  • We carried out basic research to evaluate covering material for improving and managing contaminated benthic environments in coastal areas. Changes in nutrient concentration such as phosphate, hydrogen sulfide of contaminated sediment, and pH, Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP) were investigated through mesocosm experiments for 6 months by covering contaminated sediment with granulated coal ash. Calcium oxide eluted from the granulated coal ash was confirmed to neutralize acidified sediment by increasing pH through hydrolysis. Also, calcium oxide and silica eluted from the granulated coal ash adsorbed and precipitated with phosphate in the sediment. The concentration of phosphate in the sediment investigated decreased by ca. 84.31 %. Similarly, the concentration of hydrogen sulfide decreased by 133.5 mg/L in one month. The hydrogen sulfide is considered to have reacted with substances such as manganese oxide which were eluted from the granulated coal ash and precipitated. Also, it was concluded that the hydrogen sulfide was reduced since anaerobic conditions in the sediment weakened. According to the results of these mesocosm experiments, granulated coal ash was found to be effective to remediate and manage benthic environments by covering the surface layer of sediment.

  • The aspects of typhoon-induced surges were classified into three types at the Western coast, and their characteristics were examined. The typhoons OLGA (9907) and KOMPASU (1007) were the representative steep types. As they pass close to the coasts with fast translation velocity, the time of maximum surge is unrelated to tidal phase. However, typhoons PRAPIROON (0012) and BOLAVEN (1215) were the representative mild types, which pass at a long distance to the coasts with slow translation velocity, and were characterized by having maximum surge time is near low tide. Meanwhile, typhoons MUIFA (1109) and WINNIE (9713) can be classified into mild types, but they do not show the characteristics of the mild type. Thus they are classified into propagative type, which are propagated from the outside. Analyzing the annual highest high water level data, the highest water level ever had been recorded when the WINNIE (9713) had attacked. At that time, severe astronomical tide condition overlapped modest surge. Therefore, if severe astronomical tide encounter severe surge in the future, tremendous water level may be formed with very small probability. However, considering that most of the huge typhoons are mild type, time of maximum surge tends to occur at low tide. In case of estimating the extreme water level by a numerical simulation, it is necessary not only to apply various tide conditions and accompanying tide-modulated surge, but also to scrutinize typhoon parameters such as translation velocity and so on.

  • Flow velocity changes in the shroud system for tidal current power generation due to experimental flow velocities and blade geometry changes were analyzed by hydraulic experiment and numerical simulation. Through the hydraulic experiment, flow velocities at inlet of shroud system and RPM according to blade geometry were measured, and numerical simulation was used to analyze flow velocity changes in shroud. When the experimental flow velocity was increased by about 28% and the shape of the airfoil was applied, the measured flow velocity at the shroud inlet tended to increase by up to about 56%. On the other hand, when airfoil-shaped blades were installed, the flow velocity at the inlet tended to increase by up to 14% compared to conventional blades, and RPM was also the highest at the same conditions. The hydraulic experiment and numerical simulation results showed an error of about 13%, and the trends of the flow velocity changes in each result are similar. Numerical simulation of the flow velocity changes in the shroud showed that the flow velocity tended to increase 1.7 times at the front of the blade compared to the inlet. The results of the flow velocity change analysis in the shroud system obtained from this study will provide the basic data necessary for the development of efficient shroud system for tidal current power generation.

  • We analyzed the spatio-temporal distribution characteristics of water quality and phytoplankton communities in the Isa Stream systems (ISS) from Sangsa Lake to Suncheon Bay. Sangsa Lake showed relatively oligotrophic and mesotrophic conditions, but the freshwater and mixed brackish water zones showed more severe eutrophication than Sangsa Lake and Suncheon Bay due to the influence of industrial waste such as livestock waste. In terms of the phytoplankton community, the number of phytoplankton species was higher in freshwater and mixed brackish water zones than in Sangsa Lake and Suncheon Bay, but the cell density and Chlorophyll-a concentrations (Chl-a) were relatively high in Sanga Lake and Suncheon Bay. In particular, the mesotrophic species Fragilaria crotonensis and Asterionella formosa showed different dominance in the surface and bottom layers, and the influence of A. formosa was significant in the freshwater and mixed brackish water zones in spring and summer. However, Skeletonema costatum-ls, a eutrophic indicator species, dominated in mixed brackish water zones to seawater in autumn and winter. Thus, the severe eutrophication and rapid environmental changes in the ISS could seriously damage the coastal ecosystem in Suncheon Bay. These ecosystem changes are threatening in terms of conservation and management of the UNESCO Suncheon Biosphere Reserve and Yeoja Bay including Suncheon Bay, which recorded the first Ramsar wetland in Korea. Therefore, further research is needed to establish an in-depth management plan.

  • The high-energy X-ray imaging detector used for container inspection uses a thick scintillator to effectively acquire X-rays. X-ray incident on the scintillator is generally up to 9MeV. Therefore, to effectively collect X-ray, it is necessary to use a thick scintillator. To collect the light generated by the reaction between X-ray and scintillator, an optical-sensor must be combined with the scintillator. In this study, a study on the design conditions of the detector using a CdWO4 and a small sensor is described. To calculate the collected light according to the change of the scintillator thickness and the reflectance of surface, MCNP6 and DETECT2000 were used. As a result of calculating, it was confirmed that when the reflectance of the surface was low, it was appropriate to select a scintillator with a thickness of 15 to 20-mm, but as the reflectance increased, it was confirmed that it was appropriate to select a CdWO4 with a thickness of 25 to 30-mm.

