Routing Protocols for VANETs: An Approach based on Genetic Algorithms

  • Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs) are self-configuring networks where the nodes are vehicles equipped with wireless communication technologies. In such networks, limitation of signal coverage and fast topology changes impose difficulties to the proper functioning of the routing protocols. Traditional Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANET) routing protocols lose their performance, when communicating between vehicles, compromising information exchange. Obviously, most applications critically rely on routing protocols. Thus, in this work, we propose a methodology for investigating the performance of well-established protocols for MANETs in the VANET arena and, at the same time, we introduce a routing protocol, called Genetic Network Protocol (G-NET). It is based in part on Dynamic Source Routing Protocol (DSR) and on the use of Genetic Algorithms (GAs) for maintenance and route optimization. As G-NET update routes periodically, this work investigates its performance compared to DSR and Ad Hoc on demand Distance Vector (AODV). For more realistic simulation of vehicle movement in urban environments, an analysis was performed by using the VanetMobiSim mobility generator and the Network Simulator (NS-3). Experiments were conducted with different number of vehicles and the results show that, despite the increased routing overhead with respect to DSR, G-NET is better than AODV and provides comparable data delivery rate to the other protocols in the analyzed scenarios.

A Simulation-Based Study of FAST TCP Compared to SCTP: Towards Multihoming Implementation Using FAST TCP

  • The current multihome-aware protocols (like stream control transmission protocol (SCTP) or parallel TCP for concurrent multipath data transfer (CMT) are not designed for high-capacity and large-latency networks; they often have performance problems transferring large data files over shared long-distance wide area networks. It has been shown that SCTP-CMT is more sensitive to receive buffer (rbuf) constraints, and this rbuf-blocking problem causes considerable throughput loss when multiple paths are used simultaneously. In this research paper, we demonstrate the weakness of SCTP-CMT rbuf constraints, and we then identify that rbuf-blocking problem in SCTP multihoming is mostly due to its loss-based nature for detecting network congestion. We present a simulation-based performance comparison of FAST TCP versus SCTP in high-speed networks for solving a number of throughput issues. This work proposes an end-to-end transport layer protocol (i.e., FAST TCP multihoming as a reliable, delaybased, multihome-aware, and selective ACK-based transport protocol), which can transfer data between a multihomed source and destination hosts through multiple paths simultaneously. Through extensive ns-2 simulations, we show that FAST TCP multihoming achieves the desired goals under a variety of network conditions. The experimental results and survey presented in this research also provide an insight on design decisions for the future high-speed multihomed transport layer protocols.

Hole 구조 상변화 메모리의 전기 및 열 특성 (Electro-Thermal Characteristics of Hole-type Phase Change Memory)

  • In this paper, we have manufactured hole type PRAM unit cell using phase change material $Ge_2Sb_2Te_5$. The phase change material $Ge_2Sb_2Te_5$ was deposited on hole of 500 nm size using sputtering method. Reset current of PRAM unit cell was confirmed by measuring R-V characteristic curve. Reset current of manufactured hole type PRAM unit cell is 15 mA, 100 ns. And electro and thermal characteristics of hole type PRAM unit cell were analyzed by 3-D finite element analysis. From simulation temperature of PRAM unit cell was $705^{\circ}C$.

  • The architecture and circuit design of low voltage, high performance barrel shifter is proposed in this paper. The proposed architecture consists of two arrays for byte and bit rotate/shift to perform 32-bit operation and is preferred for even bigger data length as it can be adapted for 64-bit extention with no increase of number of stages. NORA logic structure was used for circuit implementation to achieve the best performance in terms of speed, power and area. The complicated cloking control has been resolved with the ingenious design of clock dirver. The circuit simulation results in 3.05ns delay, 9.37㎽ power consumption at 1V, 160MHz operation when its implemented in low power $0.5\mu\textrm{m}$ CMOS technology.

