  • The physiological signals measured by Oriental Medicine instruments have been analyzed quantitatively in the view of the rule of promoting and counteracting relation of five evolutive phases theory. We tried to reduce the physiological signals measured by EAV(Elec-tro-Acupuncture according to Voll) and IR thermography to the representation of five evelutive phases. The EAV index and local skin temperature on acupuncture points of each phases measured and normalized so that the total value of five phases became unity. We assumed that the normalized EAV index and local skin temperature mean the deficiency or excess of Qi for each phases. The state of Qi distribution for each phases were approximately agree with the diagnostic pattern of O. M. doctor. Taking account of the Qi distribution state of·or the five evolutive phases, we performed a proper needle insertion on acupuncture points to induce the distinct change of Qi for each phases. We compared the measured results with the predictions of Qi variation by the rule of pro- moting and counteracting relation over the five evolutive phases. For all cases, the variation of Qi in the own phase on which a needle insertion was performed were exactly same to the theoretical prediction and partial agreement was shown for the other four phases. The same analysis was carried to the results of skin temperature measurements at accupoints. We found that the local skin temperature at accupoints of each phases shelved a finite change by the needle insertion and the behavior- of its change were strongly correlated to the rule of promoting and counteracting relation of five evolutive phases.

  • Magneto-optic Kerr Effect(MOKE), AFM and magnetoresistance measurements have been carried out on as-deposited and annealed Magnetic Tunnel Junctions(MTJs) with junction sizes 180, 250, 320 and 380 $\mu\textrm{m}$ in order to investigate the correlation among interlayer exchange coupling, surface roughness and junction size. Relatively irregular variations of coercivity $H_{c}$ (∼17.5 Oe) and interlayer exchange coupling $H_{E}$ (∼17.5 Oe) are observed over the junction in as-deposited sample prepared by DC magnetron sputtering. After annealing at $200^{\circ}C$, $H_{c}$ decreases to 15 Oe, while $H_{ E}$ increases to 20 Oe with smooth local variation. $H_{E}$ shows very good correlation with surface roughness across the junction in agreement with Neel's orange peel coupling. The increasing slope per $\mu\textrm{m}$ of normalized $H_{c}$ and $H_{E}$ are same near junction edge along free-layer direction irrespective of junction size, giving relatively uniform $H_{c}$ and $H_{ E}$ for wider junction size. Thickness profiles of the junctions measured with $\alpha$-step show increasingly flat top surface for larger junctions, indicating better uniformity for large. junctions in agreement with the normalized$ H_{c}$ and H$/_{E}$ curves. TMR ratios also increase with increasing junction size, indicating improvement for larger uniform junctions.

  • Background: Although thromboembolism is common and one of the major causes of mortality in cancer patients, maintaining therapeutic anticoagulation effect with warfarin is challenging. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and the causes of non-therapeutic INR (International Normalized Ratio) in cancer patients. Methods: Medical and pharmacy records for cancer patients managed by the pharmacist-run anticoagulation service (ACS) between May, 2010 and April, 2011 at Seoul National University Hospital were retrospectively reviewed. The causes of non-therapeutic INR were identified and compared with the results from a former study with mechanical heart valve patients. Results: A total of 335 cancer patients and 6,737 patient-visits were analyzed producing 68% (n=4,590) of non-therapeutic INR readings. Eighty-five percent of the non-therapeutic INR readings were categorized as sub-therapeutic. Frequent causes linked to non-therapeutic INR included inadequate dosage adjustment (21.8%), changes in health status (11.8%), dietary changes (8.1%), and drug interactions (4.2%). More than half of the non-therapeutic INR values had no known etiology. As causes for non-therapeutic INR, changes in health status (p<0.0001), adverse reactions (p<0.0001), and dietary changes (p=0.017) were statistically more frequent in cancer patients than in patients with mechanical heart valves. Furthermore, exposure to sub-therapeutic INR were more prevalent in cancer patients than in patients with mechanical heart valve (p<0.0001). Conclusions: This study shows that there is a tendency to keep the level of INR low and that health status change, dietary change, and drug interactions are found to be frequent causes for non-therapeutic INR in cancer patients.

