Exploitation of the ocean's deep water has brought humanity a wealth of treasures for centuries. Even so, it can confidently be forecast that the Ocean will be far more important to future generations than it has ever been in the past. Although many researchers endeavor to explore oceans, the ocean holds the crucial elements for maintaining a growing industrialized population in search of raw materials. This requires careful study and selection of innovations that will provide future generations and raw materials with an unlimited renewable and non-pollution energy and raw materials source with advantageous side benefits.

Impacts of Sea Surface Temperature (SST) assimilation to the prediction of upper ocean temperature is investigated by using a regional ocean forecasting system, in which 3-dimensional optimal interpolation is applied. In the present study, Sea Surface Temperature and Sea Ice Analysis (OSTIA) dataset is adopted for the daily SST assimilation. This study mainly compares two experimental results with (Exp. DA) and without data assimilation (Exp. NoDA). When comparing both results with OSTIA SST data during Sept. 2011, Exp. NoDA shows Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of about $1.5^{\circ}C$ at 24, 48, 72 forecast hour. On the other hand, Exp. DA yields the relatively lower RMSE of below $0.8^{\circ}C$ at all forecast hour. In particular, RMSE from Exp. DA reaches $0.57^{\circ}C$ at 24 forecast hour, indicating that the assimilation of daily SST (i.e., OSTIA) improves the performance in the early SST prediction. Furthermore, reduction ratio of RMSE in the Exp. DA reaches over 60% in the Yellow and East seas. In order to examine impacts in the shallow costal region, the SST measured by eight moored buoys around Korean peninsula is compared with both experiments. Exp. DA reveals reduction ratio of RMSE over 70% in all season except for summer, showing the contribution of OSTIA assimilation to the short-range prediction in the coastal region. In addition, the effect of SST assimilation in the upper ocean temperature is examined by the comparison with Argo data in the East Sea. The comparison shows that RMSE from Exp. DA is reduced by $1.5^{\circ}C$ up to 100 m depth in winter where vertical mixing is strong. Thus, SST assimilation is found to be efficient also in the upper ocean prediction. However, the temperature below the mixed layer in winter reveals larger difference in Exp. DA, implying that SST assimilation has still a limitation to the prediction of ocean interior.

In general, forecast tsunami heights announced for tsunami warning are computed by using a linear tsunami model with coarse grids which leads the underestimation of inundation area. Thus, an accurate tsunami inundation map corresponding the forecast tsunami height is needed for an emergency evacuation plan. A practical way to construct a relatively accurate tsunami inundation map was proposed in this study for the quantitative forecast of inundation area. This procedure can be introduced as in the followings: The fault dislocations of potential tsunami sources generating a specific tsunami height near an interested area are found by using a linear tsunami model. Based on these fault dislocations, maximum inundation envelops of the interested area are computed and illustrated by using nonlinear inundation numerical model. In this study, the tsunami inundation map for Imwon area was constructed according to 11 potential tsunami sources, and the validity of this process was examined.
The dynamical model forecasts using state-of-art general circulation models (GCMs) have some limitations to simulate the real climate system since they do not depend on the past history. One of the alternative methods to correct model errors is to use the canonical correlation analysis (CCA) correction method. CCA forecasts at the present time show better skill than dynamical model forecasts especially over the midlatitudes. Model outputs are adjusted based on the CCA modes between the model forecasts and the observations. This study builds a canonical correlation prediction model for subseasonal (June) precipitation. The predictors are circulation fields over western North Pacific from the Global Seasonal Forecasting System version 5 (GloSea5) and observed snow cover extent over Eurasia continent from Climate Data Record (CDR). The former is based on simultaneous teleconnection between the western North Pacific and the East Asia, and the latter on lagged teleconnection between the Eurasia continent and the East Asia. In addition, we suggest a technique for improving forecast skill by applying the ensemble canonical correlation (ECC) to individual canonical correlation predictions.

