  • This paper deals with the topological observability analysis and the derivation of a reliability evaluation formula of a measurement system for state estimation. An analogy of the DC power flow method to the DC circuit analysis is introduced, and all the relationship between power flows and phase angles are replaced by the corresponding current-voltage relation. As a result, a set of topological measurement equation expressed in the form of the incidence matrix is derived for the topological analysis, and the observability test is carried out by examining the rank of the measurement matrix. The reliability evaluation formula was derived experimentally by testing the observability of sample systems of IEEE-14, IEEE-3.0, IEEE-57.

  • Evaluating the current condition of existing structures is of primary importance for economic and safety reasons. This can be addressed by Structural System Identification (SSI). A reliable static SSI depends on well-designed sensor configuration and loading cases, as well as efficient parameter estimation algorithms. Static SSI by the Measurement Error-Minimizing Observability Method (MEMOM) is a model-based deterministic static SSI method that could estimate structural parameters from static responses. In the current state of the art, this method is only applicable when structures are subjected to one loading case. This might lead to lack of information in some local regions of the structure (such as the null curvatures zones). To address this issue, the SSI by MEMOM using multiple loading cases is proposed in this work. Observability equations obtained from different loading cases are concatenated simultaneously and an optimization procedure is introduced to obtain the estimations by minimizing the discrepancy between the predicted response and the measured one. In addition, a Genetic-Algorithm (GA)-based Optimal Sensor Placement (OSP) method is proposed to tackle the OSP problem under multiple static loading cases for the very first time. In this approach, the Fisher Information Matrix (FIM)'s determinant is used as the metric of the goodness of sensor configurations. The numerical examples of a 3-span continuous bridge and a 13-story frame, are analyzed to validate the applicability of the extended SSI by MEMOM and the GA-based OSP method.

  • Shear deformation effects are neglected in most structural system identification methods. This assumption might lead to important errors in some structures like built up steel or composite deep beams. Recently, the observability techniques were presented as one of the first methods for the inverse analysis of structures including the shear effects. In this way, the mechanical properties of the structures could be obtained from the nodal movements measured on static tests. One of the main controversial features of this procedure is the fact that the measurement set must include rotations. This characteristic might be especially problematic in those structures where rotations cannot be measured. To solve this problem and to increase its applicability, this paper proposes an update of the observability method to enable the structural identification including shear effects by measuring only vertical deflections. This modification is based on the introduction of a numerical optimization method. With this aim, the inverse analysis of several examples of growing complexity are presented to illustrate the validity and potential of the updated method.

  • This research develops a low-cost and high accuracy kinematic calibration method based on the following principles: 1) the platform locations are accurately measured by a constrained movement to inspect a calibration target; 2) the constrained movement is chosen to guarantee the parameter observability; 3) the mechanical fixture to constrain the movement and the sensor to check the constrained movement are implemented by low-cost and high-accuracy devices; 4) the calibration is easily done at an industrial environment. The kinematic parameters calibrated with respect to a single plane aren't influenced due to the misalignment of the plane. A parameter observability is successfully obtained even through one planar constraint, which guarantees that all kinematic parameters are estimated by minimizing the cost function.

  • This paper presents the calibration for the parallel typed tilting table. The calibration system needs only simple sensing device which is a digital indicator to measure the orientation of a table. The calibration algorithm is developed by a measurement operator. It eliminates the concern about the poor parameter observability due to a large number of parameters of parallel-mechanism. This paper uses the QR-decomposition to find the optimal calibration configurations maximizing the linear independence of rows of a observation matrix. The number of identifiable parameters is examined by the rank of the observation matrix, which represents the parameter observability. The method is applied to a Parallel-typed Tilting Table and all the necessary kinematic parameters are identifiable.

  • This paper deals with a model reduction for linear systems with time varying delayed states. A generalized controllability and observability gramians are defined and obtained by solving linear matrix inequalities. Using the generalized controllability and observability gramians, the balanced state space equation is realized. The reduced model can be obtained by truncating states in the balanced realization and the upper bound of model approximation error is also presented. In order to demonstrate efficacy of the suggested method, a numerical example is performed.

  • This paper presents a method to estimate steady wind and airspeed bias error using an aircraft with GPS and airspeed sensor. The estimation uses the vector relation between the inertial, air, and wind velocities through a novel design of an extended Kalman filter. The observability analysis is also presented to show that the aircraft is required to keep changing its flight direction for the desired observability. The feasibility and performance of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated through simulations and flight experiments.

  • The most widely used method for constructing an inertial navigation system (INS)/global navigation satellite system (GNSS) coupling system is to construct an integrated navigation system using a Kalman filter. However, depending on the trajectory, non-observable state variables may be generated. In this case, the state variables are not estimated. To solve this problem, a integrated navigation system is constructed and then an observability analysis is performed. In this paper, a 24th order position-matched Kalman filter is defined to design an INS/GNSS integrated navigation system for vehicles moving with a large pitch angle change. To verify the appropriateness of the error state variables applied to the Kalman filter, an observability analysis was performed. The trajectory was divided into five segments, and the piece-wise constant system (PWCS) was assumed for each segment, and the results were analytically analyzed. The analytical results and the simulation results confirm that the error state parameters of the Kalman filter are well-designed to the estimation side.

  • This paper presents optimal placement of minimal set of phasor measurement units(PMU's) and observability of measurement system with PMU. By using the incidence matrix symbolic method which directly assigns measurement and pseudo-measurement to incidence matrix, it is much simpler and easier to analyze observability. The optimal PMU set is found through the simulated-annealing(SA) and the direct combinational method. The cooling schedule parameter which is suitable to the property of problem to solve is specified and optimal placement is proven by presented direct combinational method. Search spaces are limited within reasonable feasible solution region to reduce a unnecessary one in the SA implementation based on global search. The proposed method presents to save CPU time and estimate state vectors based on optimal PMU set.

  • This paper presents an observer design method for a special class of multi input multi output(MIMO) nonlinear systems. First, we characterize the class of MIMO nonlinear systems with a block triangular structure. Also, the observability matrices for SISO nonlinear systems are extended to MIMO systems. By using the generalized observability matrices, it is shown that under the boundedness conditions of system state and input, the proposed observer guarantees the local exponential stability of error dynamics. Finally, its application to induction motor is given to verify the proposed method.
