  • The seasonal appearance and distribution of finless porpoise (Neophocaena asiaeorientalis) was investigated with sighting survey method around Wido in West sea, Korea. Fishing survey with drag net was also conducted to investigate the species composition of inhabitants and the consignment quantity data of fisheries cooperation was collected to confirm the seasonal change of the composition and quantity of them. Finless porpoise didn't emerged around Wido in winter season, but the number of appearance in summer season amounted to 1~15 indv. for 15 observing points and the appearance frequency became lower in open sea than in inshore. There was also significant relationship between the appearances of finless porpoise (Neophocaena asiaeorientalis) and that of inhabitants. we consequently concluded that finless porpoise typically distributes from April to september, and moves to another area for wintering and food consumption from October to March.

  • Euclid is an optical/near-infrared survey mission of the European Space Agency (ESA) to investigate the nature of dark energy, dark matter and gravity by observing the geometry of the Universe and the formation of structures over cosmological timescales. The Euclid spacecraft mechanical architecture comprises the Payload Module (PLM) and the Service Module (SVM) connected by an interface structure designed to maximize thermal and mechanical decoupling. This paper shortly illustrates the mechanical system of the spacecraft and the mechanical verification philosophy which is based on the Structural and Thermal Model (STM), built at flight standard for structure and thermal qualification and the Proto Flight Model (PFM), used to complete the qualification programme. It will be submitted to a proto-flight test approach and it will be suitable for launch and flight operations. Within the overall verification approach crucial mechanical tests have been successfully performed (2018) on the SVM platform and on the sunshield (SSH) subsystem: the SVM platform static test, the SSH structure modal survey test and the SSH sine vibration qualification test. The paper reports the objectives and the main results of these tests.

  • A dietary survey was conducted using 24-hour recall method in 80 male elementary school children, 83 high school students, 87 adults and 98 elderly people over 65 years of age to discuss food and nutrient intakes among different age groups. In observing food intake by age groups, the percentage of plant foods to total food intake was significantly higher in the elderly than other groups and that of animal foods was the highest in the children. The children consumed significantly higher amounts of milk and dairy products. Carbohydrate energy percent in the elderly people was 68.0%, significantly higher than other age groups. All age groups consumed Ca below Korean RDA and especially, 65.1% of the adolescents and 68.4% of the elderly consumed below 75% of RDA. Nutrient adequacy ratio (NAR) of most nutrients was lowest in the elderly. Mean adequacy ratio (MAR), an index of overall dietary quality, was 0.94 for the children, 0.84 for the adolescents, 0.84 for the adults, and 0.73 for the elderly. The above results suggest that food and nutrient intakes have been differently affected with advancing age, and overall dietary quality of the elderly people is lower than that of other age groups. • The first objective of this study was to investigate the current status of the display of traditional costumes by observing museums in Seoul ; the National Folk Museum and the Royal Museum. The second objective was to investigate the satisfaction and need of their visitors by a survey method. To collect the data, several observations were made by the author, interviews were conducted to the students whose major is related to clothing and a survey using questionaires was conducted to the consumers who visited the museum in the fall of 2000. To analyze the data, both qualitative and quantitative methods were utilized. The major results were as follows; Two museums were differentiated in the contents of display, but some of costumes displayed were overlapped. In both museums, there were few visual explanations. The visitors were highly interested in the costume display in the museum. The most dissatisfactory area was the way and contents of costume explanation. The preferred contents, method, explanation and environment of the display of traditional costumes were partially different according to visitors’, characteristics. The reforming of the display of costumes reflecting the results will increase the visitors’satisfaction and therefore strengthen the competitiveness of the museums.

  • Near Earth Object Patrol Team (National Research Lab.) at KAO and YSTAR team at Yonsei University Observatory jointly developed a dome enclosure to be installed abroad together with a survey telescope. It has a fully-open clam shell type design to maximize the fast slew capability of the telescope and is also sturdy enough to protect the observation system under extreme weather conditions. We also developed an electric control circuit for the enclosure so that it can become a part of automated observing system. The enclosure has been installed at the Sutherland Observatory of South African Astronomical Observatory in April 2002, and has been successfully operational.

  • We present a novel method that can enhance the detection success rate of interstellar objects. Interstellar objects are objects that are not gravitationally bound to our solar system and thus are believed to have originated from other planetary systems. Since the finding of two interstellar objects, 1l/'Oumuamua in 2017 and 2l/Borisov in 2019, much attention has been paid to finding new interstellar objects. In this paper, we propose the use of Heliospheric Imagers (HIs) for the survey of interstellar objects. In particular, we show HI data taken from Solar TErrestrial RElation Observatory/Sun Earth Connection Coronal and Heliospheric Investigation and demonstrate their ability to detect 'Oumuamua-like interstellar objects. HIs are designed to monitor and study space weather by observing the solar wind traveling through interplanetary space. HIs provide the day-side observations and thus it can dramatically enlarge the observable sky range when combined with the traditional night-side observations. In this paper, we first review previous methods for detecting interstellar objects and demonstrate that HIs can be used for the survey of interstellar objects.

  • A high redshift quasar is useful to investigate the early part of our universe. Since they are one of the brightest objects in the early universe, they can provide us with clues of the growth of super massive black holes and the early metal enrichment history. To discover the high redshift quasars, we designed a survey of wide area and moderate depth; Infrared Medium-deep Survey (IMS), a J-band imaging survey of ~200 $deg^2$ area where the multi-wavelength data sets exist. To obtain the J-band data, we are using the United Kingdom Infra-Red Telescope (UKIRT), and so far we have covered ~20 $deg^2$ with Y- or J-bands over three observing runs during 2009. We used color-color diagrams of multi-wavelength bands including i, z, Y, J, K, $3.6{\mu}m$ and $4.5{\mu}m$ to select high redshift quasars. The major challenge in the selection is many M/L/T dwarfs, low redshift galaxies, and instrumental defects that can be mistaken as a high redshift quasar. We describe how such contaminating sources can be excluded by adopting multiple color-color diagrams and eye-ball inspections. So far, our selection reveals two quasar candidates at z~7.
