This study was conducted to develop Web-based multimedia content that assists undergraduate students in a clinical practicum on adult nursing. The study examined whether students in the intervention group could obtain clinical knowledge and perform more effectively when encouraged to learn Web content as compared with students in the conventional group. Web-based multimedia content consisting of 13 learning modules was developed based on real patients' scenarios through collaboration among college professors. A total of 120 nursing students (74 for the intervention and 46 for the conventional groups) from two universities in G-city, who engaged in a 3-week long clinical practicum in the digestive and respiratory units of a university hospital, participated in the study. Students' knowledge, self-directed learning, and clinical performance ability were measured using self-administered questionnaires. Data for pre- and posttests were collected over a 2-month period, between May and June of 2009. Clinical knowledge and self-reported clinical performance scores were significantly higher in students using the Web-enhanced clinical practicum than in those in the conventional group. However, there was no significant difference in self-directed learning ability between the 2 groups. These results demonstrate that Web-based multimedia content can be an effective educational tool for enhancing students' clinical knowledge and performance.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of a simulation based clinical reasoning practice program on clinical competence in nursing students. The program was based on the theoretical frameworks of simulation models and experiential learning theory. Methods: The program consisted of eight scenarios which includes three main symptoms (abdominal pain, changes in mental status, dyspnea), for improvement of clinical competencies in nursing students. A nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used for evaluation of the effects of the program. Fifty-two junior nursing students in Y University participated in the experimental group (n=25) or control group (n=27). Critical thinking was measured using a self-administered questionnaire. Clinical judgment and clinical performance were measured by a rater using the Rubric. Descriptive analysis, t-test, Mann-Whitney U, Wilcoxon signed rank test was used for data analyses. Results: Clinical judgment and clinical performance increased in the experimental group, but there were no significant differences in critical thinking. Conclusion: Results indicate that the program developed in this study is a useful strategy to enhance clinical judgment and clinical performance in nursing students. However, the program did not significantly enhance critical thinking disposition, and further study is needed to measure integrated clinical competence including critical thinking skills.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to verify the educational effectiveness of the Objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) module development activities on nursing students in the areas of performance skill, knowledge, self-directed learning readiness, and problem solving ability for medication skill. Methods: This study was a nonequivalent control group non-synchronized post-test design. The subjects (N=47), who agreed to participate in this study, were assigned to either the experimental (n=24) or control group (n=23). The experimental group was trained with OSCE module development activities for four days. The control group was trained with a traditional demonstration and practice class for the same amount of time as the experimental group. Medication performance skill and knowledge tests and surveys were done to measure self-directed learning readiness, and learning satisfaction after the experimental treatments. Results: The experimental group which participated in the OSCE module development activities showed significantly higher performance skill, self-directed learning readiness, and problem solving ability for skin test and insulin medication than that of the control group of traditional education. Conclusion: It is recommended to use the OSCE module development activities for nursing students in nursing education-learning in order to improve nursing skills.

Nursing students who play a role as future nursing professions are provided with education through various teaching and learning methods in order to develop necessary competencies. The purpose of this study is to confirm the effect of nursing practice education using multimedia. A quasi experimental study with a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used, and the participants of the study were students from two nursing colleges, who received an educational intervention using multimedia as the experimental group and those without education were selected as the control group. Data collection was conducted immediately before and after educational intervention, and data analysis was performed using the SPSS 21.0 program by x2-test, Fisher's exact probability, and t-test. As a result of the study, the experimental group was statistically significant in self-efficacy (t=3.402, p=0.015), resilience (t=2.047, p=0.045) and performance confidence (t=2.128, p=0.018) compared to the control group. Through these results, we could confirm that multi-media practical education is effective educational method for enhancing nursing students' self-efficacy, resilience, and performance confidence. Therefore, in order to establish a systematization of the nursing profession, it is essential and should be continued for nursing students to use structured multimedia and core fundamental nursing skills.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare job satisfaction and nursing performance of nurses on fixed night shifts (FNS) and nurses working three shifts (W3S), to identify the environment of night work and recognition of the viability of the FNS system. Methods: The research was conducted with 106 nurses on FNS and 257 on W3S. The nurses had worked for 1 to 11 years at A hospital, Seoul. Results: Job satisfaction was significantly higher (t=-3.51, p< .001) for nurses on FNS. However, no significant difference was found for nursing performance (t=-1.019, p=.309) between the two groups. Both groups of nurses were mostly satisfied. Subjective fatigue scores (0 to 10 points) during the night for nurses on FNS (6.02) were lower than for W3S nurses (7.28) A high percentage (88.7%) of nurses on FNS indicated a willingness to further participate in FNS. Conclusion: Results indicate that the demonstration FNS system showed its effectiveness. Therefore, efforts are needed to enhance and revitalize FNS and to upgrade the system to control patient transfer time from emergency departments to wards, and to provide nurses needed resources for emergency or intensive care.
Purpose: This study was undertaken to develop and test a mastery learning program of nursing skills for undergraduate nursing students. Methods: In this methodological study, first, the preliminary draft of a mastery learning program to provide training for nursing skills was developed based on Bloom's framework for mastery learning. Second, to test the developed program, a single-blinded, nonequivalent control group nonsynchronized study was conducted on 50 senior nursing students in a University selected by convenient sampling. Thirteen students were assigned to a control group; 13, 12, and 13 of them were assigned to intravenous therapy, transfusion, and patient transfer groups, respectively. The achievement levels and performance scores of the selected nursing skills were measured before and after the completion of the program in all the groups. Lastly, the final program was confirmed based on the results of the program testing. Results: Intravenous therapy, transfusion, and patient transfer were selected as essential nursing skills for the program based on the priorities rated by clinical instructors and staff nurses. The achievement levels of selected nursing skills were determined by Angoff scores. After participating in the program, the proportion of passers and performance scores of the nursing skills in the experimental groups were significantly higher than those in the control group. The final program was confirmed which included a diagnostic test, enrichment activities for the passers and three repetitions of corrective activities and formative assessments for non-passers. Conclusion: The results suggest that a mastery learning program for undergraduate students can lead to better improvement and performance of essential nursing skills.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of preclinical clinical performance examination (CPX) on nursing students' confidence in their nursing skills and critical thinking competence. Methods: The design of this research was one-group pretest-posttest, and the participants were 112 nursing students. The preclinical CPX consisted of a clinical examination, patient-nurse relationship, oral test of related knowledge, written test of the nursing process, and debriefing using comprehensive scenarios based on real patient cases. The confidence of nursing skills consisted of an 8-item NRS and the critical thinking competence consisted of a 12-item 4-point scale developed by researchers and measured in both the pretest and posttest. The collected data were analyzed using paired t-tests, ANOVA, and Pearson correlation coefficients. Results: The score for confidence in nursing skills (t=10.60, p<.001) and that for critical thinking competence (t=7.03, p<.001) increased significantly after preclinical CPX. Conclusion: This study showed that preclinical CPX was effective in improving nursing students' confidence in their nursing skills and critical thinking competence. Therefore, preclinical CPX is expected to be utilized in nursing practice education. Additional studies including those on control groups are recommended to compare differences between the preclinical CPX group and control group.