  • As fish communities are sensitive to natural environmental changes as well as anthropogenic pressures, their composition and characteristics help us to assess the aquatic ecosystem health. The fish fauna and the length-weight relationship of Zacco platypus in the Seomjin River system were investigated from July 2018 to May 2019. The collected species during the survey period were 49 species belong to 14 families including 19 Korean endemic and two endangered species. According to Bray-Curtis similarities, 14 sites were divided into four groups based on the fish community composition; two groups(group A, B) and two uncategorized sites(group C, D). There were significant differences between groups A and B(analysis of similarities, R=0.722, p=0.002). A similarity percentage analysis revealed that Z. koreanus(8.55%), Micropterus salmoides(6.90%), and Lepomis macrochirus (4.90%) contributed to these differences of fish assemblages between group A and B. Group A showed higher relative abundances of exotic species such as M. salmoides and L. macrochirus, while Z. platypus and Z. koreanus which are the common species in Korea, were the most dominant species in group B. Based on the length-weight relationship of Z. platypus, b values were varied from 2.82 to 3.80, indicating that growth patterns of the species were spatially different. This study could be served as baseline data for understanding fish fauna, assessing habitat characteristics based on the fauna, and identifying health conditions of Z. platypus in the Seomjin River system.

  • The scissor-type rope cutter is the most widely used amongst all kinds of commercially available rope cutters in Korea. In this study, we performed finite element analysis on the scissor-type rope cutter. We determined the structure of the cutter that would ensure its stable operation in various situations involving rope entanglement, and verified its effectiveness by testing it in the lab and in an actual ship. These investigations revealed that when the propeller shaft was not rotated by rope entanglement, the constant torque generated by the engine resulted in the torsion of the rope cutter and maximum deformation in the lower blade, which was not restricted by finite element analysis. With increasing blade thickness, the maximum values of deformation and equivalent stress decreased, resulting in a rise in the safety factor. At the constant blade thickness, the effect of the torque variations on the maximum equivalent stress and the maximum deformation is independent of the position of the external force of the rope cutter and decreases in direct proportion. The results of this study confirmed that the rope-cutter structure determined by analysis could lead to a hassle-free removal of ropes and fishing nets under all conditions and environments.

  • When oil tankers, large passenger ships and cargo ships sink under the sea owing to various maritime accidents, the residual cargo oil or fuel oil in the such vessels could pose direct risk to factor for the marine environment and it require safe and rapid removal. Although domestic and foreign salvage companies are adopting various recovery methods and technologies with customizations according to each site during recovery operations studies on reasonable assessment modules for the operation process are relatively insufficient. In this study, the data from trapped-oil recovery operations performed at different site conditions were collected and analyzed in order to designed an operation assessment module, define the operational process steps in terms of preparation, implementation and completion, and derive key factors for each detailed process. Subsequently, the module was designed in such a way as to construct performance indicators to assess these key factors. In order to exclude subjective opinions from the assessment as much as possible, the assessment each item was constructed with indicators based on data that could be evaluated quantitatively and its usefulness was verified by applying the module to the trapped-oil recovery operation cases. We expect this the method and the technology assessment module for the trapped-oil recovery operation on sunken vessels will help to verify the adequacy of the trapped-oil recovery such operation before or after. Furthermore, it is expected that the continuous accumulation of assessment data and feedback from past or future operation cases will contribute toward enhancing the overall safety, efficiency and field applicability of trapped-oil recovery operation.

  • Load and resistance factor design is an efficient design approach that provides a system of consistent design solutions. This study aims to determine the load and resistance factors needed for the design of breakwater foundations within a probabilistic framework. In the study, four typical types of Korean breakwaters, namely, rubble mound breakwaters, vertical composite caisson breakwaters, perforated caisson breakwaters, and horizontal composite breakwaters, are investigated. The bearing capacity of breakwater foundations under wave loading conditions is thoroughly examined. Two levels of the target reliability index (RI) of 2.5 and 3.0 are selected to implement the load and resistance factors calibration using Monte Carlo simulations with 100,000 cycles. The normalized resistance factors are found to be lower for the higher target RI as expected. Their ranges are from 0.668 to 0.687 for the target RI of 2.5 and from 0.576 to 0.634 for the target RI of 3.0.

  • Donghae Port is adjacently located to a residential area wherein 26,933 generations are creating a living environment. The areas comprise Song-jeong village (5,754 generations) and Bukp-yeong village (21,179 generations). Major cargoes handled in Donghae Port are dusty limestone, cement, anthracite, and bituminous coal, etc. In the process of handling such cargoes, air pollutants including oxide dust and fine dust which adversely impact the living conditions and health of residents are generated, causing air pollution in the vicinity of the port. Currently, Donghae Port is making an effort to improve the operation environment of the infrastructure and equipment in stages, for the purpose of reducing air pollutant emissions caused by the port industries in a long-term perspective. In this study, the sphere of influence of fine dust exposure and the degree of air pollution in the surrounding area were analyzed such as the state of fine dust concentration and diffusion in the vicinity of Donghae Port, fine dust diffusion pattern and spatial distribution of high-concentration considering wind direction and speed characteristics during the day and seasonal cycles. A more effective plan to reduce the concentration of fine dust in nearby areas by combining reduction plan, is being developed in terms of improvement regarding port infrastructure and equipment, and reduction measures considering the characteristics of the atmosphere environment according to the daytime, nighttime and season.
