  • The aim of this study is to analyze the temporal and spatial distribution aspects of red tide using GIS techniques. The damage caused by red tide appears various aspects according to the species, concentration and spatial distribution of red tide plankton. Therefore, in order to prevent the damage of red tide it is important to understand the distribution characteristics of red tide by each species according to time and space. In this perspective, we analyzed the beginning outbreak area, spatial occurrence frequency and spatial migration of red tide. The spatial data used by this study was constructed by digitizing the red tide quick report and coupled with various attributes such as species, concentration and water temperature for construction of red tide database. We used various spatial analysis methods such as union, intersect, tracking, buffer and spatial interpolation for analyzing temporal and spatial characteristics of red tide. From the result of these spatial analyses, we could get the spatial information on the temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of red tide at the Southern Sea.

  • Purpose: Aortic Dissection is very dangerous, prognostic disease, which the bloodstream flow out of the true lumen of the aorta by the bursting of aortic intima resulting in a rapid dissociation of inner and outer layer from the media. It is difficult to diagnose aortic dissection clinically by normal X-ray. This study was to investigate the occurrence frequency by age and number of patients who are identified to be aortic dissection by CT (Computed Tomography) scan. Materials and methods: We investigated the trend of yearly fluctuation, gender, age, and department of clinical research of the 112 patients who conducted CT scan in C- University Hospital for two years from January 2005 to December 2006. The MIP and SSD which reconstructed CT image and the VRT image were obtained for the accurate observation. The result was investigated by comparing normal X-ray and CT scan. Results and Conclusion: 1. The yearly check of 112 patients conducted CT scan showed 37 people (41.9%) in 2005, and it was increased to 65 (58.1%) in 2006 by 1.4 times. 2. The gender distribution of patients given a CT scan showed 45 males (40.1%), and female 67 (59.9 %). The aortic dissection patients were 9 (20%) out of 45 males, 21 (31.3%) out of 67 females and women were 1.6 times more than men. Women are also 1.5 times more than men in the number of examinee. 3. The age distribution of patient's who conducted CT scan revealed that there was no patient under 30 years old while 88.3% of all patients were through 41 to 80 years old. The higher the age was, the higher the occurrence of aortic dissection was. The difference in the occurrence frequency of age was statistically significant (p<0.01). 4. The departments that requested CT scan were the emergency department 46 (41.1%), circulatory internal medicine 37 (33.0%), chest surgery 13 (11.6%), and others 6 (14.3%). The combined ratio of emergency medicine and circulatory internal medicine was 74.1% of all. The results show that the aortic dissection is a very dangerous disease whose patients visit mainly via the emergency room. 5. The aortic dissection patients had normal X-ray readings in 22 (73.3%) out of 30, and only 8 (26.7 percent) are abnormal in the X-ray diagnosis. Therefore, the CT scan needs to be enforced in order to assess accurately the disease of aortic dissection.

  • There are two methods in evaluation student s achievement. The two evaluation methods are absolute evaluation and relative evaluation. They have much advantages respectively, but also have some limitations such as being too stereotyped or causing overcompetition among learners. This paper suggests a new evaluation method which evaluates student s achievements by considering the score distribution and the frequency The proposed method classifies the scores into several clusters considering the goodness. This approach calculates the goodness by applying the RE(relaxation error), and grades the achievement scores based on the goodness. The suggested method can avoid the problem of grading caused by the narrow gap of scores because it sets a standard for grading by the calculated goodness considering the score distribution and frequency of occurrence. The method can differentiate achievements of a school from those of others, and that it is useful for selecting advanced students and dull ones, and for evaluation of classes based on student s achievement.

  • The distribution of stock density and larvae of Atrina pectinata was examined in Deukryang Bay. Sampling of adult stock was seasonally conducted from 29 stations in the bay in May, August, and November 1995 and February 1996. And the larvae were sampled with interval of 3 to 7 days from 12 stations from July to October 1996. Seasonal abundance of the adult in number and in biomass were the highest in August ($18\;inds./m^2$) and in November ($2,790\;g/m^2$), respectively, at G1 station located in the most inner bay. In frequency distribution of shell height, the mode in May appeared in 10-14 cm group with 62%, and that of the other seasons in $15{\sim}19\;cm$ group. The larvae were also distributed mainly at G1 as the adult were. The larval abundance showed a periodical cycle which seemed to be related to lunar cycle. The highest abundance of the larvae occurred on August 16 with $8\;inds./m^3$, and then decreased continuously. With regard to frequency distribution of larval shell height, the larvae less than $200\;{\mu}m$ occurred from July to October. And the mode in July appeared in small size group ($200{\sim}249\;{\mu}m$) with 38%. These results mean that A. pectinata spawned from July to October, mainly middle July to middle August. The larval distribution showed the same geographical tendency to adult distribution. Both the adult and the larvae mainly distributed in the most inner bay and west area of Deukryang island, where was shallower, warmer, and higher primary productivity than the entrance area of the bay and east area of the island. However, larval abundance of A. pectinata in this study was so low compared to adult biomass. The reason for this unusual phenomenon should be understood with the detail research in future.

