고분해능 장애물 탐지를 위한 중첩 초음파 센서 링의 최적 설계 (Optimal Design of Overlapped Ultrasonic Sensor Ring for High Resolution Obstacle Detection)

  • This paper presents the optimal design of an overlapped ultrasonic sensor ring for high resolution obstacle detection of an autonomous mobile robot. It is assumed that a set of low directivity ultrasonic sensors of the same type are arranged along a circle of nonzero radius at a regular spacing with their beams overlapped. First, taking into account the dead angle region, the entire range of obstacle detection is determined with reference to the center of an overlapped ultrasonic sensor ring. Second, the optimal design index of an overlapped ultrasonic sensor ring is defined as the area closeness of three sensing subzones resulting from beam overlap. Third, the lower and upper bounds on the number of ultrasonic sensors are derived, which can guarantee minimal beam overlap and also avoid excessive beam overlap among adjacent ultrasonic sensors. Fourth, employing a commercial low directivity ultrasonic sensor, an optimal design example of an overlapped ultrasonic sensor ring is given along with the ultrasonic sensor ring prototype mounted on top of a mobile robot. Finally, some experimental results using our prototype ultrasonic sensor ring are given to demonstrate the validity and performance of an optimally overlapped ultrasonic sensor ring for high resolution obstacle detection.

고정밀 백금저항온도계를 이용한 교정기관의 온도교정능력 수행평가 (Performance Assessment on Temperature Calibration Capability of the Calibration Laboratories Using High-Precision Platinum Resistance Thermometers)

  • Calibration capabilities for thermometer calibration by comparison method were assessed using high-precision industrial platinum resistance thermometers (IPRT). It was found in the performance assessment that out of 31 laboratories who participated, 28 laboratories resulted magnitude of En number less than 1 at every calibration points they submitted results in the range from 50 to $500^{\circ}C$. The results of about 75% of the laboratories showed the difference from the assigned values less than 1/10 of the tolerance level of the class B IPRT. This indicates that the participating calibration laboratories performed with satisfactory level that was enough to calibrate IPRTs to significant precision. The sensors used in this work were manufactured and chosen by the criteria of long-term instability less than 4 mK and hysteresis less than 8 mK in the temperature range used in this work. Furthermore, the change in the resistance of the sensors in the calibration temperature range were less than the uncertainty of the calibration, 25 mK (k=2).

적재율이 슬로싱 충격압력에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Effect of Filling Ratio on Sloshing Impact Pressure)

  • This study presents the effect of filling ratio on sloshing impact pressure. The experiment was done with three filling ratios of 20%, 70%, and 95% of the tank height. The input of the motion was regular excitation. The total number of sensors in use were 53. They were installed on tank top and tank wall. The maximum pressures and the average of one third highest impact pressures for the whole pressure sensors were investigated. The result shows clearly the location of sensors which are exposed to the high impact pressures for different filling ratios. The characteristics of the impact patterns for three filling ratios were also examined.

공군기지의 C-UAS 센서 배치를 위한 다목적 최적화 모델 (Multi-objective Optimization Model for C-UAS Sensor Placement in Air Base)

  • Recently, there are an increased the number of reports on the misuse or malicious use of an UAS. Thus, many researchers are studying on defense schemes for UAS by developing or improving C-UAS sensor technology. However, the wrong placement of sensors may lead to a defense failure since the proper placement of sensors is critical for UAS defense. In this study, a multi-object optimization model for C-UAS sensor placement in an air base is proposed. To address the issue, we define two objective functions: the intersection ratio of interested area and the minimum detection range and try to find the optimized placement of sensors that maximizes the two functions. C-UAS placement model is designed using a NSGA-II algorithm, and through experiments and analyses the possibility of its optimization is verified.

  • One of the most important factors so that mobile objects can achieve their purpose is the information about their positions. In this paper, we propose an improved beacon system, to which ultrasonic sensors are attached, for the indoor localization of mobile objects. We have researched so that it can cover the wider space and estimate more accurate positions than the existent beacon systems. The existent beacon systems have the constraint that one beacon cannot cover wide area since ultrasonic sensors have limits in the angle of signal (beam-angle) on which their signal strength depends. Hence, we used the active beacon which consists of a pan-tilt mechanism and a beacon module. The active beacon system can always aim at mobile objects in order to transmit the strongest signal of the ultrasonic sensors into the objects using the pan-tilt mechanism. In addition, this system is inexpensive because it can decrease the number of beacons by about a half of the beacons of the existent system. Finally, the results show what is the difference between the active beacon system and existent beacon systems, and how accurate it is.

