  • The paper presents both theoretical and experimental study fur dynamic instabilities of a vortical cantilevered pipe with two attached lumped masses conveying fluid. The two attached lumped masses can be considered as valves or some mechanical paras in real pipe systems. Eigenvalue behaviors depending on the flow velocity are investigated for the change of Positions and magnitudes of an attached lumped mass and a tip mass. In order to verify appropriate of numerical solutions, experiments were accomplished. Theoretical predictions have a good agreement with experimental ones.

  • A serpentine channel geometry often used in a fuel cell has a strong pressure gradient between adjacent channels in specific regions. The pressure gradient helps some amount of reactant gas penetrate through a gas diffusion layer(GDL). As a result, the overall serpentine flow structure is slightly different from the intention of a designer. The purpose of this paper is to examine the effect of serpentine flow structure on current density distribution. By using a commercial code, STAR-CD, a numerical simulation is performed to analyze the fuel cell with high aspect ratio of active area. To increase the accuracy of the numerical simulation, GDL permeabilities are measured with various compressive forces. Three-dimensional flow field and current density distribution are calculated. For the verification of the numerical simulation results, water condensation process in the cathode channel is observed through a transparent bipolar plate. The result of this study shows that the region of relatively low current density corresponds that of dropwise condensation in cathode channels.

  • A wide scope of numerical simulations was performed to predict model-ship resistances by using STAR-CCM+ and OpenFOAM. The numerical results were compared with experimental measurements in towing tank to analyze statistical reliability of the present simulations. Based on the normal distribution of resistance errors in 113 cases of container carriers, tankers and very large crude-oil carriers, the confidence intervals of numerical error were estimated as [-2.64%,+2.32%] and [-1.82%, +1.87%] with 95% confidence in STAR-CCM+ and OpenFOAM, respectively. The resistance errors of liquefied natural gas carriers with single- and twin-skeg were confident in the ranges of [-2.51%,+2.64%] and [-2.29%, +1.46%], respectively. The grid uncertainty of resistance coefficients for KCS was also quantitatively analyzed by using a grid verification procedure. The grid uncertainty of OpenFOAM (5.1%) was larger than 4.4% uncertainty of STAR-CCM+ although OpenFOAM provided statistically more confident results than those of STAR-CCM+. It means that a grid system verified under a specific condition does not automatically lead to statistical reliability in general cases.

  • The aerodynamic performance of the pantograph of the next generation high sped train is analyzed. The calculation of the flow around pantograph is carried cut by FLUENT; by the steady state flow calculation with ${\kappa}-{\omega}$ SST turbulence model, the lift force of the pantograph is computed. For the verification of the numerical schemes am grid systems, flow calculations are performed with the pantograph shape which was used at the experiments performed at Railway Technical Research Institute (RTRI) in Japan. Then, the difference of lift force between numerical am experimental results is about 10%. Therefore, selected numerical schemes and the current grid system is adequate for the analysis am prediction of the aerodynamic performance of panthograph system. Based on these numerical schemes am grid system, the flow around pantograph of the next generation high sped train is calculated and the lift force of the pantograph is predicted; the lift force of the pantograph is about 146N.

  • Experimental verification of numerical results is conducted by measuring the dynamic strains of mid-points of the coupler and the lever for the 4-bar linkage mechanism with rigid bearing and flexible bearing, respectively. For the axial strain of lever mid-point, the numerical results including geometric stiffness almost agree with the experimental ones, however, the numerical results excluding geometric stiffness almost agree with the experimental ones for the axial strain of coupler mid-point. It is supposed that these phenomena should be caused by the fact that the motion of the coupler is more complicated than of the lever. The signals of dynamic strains of coupler and lever mid-points, measured by strain gages, are transformed into frequency domain by fast fourier transformer. From this experiment, the lst resonance frequencies of the coupler and the lever are obtained. It is made clear that the former almost agrees with the fundamental and the latter the 2nd mode natural frequency of the mechanism system calculated by numerical analysis.

  • In this study, numerical model for transport of radionuclide and colloid was developed. In order to solve reaction-migration governing equation for colloid and radionuclide, Strang-splitting Sequential Non-Iterative (SNI), which is one of Operator Splitting Method, was used for numerical method and this was coded by MATLAB. From the verification by comparing the simulation results with analytical solution considering only solute transport and rock diffusion, the Pearson's correlation coefficient was greater than 0.99 which demonstrates the accuracy of the model.

  • The dynamic characterization is important in making accurate predictions of the seismic response of the hybrid structures dominated by different damping mechanisms. Different damping characteristics arise from the construction of hybrid structure with different materials: steel for the upper part; reinforced concrete for the lower main part and interaction with supporting soil. The process of modeling damping matrices and experimental verification is challenging because damping cannot be determined via static tests as can mass and stiffness. The assumption of classical damping is not appropriate if the system to be analyzed consists of two or more parts with significantly different levels of damping. The dynamic response of structures is critically determined by the damping mechanisms, and its value is very important for the design and analysis of vibrating structures. A numerical algorithm capable of evaluating the equivalent modal damping ratio from structural components is desirable for improving seismic design. Two approaches are considered to explore the dynamic response of hybrid tower of cable-stayed bridges: The first approach makes use of a simplified model of 2 coupled lumped masses to investigate the effects of subsystems different damping, mass ratio, frequency ratio on dynamic characteristics and equivalent modal damping; the second approach employs a detailed numerical step-by step integration procedure.

  • The numerical analysis program using artificial displacement method is developed to analyze the deformation behavior of excavated behind ground of retention wall. The elasto-plastic model suggested by Drucker-Prager was used to represent soil behavior and the model's solution was obtained from the return mapping method. To validate of the program, the predicted results by the numerical analysis and the measured results by a field test are compared. The results of numerical analysis showed good agreement with the measured results in field and theoretical values.

  • The effect of an increasing percentage of nanofiller (glass cenosphere) with Glass/Epoxy hybrid composite curved panels modeled mathematically using the multiscale concept and subsequent numerical eigenvalues of different geometrical configurations (cylindrical, spherical, elliptical, hyperboloid and flat) predicted in this research article. The numerical model of Glass/Epoxy/Cenosphere is derived using the higher-order polynomial type of kinematic theory in association with isoparametric finite element technique. The multiscale mathematical model utilized for the customized computer code for the evaluation of the frequency data. The numerical model validation and consistency verified with experimental frequency data and convergence test including the experimental elastic properties. The experimental frequencies of the multiscale nano filler-reinforced composite are recorded through the impact hammer frequency test rig including CDAQ-9178 (National Instruments) and LABVIEW virtual programming. Finally, the nano cenosphere filler percentage and different design associated geometrical parameters on the natural frequency data of hybrid composite structural configurations are illustrated through a series of numerical examples.
