  • This paper proposes a numerical optimization method to design the mesoscale architecture of textile composite for simultaneously enhancing mechanical and thermal properties, which compete with each other making it difficult to design intuitively. The base cell of the periodic warp and fill yarn system is served as the design space, and optimal fibre yarn geometries are found by solving the optimization problem through the proposed method. With the help of homogenization method, analytical formulae for the effective material properties as functions of the geometry parameters of plain-woven textile composites were derived, and they are used to form the inverse homogenization method to establish the design problem. These modules are then put together to form a multiobjective optimization problem, which is formulated in such a way that the optimal design depends on the weight factors predetermined by the user based on the stiffness and thermal terms in the objective function. Numerical examples illustrate that the developed method can achieve reasonable designs in terms of fibre yarn paths and geometries.

  • In this study, a new type of energy absorbers with a functionally graded thickness is investigated, these type of absorbers absorb energy through expanding-folding processes. The expanding-folding absorbers are composed of two sections: a thin-walled aluminum matrix and a thin-walled steel mandrel. Previous studies have shown higher efficiency of the mentioned absorbers compared to the conventional ones. In this study, the effect of thickness which has been functionally-graded on the aluminum matrix (in which expansion occurs) was investigated. To this end, initial functions were considered for the matrix thickness, which was ascending/descending along the axis. The study was done experimentally and numerically. Comparing the experimental data with the numerical results showed high consistency between the numerical and experimental results. In the final section of this study, the best energy absorber functionally graded thickness was introduced by optimization using a third-order genetic algorithm. The optimization results showed that by choosing a minimum thickness of 1.6 mm and the exponential coefficient of 3.25, the most optimal condition can be obtained for descending thickness absorbers.

  • This paper presents a multi-costraint optimization model for redundant system reliability. The optimization model is usually formulated as a nonlinear integer programming (NIP) problem. This paper reformulates the NIP problem into a linear integer programming (LIP) problem. Then an efficient 'Branch and Straddle' algorithm is proposed to solve the LIP problem. The efficiency of this algorithm stems from the simultaneous handling of multiple variables, unlike in ordinary branch and bound algorithms. A numerical example is given to illustrate this algorithm.

  • In this paper, we develop continuum-based design sensitivity analysis (DSA) methods using both direct differential method (DDM) and adjoint variable method (AVM) for non-shape design problems. The developed DSA method is further utilized for the topology design optimization of 3-dimensional structures. In numerical examples, the analytical DSA results are verified using finite difference ones. The topology optimization method yields very reasonable results in physical point of view.

  • In this paper we present a new iteration method for solving optimization problems governed by partial differential equations. We generalize the existing methods such as simple gradient methods and pseudo-time methods to get an efficient iteration method. Numerical tests show that the convergence of the new iteration method is much faster than those of the pseudo-time methods especially when the parameter $\sigma$ in the cost functional is small.

  • In this paper, we propose two limited memory BFGS algorithms with a nonmonotone line search technique for unconstrained optimization problems. The global convergence of the given methods will be established under suitable conditions. Numerical results show that the presented algorithms are more competitive than the normal BFGS method.

  • This paper considers the unconstrained global optimization with the revised filled function methods. The minimization sequence could leave from a local minimizer to a better minimizer of the objective function through minimizing an auxiliary function constructed at the local minimizer. Some promising numerical results are also included.

  • Conventional methods to solve the nonlinear programming problem range from augmented Lagrangian methods to sequential quadratic programming (SQP) methods. NPSOL, which is a SQP code, has been widely used to solve various optimization problems but is still subject to many numerical problems such as convergence to local optima, difficulties in initialization and in handling non-smooth cost functions. Recently, many evolutionary methods have been developed for constrained optimization. Among them, CEALM (Co-Evolutionary Augmented Lagrangian Method) shows excellent performance in the following aspects: global optimization capability, low sensitivity to the initial parameter guessing, and excellent constraint handling capability due to the benefit of the augmented Lagrangian function. This algorithm is ...

  • Numerical optimization technique with Navier-Stokes code has been used to reduce the drag of conventional ogival nose. Forebody optimizations are performed for supersonic laminar and turbulent flow conditions. To alleviate the computing time of aerodynamic drag calculation, axisymmetric boundary condition is implemented in the 3-dimensional Navier-Stokes code. The automated optimization procedure with gradient based method results in a drag reduction of $4\;\%$.

  • In this paper, a nonlinear optimization problem is proposed to obtain a structured static output feedback controller for discrete time linear systems. The proposed optimization problem has LMI (Linear Matrix Inequality) constraints and a non-convex objective function. Using the conditional gradient method, we can obtain suboptimal solutions of the proposed optimization problem. Numerical examples show the effectives of the proposed approach.
