  • Effect of joints which pre-exist in the rock mass on the behavior of underground structures is studied. A finite element program is developed using a constitutive mode for rock masses exhibiting nonlinear anisotropic behavior. The initial loading scheme combined with reduced region of analysis is employed to minimize the problem size. A circular tunnel within rock mass is analyzed and the results are compared with those of elasto-plastic analysis to verify that the program is reasonable. The effect of joint direction is also analyzed in regard to stress relaxation, displacement, and deformation shape. It is concluded that the joint direction has significant influence on the nonlinear behavior of rock masses such that the vicinity of tunnel perpendicular to the direction of the joints is stressed to slide. It is also observed that the circular shape deforms to an elliptical shape with a major axis in the joint direction.

  • The seismic behavior of a ${\frac{1}{2}}$ scaled, three-story three-bay RC frame with masonry infill walls was studied experimentally and numerically. Pseudo-dynamic test results showed that despite following the column design provisions of modern seismic codes and neglecting the presence of infill walls, shear induced damage is unavoidable in the boundary columns. A finite element model was validated by using the results of available one-story one-bay frame tests in the literature. Simulations of the examined test frame demonstrated that boundary columns are subjected to shear demands in excess of their shear capacity. Seismic assessment of the test frame was conducted by using ASCE/SEI 41-06 (2006) guidelines and the obtained results were compared with the damage observed during experiment. ASCE/SEI 41-06 method for the assessment of boundary columns was found unsatisfactory in estimating the observed damage. Damage estimations were improved when the strain limits were used within the plastic hinge zone instead of column full height.

  • The present study provides some experimental observations on the structural developments of bubbly flow and the void wave damping in vertical, circular channel with a large diameter, and discusses the channel size effect on them. It is observed that the developing mode of bubbly flow structures and its transition mechanism are influenced by the channel size as well as the bubble size, and that they are well revealed in the behavior of wave damping.

  • Corrosion is one of the primary reasons why structures have limited durability. The present investigation is carried out to study the behavior of RC (Reinforced Concrete) structural members subjected to corrosion. Experimental investigations were carried out on National Bureau of Standard (NBS), RC beam specimens made of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) concrete. Load versus deflection behaviour was studied for different levels of corrosion i.e., 2.5%, 5%, 7.5% and 10%. It is observed that for every percentage increase in corrosion level, there is about 1.6% decrease in load carrying capacity. Also as the amount of corrosion increases there is a reduction in bond stress.

  • This paper presents experimental studies aiming at evaluation of structural behaviors of RC (Reinforced Concrete) beams externally strengthened with taper ended CFRPs(Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers). Experiments are performed with RC beams having different numbers of CFRP layers and length of each layer. The beams are subjected to four point-bending with simply supported condition. Test results of taper ended CFRPs and non-tapered CFRPs are compared and the better strengthening effect is observed from tapered ended CFRPs.

  • Dynamic responses of steel composite bridges for the Korean high-speed railway are analyzed by a modal analysis. The bridge is modeled as a simply supported beam structure and a vehicle of TGV-K is modeled using a moving load assumption. When the train is moving on a bridge, its deck shows resonance phenomenon at a critical velocity. However, it is observed that the dynamic response is greatly reduced at a special range of the span length. The results show that the reduction effect should be considered ill designing the railway bridges. A parametric study of tile dynamic response is performed for different span lengths, and specific train speeds train should be considered in designing the high speed railway bridge are suggested.

  • There is an increasing demand for using rock anchors as foundations in many geotechnical engineering structures such as transmission towers, dams, etc. For investigate the behavior and strength of rock anchors, in-situ pull-out tests were carried out. From the tests, various forms of failure of rock anchors were observed. Ultimate capacity of each failure modes of 1) Tendon failure, 2) Interface failure(tendon-grout interface, sheath-grout interface and grout-rock interface), 3) Combined interface failure, was obtained by varying the parameters such as diameter and length of tendon, grout strength, and quality of rock.

  • This study was focused on the effect of concrete strength and lateral ties of concrete columns using high-strength concrete. Thirty-six concrete columns with 20cm square cross-section were tested. Experimental parameters included the concrete strength, the distribution of longitudinal bars and the volumetric ratio, yield strength, spacing of lateral ties. From the experiments, we found that: 1) the increasing rate of the strength and ductility of concrete columns caused by confinement of lateral ties was decreasing, as the concrete strength increased. 2) The high volumetric ratio and the reduction of tie spacing had a tendency to enhance the strength and improve the ductility. 3) The high-strength concrete columns required high volumetric ratio of lateral ties to maintain the proper strength and ductility. It was observed that the current AIK design code to specify the maximum tie spacing of high-strength concrete columns led to the poor strength and ductility for seismic design.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate shear strengthening effects of R/C beams with carbon fiber sheets. The major variables are shear reinforcement ratios, CFS strengthening ratios and strengthening methods of CFS. Following conclusions can be extracted. The shear capacity of beam strengthened with CFS is about 32~87% higher than that of beams without shear reinforcement. The strengthening effects of patch type is larger than those of strip type. The strain distribution in CFS intersected with shear crack is similar to that in stirrup and larger strain is observed in the middle of the shear span. It can be estimated that shear strength reduction factor ${\alpha}$=0.3 is appropriate for peeling effect of CFS.

  • Two seismic response data from the CSMIP strong motion instrumentation of Pacoima dam are selected: San Fernando earthquake (Jan 13, 2001; ML=4.3) and Newhall earthquake (Sept. 1, 2011; ML=4.2), for the identification of the dam system. To consider the spatially nonuniform input ground motion along the dam abutment, the subspace identification technique with multiple-input and multiple-output is used to extract the dynamic behavior of the dam-reservoir interaction system. It is observed that the dam-reservoir interaction is significant from the identification of San Fernando earthquake data. The influence of added mass (from the reservoir) during strong ground motion will create a tuned-mass damper phenomenon on the dam body. The fundamental frequency of the dam will be tuned to two different frequencies but with the same mode shapes. As for the small earthquake event, the dam-reservoir interaction is insignificant.
