed as a possible way to improve the control of refractory epilepsy. We report the effects following VNS treatment in patients with refractory epilepsy. Seventeen patients with a mean age of 12.8 years, ranging from 5 to 29 years, underwent the implantation of vagal nerve stimulation (Cyberonics, Houston, TX). We reviewed the clinical findings before and after VNS in seizure frequency, number of antiepileptic drugs (AED), and quality of life (QOL). All of the patients had intractable seizures, eleven of the patients had additional medical complications, three had hippocampus atrophy, one had encephalomalacia, five had encephalitis, one had pachygyria, and one had schizencephaly. Thirteen patients had symptomatic partial epilepsies, three patients had Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and one had cryptogenic partial epilepsy. The mean follow up duration was 35 months. The mean reduction of seizure frequency compared with baseline before VNS was 26.1% after 3 months (p<0.005), 41.9% after 6 months (p<0.001), 46.9% after 1 year (p<0.001), and 53% at the latest follow-up (p<0.001). Twelve patients showed an improvement of QOL such as mood, language, alertness, expression, and motor function. The most common side effects were transient hoarseness or voice change or cough, which was detected in six patients (35%) and wound infection in one patient (5%). This study has shown a good anti-seizure effect of VNS, decrease in seizure frequency and improvements in QOL. We concluded that VNS is a beneficial therapy in refractory epilepsy with a non-resectable epileptic focus. Further studies should be focused on the prediction of unresponsiveness and the adjustment of VNS parameters for maximum efficacy in patients with various medical histories.

  • This paper presents a method and necessity of this research to study the gosijo Anthology compilation method. The cataloging work was carried out 53 species of gosijo Anthology ranging from 1910-2000's, in order to proceed with the study. There was no way to analyze the compilation of all gosijo Anthology ranging from 53 species in this article. For this reason, select the classic gosijos(模範의 古時調) of Anhwak(安廓) conducted a study gosijo Anthology compilation method. The classic gosijos(模範의 古時調) of Anhwak(安廓) are no new works, will be named as one of the subheadings of the magazine. But not less that 100 can work with and all the works reveal the artist. It also select a topic classification scheme. This point is analyzed with focus on the text to be responsible enough to think that the role of gosijo Anthology. The classic gosijos(模範의 古時調) is thought to have great significance in a few aspects. First, the gosijo The Anthology is only pyeongsijo(平時調) and can be called only sijojip which the artist recorded all the work. Second, the work presented in this gosijo Anthology are the popular songs contained in a number of Gagip(歌集) majority. Third, there is a new artist appears gosijo Anthology does not appear as a writer in the gosijosa(古時調史). They BakDaegil(朴大吉), ChoiSeobung(崔瑞鵬), OhHuisang(吳喜常), JangWooByouk(張友璧), AnSapil(安思弼), AnYungi(安胤基). Fourth, gosijo Anthology reveals the Woodae gagaek(歌客) locality and the foundation of JoSeon(朝鮮) gagok(歌曲).

The Effect of Static Balance on Colors and Music Tempo Stimulation for Normal Children (색과 음악 빠르기 자극이 정상 아동의 정적 균형에 미치는 영향)

  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of sensory stimulation for static balance on normal children. Sensory input was consisted of colors, and music tempo stimulation. Methods : Participants were consisted of 20 normal kindergarten children ranging in age from six to seven years. The static balance was tested by a BPM(Balance Performance Monitor). In this study one-way ANOVA was used and the statistical significance level of results was determined at 0.05. Results : 1. According to color stimulation, there was no significant difference in static balance among red, yellow, green(p>0.05). 2. According to music tempo stimulation, there was no significant difference in static balance, among the high music tempo and low music tempo children in a general environment(p>0.05). 3. However, both green color and low music tempo stimulation have a little effect on static balance on normal children. Conclusion : These results indicate the possibility that the application method of green color and low music tempo stimulation may help in the improvement of static balance for the disabled children. This study will be used as the foundational data of therapeutic environment for the disabled children.

Gravity Estimation by Using Low-Low Inter-Satellite Tracking Data (저궤도 위성간 추적데이터를 이용한 지구중력장 측정)

  • Accurate estimation of the Earth gravity field plays an important role in understanding the Earth geodynamic activities. After brief discussion on the objective of the gravity estimation, dedicated satellite missions for this purpose are described. Recently launched NASA/DLR Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) mission, which consists of two co-orbiting low altitude satellites, is described. For the performance analysis, full numerical simulation was performed. The simulation procedure and its key instrument modelings are described. From the simulation results, a significant improvement on the Earth gravity field accuracy is expected.