Collaborative Wireless Sensor Networks for Target Detection Based on the Generalized Approach to Signal Processing

  • Collaboration in wireless sensor networks must be fault-tolerant due to the harsh environmental conditions in which such networks can be deployed. This paper focuses on finding signal processing algorithms for collaborative target detection based on the generalized approach to signal processing in the presence of noise that are efficient in terms of communication cost, precision, accuracy, and number of faulty sensors tolerable in the wireless sensor network. Two algorithms, namely, value fusion and decision fusion constructed according to the generalized approach to signal processing in the presence of noise, are identified first. When comparing their performance and communication overhead, decision fusion is found to become superior to value fusion as the ratio of faulty sensors to fault free sensors increases. The use of the generalized approach to signal processing in the presence of noise under designing value and decision fusion algorithms in wireless sensor networks allows us to obtain the same performance, but at low values of signal energy, as under the employment of universally adopted signal processing algorithms widely used in practice.

MXene 기반의 웨어러블 센서 제작 및 평가 (Fabrication and Evaluation of the MXene-Based Wearable Sensor)

  • Herein, we propose a simple fabrication method for MXene-coated V-groove sensors for applications. To enhance the sensitivity of this sensor, we applied MXene particles, instead of conventional metal layers, as a sensing material on the sensor's surface. This allows for an easier fabrication, as well as higher sensitivity of the sensor compared to those of our previously demonstrated metal-based V-groove sensor. Additionally, polyurethane-acrylate, a UV-curable liquid polymer, can be easily applied using micro-electromechanical systems-based surface-texture micromachining. The sensor sensitivity is approximately 0.08 /mm, and it can be improved by increasing the number of V-grooves. We believe that the proposed MXene-based wearable sensor offers a great potential in detecting various types of motions characteristic of human activities.

Decoupled Location Parameter Estimation of 3-D Near-Field Sources in a Uniform Circular Array using the Rank Reduction Algorithm

  • An algorithm is presented for estimating the 3-D location (i.e., azimuth angle, elevation angle, and range) of multiple sources with a uniform circular array (UCA) consisting of an even number of sensors. Recently the rank reduction (RARE) algorithm for partly-calibrated sensor arrays was developed. This algorithm is applicable to sensor arrays consisting of several identically oriented and calibrated linear subarrays. Assuming that a UCA consists of M sensors, it can be divided into M/2 identical linear subarrays composed of two facing sensors. Based on the structure of the subarrays, the steering vectors are decomposed into two parts: range-independent 2-D direction-of-arrival (DOA) parameters, and range-relevant 3-D location parameters. Using this property we can estimate range-independent 2-D DOAs by using the RARE algorithm. Once the 2-D DOAs are available, range estimation can be obtained for each source by defining the 1-D MUSIC spectrum. Despite its low computational complexity, the proposed algorithm can provide an estimation performance almost comparable to that of the 3-D MUSIC benchmark estimator.

A Review of Rear Axle Steering System Technology for Commercial Vehicles

  • This study reviews the rear or tag axle steering system's concepts and technology applied to commercial vehicles. Most commercial vehicles are large in size with more than two axles. Maneuvering them around tight corners, narrow roads, and spaces is a difficult job if only the front axle is steerable. Furthermore, wear and tear in tires will increase as turn angle and number of axles are increased. This problem can be solved using rear axle steering technology that is being used in commercial vehicles nowadays. Rear axle steering system technology uses a cylinder mounted on one of rear axles called a steering cylinder. Cylinder control is the primary objective of the real axle steering system. There are two types of such steering mechanisms. One uses master and slave cylinder concept while the other concept is relatively new. It goes by the name of smart axle, self-steered axle, or smart steering axle driven independently from the front wheel steering. All these different types of steering mechanisms are discussed in this study with detailed description, advantages, disadvantages, and safety considerations.

Utilisation of IoT Systems as Entropy Source for Random Number Generation

  • Using random numbers to represent uncertainty and unpredictability is essential in many industries. This is crucial in disciplines like computer science, cryptography, and statistics where the use of randomness helps to guarantee the security and dependability of systems and procedures. In computer science, random number generation is used to generate passwords, keys, and other security tokens as well as to add randomness to algorithms and simulations. According to recent research, the hardware random number generators used in billions of Internet of Things devices do not produce enough entropy. This article describes how raw data gathered by IoT system sensors can be used to generate random numbers for cryptography systems and also examines the results of these random numbers. The results obtained have been validated by successfully passing the FIPS 140-1 and NIST 800-22 test suites.