Recently, many companies offer various web-based map that is based on GIS(Geographic Information System) information. Google Map, Open street, Bing Map, Naver Map, Daum Map, Vwolrd Map, etc are the few examples of such system. In this paper, we propose a method to visualize ocean forecasting model data considering the flow diagram of tidal current, streamline expression algorithm, and user convenience by using vector field data information that is currently being served. It is confirmed that the proposed method of the flow diagram of tidal current, and stream line expression algorithm is faster than that of conventional ocean prediction model data by more than 2 times.
The comparison of prediction errors in geopotential height, temperature, and precipitation forecasts is made quantitatively to evaluate medium-range forecast skills between Global Seasonal Forecasting System version 5 (GloSea5) and Unified Model (UM) in operation by Korea Meteorological Administration during 2014. In addition, the performances in prediction of sea surface temperature anomaly in NINO3.4 region, Madden and Julian Oscillation (MJO) index, and tropical storms in western north Pacific are evaluated. The result of evaluations appears that the forecast skill of UM with lower values of root-mean square error is generally superior to GloSea5 during forecast periods (0 to 12 days). The forecast error tends to increase rapidly in GloSea5 during the first half of the forecast period, and then it shows down so that the skill difference between UM and GloSea5 becomes negligible as the forecast time increases. Precipitation forecast of GloSea5 is not as bad as expected and the skill is comparable to that of UM during 10-day forecasts. Especially, in predictions of sea surface temperature in NINO3.4 region, MJO index, and tropical storms in western Pacific, GloSea5 shows similar or better performance than UM. Throughout comparison of forecast skills for main meteorological elements and weather extremes during medium-range, the effects of initial and model errors in atmosphere-ocean coupled model are verified and it is suggested that GloSea5 is useful system for not only seasonal forecasts but also short- and medium-range forecasts.
This paper focused on forecasting a short-term production of oysters, which have been farmed in Korea, with distinct periodicity of production by year, and different production level by month. To forecast a short-term oyster production, this paper uses monthly data (260 observations) from January 1990 to August 2011, and also adopts several econometrics methods, such as Multiple Regression Analysis Model (MRAM), Seasonal Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (SARIMA) Model, and Vector Error Correction Model (VECM). As a result, first, the amount of short-term oyster production forecasted by the multiple regression analysis model was 1,337 ton with prediction error of 246 ton. Secondly, the amount of oyster production of the SARIMA I and II models was forecasted as 12,423 ton and 12,442 ton with prediction error of 11,404 ton and 11,423 ton, respectively. Thirdly, the amount of oyster production based on the VECM was estimated as 10,425 ton with prediction errors of 9,406 ton. In conclusion, based on Theil inequality coefficient criterion, short-term prediction of oyster by the VECM exhibited a better fit than ones by the SARIMA I and II models and Multiple Regression Analysis Model.

We developed an age-based spawner-recruit model incorporating environmental variables to forecast stock biomass and recruits of pelagic fish in this study. We applied the model to the Tsushima stock of jack mackerel, which is shared by Korea and Japan. The stock biomass of jack mackerel (Trachurus japonicus) around Korean waters ranged from 141 thousand metric tons (mt) and 728 thousand mt and recruits ranged from 27 thousand mt to 283 thousand mt. We hind-casted the stock biomass to evaluate the model performance and robustness for the period of 1987~2009. It was found that the model has been useful to forecast stock biomass and recruits for the period of the lifespan of fish species. The model is also capable of forecasting the long-term period, assuming a certain climatic regime.
The effect of Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit-A (AMSU-A) observations on the short-range forecast in East Asia (EA) was investigated for the Northern Hemispheric (NH) summer and winter months, using the Forecast Sensitivity to Observations (FSO) method. For both periods, the contribution of radiosonde (TEMP) to the EA forecast was largest, followed by AIRCRAFT, AMSU-A, Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI), and the atmospheric motion vector of Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite (COMS) or Multi-functional Transport Satellite (MTSAT). The contribution of AMSU-A sensor was largely originated from the NOAA 19, NOAA 18, and MetOp-A (NOAA 19 and 18) satellites in the NH summer (winter). The contribution of AMSU-A sensor on the MetOp-A (NOAA 18 and 19) satellites was large at 00 and 12 UTC (06 and 18 UTC) analysis times, which was associated with the scanning track of four satellites. The MetOp-A provided the radiance data over the Korea Peninsula in the morning (08:00~11:30 LST), which was important to the morning forecast. In the NH summer, the channel 5 observations on MetOp-A, NOAA 18, 19 along the seaside (along the ridge of the subtropical high) increased (decreased) the forecast error slightly (largely). In the NH winter, the channel 8 observations on NOAA 18 (NOAA 15 and MetOp-A) over the Eastern China (Tibetan Plateau) decreased (increased) the forecast error. The FSO provides useful information on the effect of each AMSU-A sensor on the EA forecasts, which leads guidance to better use of AMSU-A observations for EA regional numerical weather prediction.