  • An amperometric ascorbic acid selective sensor utilizing the transfer reaction of proton liberated from the dissociation of ascorbic acid in aqueous solution across an elliptic micro-hole water/organic gel interface is demonstrated. This redox inactive sensing platform offers an alternative way for the detection of ascorbic acid to avoid a fouling effect which is one of the major concerns in redox based sensing systems. The detection principle is simply measuring the current change with respect to the assisted transfer of protons by a proton selective ionophore (e.g., ETH 1778) across the micro-hole interface between the water and the polyvinylchloride-2-nitrophenyloctylether gel phase. The assisted transfer reaction of protons generated from ascorbic acid across the polarized micro-hole interface was first characterized using cyclic voltammetry. An improved sensitivity for the quantitative analysis of ascorbic acid was achieved using differential pulse stripping voltammetry with a linear response ranging from 1 to $100\;{\mu}M$ concentrations of ascorbic acid. As a demonstration, the developed sensor was applied for analyzing the content of vitamin-C in different types of commercial pharmaceutical tablets and syrups, and a satisfactory recovery from these samples were also obtained.

Connection Management Scheme using Mobile Agent System

  • The mobile agent paradigm can be exploited in a variety of ways, ranging from low-level system administration tasks to middle ware to user-level applications. Mobile agents can be useful in building middle-ware services such as active mail systems, distributed collaboration systems, etc. An active mail message is a program that interacts with its recipient using a multimedia interface, and adapts the interaction session based on the recipient's responses. The mobile agent paradigm is well suitable to this type of application, since it can carry a sender-defined session protocol along with the multimedia message. Mobile agent communication is possible via method invocation on virtual references. Agents can make synchronous, one-way, or future-reply type invocations. Multicasting is possible, since agents can be aggregated hierarchically into groups. A simple check-pointing facility has also been implemented. Another proposed solution is to use multi agent computer systems to access, filter, evaluate, and integrate this information. We will present the overall architectural framework, our agent design commitments, and agent architecture to enable the above characteristics. Besides, the each information needed a mobile agent system such as text, graphic, image, audio and video etc, constructed a great capacity multimedia database system. However, they have problems in establishing connections over multiple subnetworks, such as no end-to-end connections, transmission delay due to ATM address resolution, no QoS protocols. We propose a new connection management scheme in the thesis to improve the connection management involved of mobile agent systems.

Fukuoka Next-generation Social System Creation Hub as a Regional Innovation Platform Strategy

  • The purpose of this article is to introduce and describe the case of Fukuoka Next-generation Social System Creation Hub based on the conceptual framework of regional innovation platform strategy. In short, it is a "government-issued" regional innovation platform strategy to improve innovativeness with limited creative capital through "borrowing" not money but network, wisdom, know-how, and ideas from each other between some stakeholder groups in a region. The Fukuoka Industry, Science & Technology Foundation, which is the coordinating institution of the whole program, plays the role of a platformer to unify various projects into the program crossing borders between stakeholder groups for building regional innovation platforms that lends intensive support to feedback loops between the program facilitator and its partners in the program. Thanks to being a government-issued one, it could be tied together with some wide ranging issues of policy on social innovations, such as the "low carbon society" or the "health and longevity society." But at the same time, it is a concern that many regional research institutions that have innovative potential and diverse ideas become governed by the platform without their noticing it and dealt with in the same way based on "selected" and "designated" strategic goals. Therefore, it seems that a regional innovation platform strategy is a kind of "double-edged sword" in public policy in the era of "panopticism of bureaucratic society" in Japan.

Orbit Determination of GEO-KOMPSAT-2A Geostationary Satellite (천리안위성 2A호 지구정지궤도위성 궤도결정)

  • The GEO-KOMPSAT-2A (GK2A) satellite, which was launched in December 2018, carries weather observation payloads and uses the image navigation and registration system to calibrate the observation images. The calibration system requires accurate orbit prediction data and depends on the accuracy of the orbit determination accuracy. In order to find a possible way to improve the current orbit determination accuracy of the GK2A flight dynamic subsystem module, orbit determination software was developed to independently evaluate the orbit determination accuracy. A comprehensive satellite dynamic model is applied for a batch-type least squares filter. When determining the orbit, thrust firing during station-keeping maneuvers and wheel-off loading maneuvers is taken into account. One month of GK2A ranging data were processed to estimate the satellite position on a daily basis. The orbit determination error was evaluated by comparing estimates during overlapping estimation intervals.
