This paper is about the development of an insole sensor system that can determine the model of an exoskeleton robot for lower limb that is a multi-degree of freedom system. First, the study analyzed the kinematic model of an exoskeleton robot for the lower limb that changes according to the gait phase detection of a human. Based on the ground reaction force (GRF), which is generated when walking, to proceed with insole sensor development, the sensing type, location, and the number of sensors were selected. The center of pressure (COP) of the human foot was understood first, prior to the development of algorithm. Using the COP, an algorithm was developed that is capable of detecting the gait phase with small number of sensors. An experiment at 3 km/h speed was conducted on the developed sensor system to evaluate the developed insole sensor system and the gait phase detection algorithm.
The ambient vibration measurement is an output-data-only dynamic testing where natural excitations are represented, for instance, by winds and typhoons. The modal identification involving output-only measurements requires the use of specific modal identification techniques. This paper presents the application of a reliable method (the Stochastic Subspace Identification - SSI) implemented in a general purpose software. As a criterion toward the robustness of identified modes, a bio-inspired optimization algorithm, with a highly nonlinear objective function, is introduced in order to find the optimal deployment of a reduced number of sensors across a large civil engineering structure for the validation of its modal identification. The Ting Kau Bridge (TKB), one of the longest cable-stayed bridges situated in Hong Kong, is chosen as a case study. The results show that the proposed method catches eigenvalues and eigenvectors even for a reduced number of sensors, without any significant loss of accuracy.
Worldwide, studies on intelligent vehicles for the convenience of drivers have been actively conducted as the number of cars has increased. However, vehicle convenience enabled by buttons lowers the concentration on driving and hence poses as a huge threat to the safety of the driver. The use of one of the convenient features, impaired driving auxiliary equipment, is limited because of its complex usage, and this device also hinders the front view of the driver. This paper proposes a vehicle-control device for controlling the convenient features as well as changes in speed and direction using gestures and motions of the driver. This device consists of an ultrasonic sensor for recognizing movement, an arduino for accepting signal control functions and servo and DC motors apply to various vehicle parts. Firstly, the vehicle-control device was designed using a 3D CAD program known as Solid-works based on the size of the steering wheel. Then, through simulations, a suitable length for minimizing the absorbent between ultrasonic sensors was confirmed using a program known as COMSOL Multiphysics. Finally, simulation results were verified through experiments, and the optimal size of the device was identified through the number of errors.
The number of lens groups in modern zoom camera systems is increased above that of conventional systems in order to improve the speed of the auto focus with the high quality image. As a result, it is difficult to calculate zoom loci using the conventional analytic method, and even the recent one-step advanced numerical calculation method is not optimal because of the time-consuming problem generated by the iteration method. In this paper, in order to solve this problem, we suggest a new unified analytic method for zoom lens loci with finite object distance including infinite object distance. This method is induced by systematically analyzing various distances between the object and other groups including the first lens group, for various situations corresponding to zooming equations of the finite lens systems after using a spline interpolation for each lens group. And we confirm the justification of the new method by using various zoom lens examples. By using this method, we can easily and quickly obtain the zoom lens loci not only without any calculation process of iteration but also without any limit on the group number and the object distance in every zoom lens system.
A cluster topology was proposed with the assumption of zero noise to improve the performance of wireless body area networks (WBANs). However, in WBANs, the transmission power should be reduced as low as possible to avoid the effect of electromagnetic waves on the human body and to extend the lifetime of a battery. Therefore, in this work, we consider a bit error rate for a cluster-based WBAN and analyze the performance of the system while the transmission of sensors and cluster headers (CHs) is controlled. Moreover, a hierarchical topology is proposed for the cluster-based WBAN to further improve the throughput of the system; this proposed system is called as the hierarchical cluster WBAN. The hierarchical cluster WBAN is combined with a transmission control scheme, that is, complete control, spatial reuse superframe, to increase the throughput. The proposed system is analyzed and evaluated based on several factors of the system model, such as signal-to-noise ratio, number of clusters, and number of sensors. The calculation result indicates that the proposed hierarchical cluster WBAN outperforms the cluster-based WBAN in all analyzed scenarios.
Monitoring large-scale civil engineering structures such as offshore platforms and high-large buildings requires a large number of sensors of different types. Innovative sensor data information technologies are very extremely important for data transmission, storage and retrieval of large volume sensor data generated from large sensor networks. How to obtain the optimal sensor set and placement is more and more concerned by researchers in vibration-based SHM. In this paper, a method of determining the sensor location which aims to extract the dynamic parameter effectively is presented. The method selects the number and place of sensor being installed on or in structure by through the tolerance domain statistical inference algorithm combined with second order sensitivity technology. The method proposal first finds and determines the sub-set sensors from the theoretic measure point derived from analytical model by the statistical tolerance domain procedure under the principle of modal effective independence. The second step is to judge whether the sorted out measured point set has sensitive to the dynamic change of structure by utilizing second order characteristic value sensitivity analysis. A 76-high-building benchmark mode and an offshore platform structure sensor optimal selection are demonstrated and result shows that the method is available and feasible.
The development of USN(Ubiquitous Sensor Network) technology is creating numerous application areas. Although a network configuration with fixed sensors was the norm in the past, the coexistence of mobile and fixed sensor nodes is a new trend. Fixed sensor networks focused on the energy efficiency of nodes, but the latest studies consider guaranteeing the mobility of nodes and maintaining their connectivity, while remaining energy efficient at the same time. This paper proposes a routing protocol for a mobile ad-hoc sensor network that improves the mobility, connectivity and energy efficiency of nodes while allowing for the management and maintenance of a large number of nodes even in a complex communication environment where mobile and fixed nodes coexist. An algorithm for multi-hop multi-paths, a technique for topology reconfiguration by node movement prediction and vibration sensors, path setting for a large number of nodes, and efficient data transfer technology have been introduced to implement the modified LEAHC-AOMDV protocol. Furthermore, the excellence of this protocol was verified through a comparative experiment with the conventional LEACH protocol.
Researches using time reversal acoustics(TRA) for impact localization have been paid attention to recently. Dispersion characteristics of Lamb waves, which restrict the utility of classical nondestructive evaluation based on time-of-flight information, can be compensated through the application of TRA to Lamb waves on a plate. This study investigates the spatial focusing performance of time reversal Lamb waves on a plate using finite element analysis. In particular, the virtual sensor effect caused by multiple wave reflections at the boundaries of a plate is shown to enable the spatial focusing of Lamb waves though a very small number of surface-bonded piezoelectric(PZT) sensors are available. The time window size of forward response signals, are normalized with respect to the number of virtual active sensors. Then their effects on the spatial focusing performance of Lamb waves are investigated.

Recently, the enormous increase in the volume of remotely sensed data is being acquired by an ever-growing number of earth observation satellites. The combining of diversely sourced imagery together is an important requirement in many applications such as data fusion, city modeling and object recognition. Aerial triangulation is a procedure to reconstruct object space from imagery. However, since the different kinds of imagery have their own sensor model, characteristics, and resolution, the previous approach in aerial triangulation (or georeferencing) is performed on a sensor model separately. This study evaluated the advantages of aerial triangulation of large number of images from multi-sensors simultaneously. The incorporated multi-sensors are frame, push broom, and whisky broom cameras. The limits and problems of push-broom or whisky broom sensor models can be compensated by combined triangulation with frame imagery and vise versa. The reconstructed object space from multi-sensor triangulation is more accurate than that from a single model. Experiments conducted in this study show the more accurately reconstructed object space from multi-sensor triangulation.
