Recently, piezoelectric materials have attracted considerable attention because of its self-sensing and actuating properties. To model smart structures, numerical modeling of structures with piezoelectric devices is essential. As many factors affect the performance of smart structures, optimization of these parameters is necessary. In this paper, the shape design sensitivity analysis of the 3D piezoelectric and structural elements is developed and shape optimization is performed. For the evaluation of the sensitivity, the finite element method is used. For the shape sensitivity, the domain velocity field is calculated. An acoustic cavity model is presented as a numerical example to study the feasibility of the formulation. The continuum sensitivity is compared with the results of the finite difference method by ANSYS. And the sequential linear programming (SLP) algorithm is used as the optimization algorithm.
We present a level set method for numerical shape optimization of electromagnetic systems. The level set method does not only lead to efficient computational schemes, but also is able to handle topological changes such as merging, splitting and even disappearing of connected components. The velocity field on boundaries is obtained by a shape derivative of continuum sensitivity analysis using the material derivative concept and an adjoint variable technique. Two numerical results of dielectric optimization between electrodes showed that the level set method is feasible and effective in solving shape optimization problems of electromagnetic systems.
Topology optimization of steel and concrete composite based on truss-like material model is studied in this paper. First, the initial design domain is filled with concrete, and the steel is distributed in it. The problem of topology optimization is to minimize the volume of steel material and solved by full stress method. Then the optimized steel and concrete composite truss-like continuum is obtained. Finally, the distribution of steel material is determined based on the optimized truss-like continuum. Several numerical results indicate the numerical instability and rough boundary are settled. And more details of manufacture and construction can be presented based on the truss-like material model. Hence, the truss-like material model of steel and concrete is efficient to establish the distribution of steel material in concrete.
Current trend of design technologies shows engineers to objectify or automate the given decision-making process. The numerical optimization is an example of such technologies. However, in numerical optimization, the uncertainties are uncontrollable to efficiently objectify or automate the process. To better manage these uncertainties, Taguchi method, reliability-based optimization and robust optimization are being used. Based on the independence axiom of axiomatic design theory that illustrates the relationship between desired specifications and design parameters, the designs can be classified into three types: uncoupled, decoupled and coupled. To best approach the target performance with the maximum robustness is one of the main functional requirements of a mechanical system. Most engineering designs are pertaining to either coupled or decoupled ones, but these designs cannot currently accomplish a real robustness thus a trade-off between performance and robustness has to be made. In this research, the game theory will be applied to optimize the trade-off.
In this study, a numerical optimization to find the optimal shape of streamwise periodic ribs mounted on both of the principal walls is performed to enhance turbulent heat transfer in a rectangular channel. The optimization is based on Navier-Stokes analysis of flow and heat transfer with $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model and is implemented using response surface method. The width-to-height ratio of a rib, rib height-to-channel height ratio, rib pitch to rib height ratio and distance between opposite ribs to rib height ratio are chosen as design variables. The object function is defined as a function of heat transfer coefficient and friction drag coefficient with weighting factor. Optimum shapes of the rib have been investigated for the range of 0.0 to 0.1 of weighting factor.
This study presents a numerical optimization to optimize an axial flow fan blade to increase the efficiency. The radial basis neural network is used as an optimization method with the numerical analysis by Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations using SST model as turbulence closure. Four design variables related to airfoil maximum camber, maximum camber location, leading edge radius and trailing edge radius, respectively, are selected, and efficiency is considered as objective function which is to be maximized. Thirty designs are evaluated to get the objective function values of each design used to train the neural network. Optimum shape shows the efficiency increased by 1.0%.
A method of optimization of process parameters in Arc Welding has been discussed in this paper. The method of investigation is based on the numerical calculation of weld bead by a finite element method and non-linear optimization technique is applied to estimated the optimization process parameters from the numerical calculation. The common package program(ANSYS 4.4A) was used to obtain the process parameters for a thin plate arc welding (TIG, CO$_{2}$). The results on some test are satisfactory and the used method of this paper is a useful guide to the optimum welding condition.

An efficient method utilizing the multi-stage improved differential evolution algorithm (MSIDEA) as an optimization solver is presented here to detect the multiple-damage of structural systems. Natural frequency changes of a structure are considered as a criterion for damage occurrence. The structural damage detection problem is first transmuted into a standard optimization problem dealing with continuous variables, and then the MSIDEA is utilized to solve the optimization problem for finding the site and severity of structural damage. In order to assess the performance of the proposed method for damage identification, an experimental study and two numerical examples with considering measurement noise are considered. All the results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method for accurately determining the site and severity of multiple-damage. Also, the performance of the MSIDEA for damage detection compared to the standard differential evolution algorithm (DEA) is confirmed by test examples.
Metaheuristic algorithms are efficient techniques for a class of mathematical optimization problems without having to deeply adapt to the inherent nature of each problem. They are very useful for structural design optimization in which the cost of gradient computation can be very expensive. Among them, the characteristics of simulated annealing and genetic algorithms are briefly discussed. In Metropolis genetic algorithm, favorable features of Metropolis criterion in simulated annealing are incorporated in the reproduction operations of simple genetic algorithm. Numerical examples of structural design optimization are presented. The example structures are truss, breakwater and steel box girder bridge. From the theoretical evaluation and numerical experience, performance and applicability of metaheuristic algorithms for structural design optimization are discussed.

Cold-formed profiles have been largely used in the building industry because they can be easily produced and because they allow for a wide range of sections and thus can be utilized to meet different project requirements. Attainment of maximum performance by structural elements with low use of material is a challenge for engineering projects. This paper presents a numerical study aimed at minimizing the weight of lipped and unlipped cold-formed channel columns, following the AISI 2007 specification. Flexural, torsional and torsional-flexural buckling of columns was considered as constraints. The simulated annealing method was used for optimization. Several numerical simulations are presented and discussed to validate the proposal, in addition to an experimental example that qualifies its implementation. The ratios between lips, web width, and flange width are analyzed. Finally, it may be concluded that the optimization process yields excellent results in terms of cross-sectional area reduction.