  • The turbulent flow with wake, reattachment and recirculation flow is very important from the viewpoint of engineering. But that is still difficult because of especially the unsteady problems which are related with the vehicle dynamics and the aerodynamics noise. This paper evaluate LES that can analyze about all fluid flow region including the laminar, transition and turbulent. So we compare the results of LES with those of PIV measurement and Reynolds averaging models. In conclusion, LES predicts flow behavior better than Reynolds averaging models.

  • This paper deals with the mesurement and the analysis by means of EMTP simulation for the fast-rising switching surges. The fast-rising surges having up to 180ns of front time and 3.42 p.u of peak value were measured at the 154KV substations. The fast-rising surges are expected to cause electric breakdown because the penetrating surges to the transformers result in the higher stress in the winding end than the average stress along the winding.

A History Retransmission Algorithm for Online Arcade Video Games

  • In this paper, we suggest a game system that can support network modules for multi-platform based video games, and built a system that can convert from a single-user game to multi-user game. In this system, we bring in an initial delay buffering scheme on clients to handle any periods of latency occurring from the load fluctuation in a network, when a real-time game is played, and shows that stable play for a game is achieved as the result of the scheme. This paper also presents a retransmission algorithm based on the history of game commands to handle drawbacks of UDP mechanism. And, we evaluate the network delay and packet loss using the simulation tool NS2, and shows the case of 0.3 second buffer delay is the most suitable for recovery.

A Certificate Revocation List Distribution Scheme over the eMBMS for Vehicular Networks

  • To verify the trustworthiness of messages, public key certificates and certificate revocation list(CRL) has been standardized for vehicular networks. However, timely distribution of large CRLs to vehicles should be more elaborated with low bandwidth utilization from a practical point of view. To address this concern, we propose a CRL distribution scheme using long term evolution(LTE) point-to-multicast transmission, namely the enhanced multimedia broadcast multicast service(eMBMS). The schem is much more resource efficient than the existing unicast CRL distribution schemes for vehicular networks and it allows realizing the regional CRL distribution schemes efficiently in LTE network. By means of ns-3 simulation, we analyze the performance, latency, and execution time of the scheme in terms of varying coverage of the multimedia broadcast multicast service over single frequency network (MBFSN).

시그모이드 함수의 디지털 구현에 관한 연구 (On the Digital Implementation of the Sigmoid function)

  • 디지털 신경회로망의 구현에 있어 시그모이드 함수의 구현은 매우 복잡하고 구현하기 어렵다. 따라서, 본 논문에서는 디지털 신경회로망 구현에 문제가 되는 시그모이드 함수처리를 위한 설계 방법을 제안하였다. 제안된 방법은 잉여수계를 이용하여 MAC(Multiplier and Accumulator) 연산 시, 캐리 전파 없이 고속의 연산을 수행할 수 있고 시그모이드 함수처리를 고속으로 수행할 수 있다. 모의실험결과, 각각의 신경 프로세스에 있어서 4.6nsec 이상의 속도를 보임으로써 고속디지털 신경회로망 구현에 적용될 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

CLSR: Cognitive Link State Routing for CR-based Tactical Ad Hoc Networks

  • The Cognitive Radio (CR) paradigm in tactical ad hoc networks is an important element of future military communications for network-centric warfare. This paper presents a novel Cognitive Link State Routing protocol for CR-based tactical ad hoc networks. The proposed scheme provides prompt and reliable routes for Primary User (PU) activity through procedures that incorporate two main functions: PU-aware power adaptation and channel switching. For the PU-aware power adaptation, closer multipoint relay nodes are selected to prevent network partition and ensure successful PU communication. The PU-aware channel switching is proactively conducted using control messages to switch to a new available channel based on a common channel list. Our simulation study based on the ns-3 simulator demonstrates that the proposed routing scheme delivers significantly improved performance in terms of average end-to-end delay, jitter, and packet delivery ratio.