  • The area of red tides occurences, which brings enormous damages every year, have been expanded to the coastal waters across the nation. Regarding to this trend, the development of red tide detection technology by using the GOCI (Geostationary Ocean Color Imager) of COMS lauched in 2010 has been drawn attentions of researchers. This study purposed on analyzing the frequency and density of red tides occurence by using the GOCI for detecting the southern sea, whereas targeted area. The observation has brought over the last three years (2012, 2013, and 2014) before the analysis was conducted. Followingly, the study could be resulted in extracting and revealing the hot spots of the red tides from two of analysis in the overlay and density. The distribution patterns of red tide occurrences according to those observed years has been shown in irregular characteristics and various changes. However, the analysis of hot spots, based on the frequency of the red tide occurrence, has revealed that the frequency of red tide occurences is continuously increased in the specific sea area. Therefore, it is concluded in that the continuous monitoring can contribute to predict accurate movements of red tides, so as establish systematic plans for preventing disasters.

  • Dominant species of macrobenthos were analyzed based on differentiation of three distinct methods: the density based method, the biomass based method and LeBris method, by considering the frequency of occurrence using quantitative data collected over 5 years (1993-1998) at 21 stations in Chonsu Bay. Sedimentary environments as well as species composition and diversity showed the spatial and temporal distribution patterns. The ranks of dominant species as determined by the density based method were more similar to the results by the LeBris method than to those from the biomass based method. Considering the temporal variation, LeBris method were more efficient than any other methods for the determination of dominant species in Chonsu Bay. Lumbrineris longifolia, Theora fragilis, and Moerella jedoensis were recognized by all three methods. A one-way analysis of variance indicated spatial distributions patterns among most of the dominant species. These species showed positive correlations to sedimentary parameters such as mean grain size. However, T. fragilis and Paraprinospio pinnata showed the temporal patterns in their distribution, and were also correlated to the benthic environment, organic content and dissolved oxygen. Some dominant species, e.g., T. fragilis, S. scutata, G. gurjanovae proved to be useful benthic indicators based on the environmental variations determinated by long-term benthic ecological monitoring in Chonsu Bay.

  • Climatic disasters are globally soaring due to recent acceleration of global warming. Especially the occurrence frequency of heavy rainfalls is increasing since the rainfall intensity is increasing due to the change of rainfall pattern, This study proposed the non-stationary frequency analysis for estimating design rainfalls in a design target year, considering the change of rainfall pattern through the climatic change scenario. The annual rainfalls, which are regionally downscaled from the BCM2 (A2 scenario) and NCEP data using a K-NN method, were used to estimate the parameters of a probability distribution in a design target year, based on the relationship between annual mean rainfalls and distribution parameters. A Gumbel distribution with a probability weighted method was used in this study. Seoul rainfall data, which are the longest observations in Korea, were used to verified the proposed method. Then, rainfall data at 7 stations, which have statistical trends in observations in 2006, were used to estimate the design rainfalls in 2020. The results indicated that the regional annual rainfalls, which were estimated through the climate change scenario, significantly affect on the design rainfalls in future.

  • Rye in Paldang was investigated with regard to the occurrence of B-chromosomes from 1963 through 1977, and frequencies of B-chromosomes were as follows; 2% (1963), 8% (1964), 8% (1965), 15% (1966), 11.5% (1968), 11.7% (1969), 20% (1975), 19.6% (1976), and 12.8% (1977). The result of the chi-square test showed statistically no significant difference between the frequency of B-chromosomes each year. The analysis revealed that distribution of B-chromosomes seemed to be relatively uniform in the rye field. With regard to the sample size 50 plants were quite enough to estimate the frequency of B-chromosomes in rye population. Quadrivalent due to translocation heterozygote were observed in the population of Paldang rye from 1966 through 1977, their frequencies being 1 to 7%. Numerical increase of B-chromosomes in rye due to non-disjunction process in the pollen as well as in the ovules was well-known phenomenon, whereas B-chromosomes tended to be eliminated in meiosis and seed fertility of rye was reduced in the individuals with B-chromosomes. The mechanism of gain or loss for B-chromosomes might support the equilibrium of B-chromosomes in Paldang rye population.

  • The drought is generally characterized by duration and severity, thus it is required to conduct the bivariate frequency analysis simultaneously considering the drought duration and severity. However, since a bivariate joint probability distribution function (JPDF) has a 3-dimensional space, it is difficult to interpret the results in practice. In order to suggest the technical solution, this study employed copula functions to estimate an JPDF, then developed conditional JPDFs on various drought durations and estimated the critical severity corresponding to non-exceedance probability. Based on the historical severe drought events, the hydrologic risks were investigated for various extreme droughts with 95% non-exceedance probability. For the drought events with 10-month duration, the most hazardous areas were decided to Gwangju, Inje, and Uljin, which have 1.3-2.0 times higher drought occurrence probabilities compared with the national average. In addition, it was observed that southern regions were much higher drought prone areas than northern and central areas.