  • Land surface temperature in ecohydrology is a variable that links surface structure to soil processes and yet its spatial prediction across landscapes with variable surface structure is poorly understood. And there are an insufficient number of soil temperature monitoring stations. In this study, a grid-based land surface temperature prediction model is proposed. Target sites are Andong and Namgang dam region. The proposed model is run in the following way. At first, geo-referenced site specific air temperatures are estimated using a kriging technique from data collected from 60 point weather stations. Then surface soil temperature is computed from the estimated geo-referenced site-specific air temperature and normalized difference vegetation index. After the model is calibrated with data collected from observed remote-sensed soil temperature, a soil temperature map is prepared based on the predictions of the model for each geo-referenced site. The daily and monthly simulated soil temperature shows that the proposed model is useful for reproducing observed soil temperature. Soil temperatures at 30 and 50 cm of soil depth are also well simulated.

  • In Digital On-Channel Repeaters (DOCR) of Terrestrial-DMB (Digital Multimedia Broadcasting), there exist feedback signals generated from transmit antenna and re-entering at receive antenna. Therefore DOCR becomes unstable unless the feedback signal is properly eliminated. Previous research proposed a feedback canceller to estimate the feedback channel to deal with this problem. However formerly used estimation algorithms show unsatisfied performance in terms of convergence rate and quality although their implementations are simple. This paper applies PNLMS (Proportionate Normalized Least Mean Squares) adaptive algorithm to feedback channel estimation and evaluates the performances which solve the problem of feedback signal effectively.

  • The present study observed the effects of a green tea (Camellia sinensis) flower extract (GTFE) on melanin synthesis in B16-F10 melanoma cells. GTFE exhibited antioxidant activity on 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl and inhibited mushroom tyrosinase activity in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, GTFE significantly diminished ${\alpha}-melanocyte$ stimulating hormone (${\alpha}-MSH$) stimulated cellular melanin content and tyrosinase activity throughout the concentration range evaluated. Based on RNA sequencing analysis, differential gene expression patterns observed in ${\alpha}-MSH$ stimulated B16-F10 melanoma cells were normalized by the addition of GTFE. In particular, the expression levels of melanoregulin and tyrosinase genes which are key regulating genes in melanin synthesis were up-regulated by 3.5 and 3 fold respectively by ${\alpha}-MSH$, and were normalized to control levels by the addition of GTFE. The results suggest that GTFE inhibits melanin synthesis in ${\alpha}-MSH$ stimulated B16-F10 melanoma cells by normalizing expression of genes that are essential for melanin synthesis. Overall, the results suggest that GTFE could be applied in the development of a whitening agent for the treatment of dermal hyperpigmentation.

  • Thermal conductivity of ground has a great influence on the performance of Ground Heat Exchangers (GHEs). In general, the ground thermal conductivity significantly depends on the density (or porosity) and the moisture content since they are decisive factors that determine the interface area between soil particles which is available for heat transfer. In this study, a large number of thermal conductivity experiments were conducted for soils of varying porosity and moisture content, and a database of thermal properties for the weathered granite soils was set up. Based on the database, a 3D Curved Surface Model and an Artificial Neural Network Model (ANNM) were proposed for estimating the thermal conductivity. The new models were validated by comparing predictions by the models with new thermal conductivity data, which had not been used in developing the models. As for the 3D CSM, the normalized average values of training and test data were 1.079 and 1.061 with variations of 0.158 and 0.148, respectively. The predictions became somewhat unreliable in a low range of thermal conductivity values in considering the distribution pattern. As for the ANNM, the 'Logsig-Tansig' transfer function combination with nine neurons gave the most accurate estimates. The normalized average values of training data and test data were 1.006 and 0.954 with variations of 0.026 and 0.098, respectively. It can be concluded that the ANNM gives much better results than the 3D CSM.
