  • Red sorrel (Rumex acetosella L.), as one of exotic weeds in Korea, was dominated in grassland and reduced the quality of forage. Improving current pasture productivity by precision management requires practical tools to collect site-specific pasture weed data. Recent development in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology has offered cost effective and real time applications for site-specific data collection. To map red sorrel on a hill pasture, we tested the potential use of an UAV system with digital cameras (visible and near-infrared (NIR) camera). Field measurements were conducted on grazing hill pasture at Hanwoo Improvement Office, Seosan City, Chungcheongnam-do Province, Korea on May 17, 2014. Plant samples were obtained at 20 sites. An UAV system was used to obtain aerial photos from a height of approximately 50 m (approximately 30 cm spatial resolution). Normalized digital number values of Red, Green, Blue, and NIR channels were extracted from aerial photos. Multiple linear regression analysis results showed that the correlation coefficient between Rumex content and 4 bands of UAV image was 0.96 with root mean square error of 9.3. Therefore, UAV monitoring system can be a quick and cost effective tool to obtain spatial distribution of red sorrel data for precision management of hilly grazing pasture.

  • This study was intended to set development priorities for five undeveloped neighborhood parks scattered throughout the downtown area of Cheongju City using a PDPI(Park Development Pressure Index). In order to calculate the PDPI, this study employed an additive integration method. The PDPI was graded from 1 to 5, based on the evaluation scores in accordance with nine indicators selected through literature reviews and interviews with public officials. The indicators have been classified into three categories: physical environment, utilization possibility, and facility distribution. The indicators are as follows: 1) 'altitude and inclination' and 'NDVI' as physical environment indicators; 2) 'ratio of residential area', 'forecasted utility population', 'undeveloped period', 'redevelopment near parks', 'ratio of area divided by main streets', reflecting utilization possibility; and 3) 'Distance between Neighborhood Parks' and 'Distribution of alternative facilities' as facility distribution. The following results were found: 1) three neighborhood parks including 'Sagic 2', 'Sachen', and 'Dangsan' were ranked in the first grade of PDPI; and, 2) one neighborhood park 'Samsungdang' was ranked in the fifth grade of PDPI. The above results mean that among undeveloped neighborhood parks, three have been exposed to extremely strong park development pressure, and that while two neighborhood parks have had strong exposure to park development pressure due to potential users according to their close location to Sagic Ro, an east-west main axis of Cheongju City, one neighborhood park has had weak exposure to development pressure because of the close location to 'Chuungbuk National University' and a lack of residential areas, showing a low possibility for development.

  • This study was conducted to characterize the relationship of rainfall intensity and slope stability by using numerical analysis. The maximum precipitation rate for 10 minutes, 1 hour and 1 day was determined as 28 mm, 70 mm and 271 mm, respectively, by investigating 36 years of KMA data. Then slope infiltration analysis was performed to obtain the ground water level in the slope by using computer programming SEEP/W, and slope stability analysis was done for each time step by using program SLOPE/W. The factor of safety was minimized when the slope was saturated under each rainfall intensity; the time required for saturation was 2 hours with 10 minutes rainfall intensity of 28 mm, 7 hours with 1 hour rainfall intensity of 70 mm and 3 days with 1 day rainfall intensity of 271 mm. When accumulated rainfall was 196 mm for the 10minutes rainfall intensity of 28 mm with duration of 2 hours, the factor of safety was decreased to 1.0, while accumulated rainfall of 468 mm and 820 mm for the 1 hour and 1 day rainfall intensity, respectively, was required to reach the factor of safety, 1.0. Since the normalized rainfall intensity was 13 mm and 1.9 mm for 1 hour and 1 day maximum rainfall, respectively, those results showed that the rainfall intensity could have a more effect on the slope stability than the accumulated rainfall.

  • When the water quality modelling is done with a manual calibration, it is possible that the researcher's opinion may affect the objectivity of the research. Hence, the role of the automatic calibration is highly important. This research applies a technique to automatically calibrate the water quality parameters by implementing an optimization method. This involves estimating the optimum water quality parameters targeting influential parameters towards the lake's BOD, DO, Phosphorus, Nitrogen and Phytoplankton. To accurately calculate the water temperature and hydraulic characteristics of a deep, stratifying lake, EFDC, a 3-dimensional hydraulic model which can be linked to the WASP7 was applied. With EFDC, the segment of the lake is formed and utilized as an input data of the WASP7. For the calibration of the water quality parameters of the WASP7, an influence coefficient algorithm and a genetic algorithm was applied. Of the five water quality variables for calibration, the normalized residuals of the observed and calculated values of DO, TN, CBOD were relatively small and the three water quality variables were calibrated properly. Yet the accuracy of the calibration of TP and Chl-a was relatively low.

  • The purpose of this paper is to prepare snowmelt parameters using RS and GIS and to assess the snowmelt impact in SLURP (Semi-distributed Land Use-based Runoff Process) model for Chungju-Dam watershed $(6,661.5km^2)$. Three sets of NOAA AVHRR images (1998-1999, 2000-2001, 2001-2002) were analyzed to prepare snow-related data of the model during winter period. Snow cover areas were extracted using 1, 3 and 4 channels, and the snow depth was spatially interpolated using snowfall data of ground meteorological stations. With the snowmelt parameters, DEM (Digital Elevation Model), land cover, NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) and weather data, the model was calibrated for 3 years (1998, 2000, 2001), and verified for 1 year (1999) using the calibrated parameters. The average Nash-Sutcliffe efficiencies for 4 years (1998-2001) discharge comparison with and without snowmelt parameters were 0.76 and 0.73 for the full period, and 0.57 and 0.19 for the period of January to May. The results showed that the spatially prepared snow-related data reduced the calibration effort and enhanced the model results.

  • Since the 1990's, a number of ULF geomagnetic disturbance associated with earthquake occurrences have actively been reported, and polarization analysis of geomagnetic fields becomes one of potential candidates to be capable of predicting short-term earthquake. This study develops the modified polarization analysis method based on the previous studies, and analyzes three-component geomagnetic fields obtained at Cheongyang geomagnetic observatory using the developed method. A daily polarization value (the ratio of spectral power of horizontal and vertical geomagnetic field) is calculated with a focus on the 0.01 Hz band, which is known to be the most sensitive to seismogenic ULF radiation. We analyze a total of 10 months of geomagnetic data obtained at Cheongyang observatory, and compare the polarization values with the Kp index and the earthquake occurred in the analysis period. The results show that there is little correlation between the temporal variations of polarization values and Kp index, but remarkable increases in polarization values are identified which are associated with two earthquakes. Comparison the polarization values obtained at Cheongyang and Kanoya observatory indicates that the increases of polarization values at Cheongyang might be due to not global geomagnetic induction but the locally occurred earthquakes. Furthermore, these features are clearly shown in normalized polarization values, which take account in the statistical characteristics of each geomagnetic field. On the basis of these results, polarization analysis can be used as promising tool for monitoring the earthquake-precursory phenomenon.

  • Analytical geopotential field in balance with the sectoral mode (the first symmetric mode with respect to the equator) of the Rossby-Haurwitz wave on the inclined rotation axis was derived in presence of superrotation background flow. The balanced field was obtained by inverting the divergence equation with the time derivative being zero. The inversion consists of two steps, i.e., the evaluation of nonlinear forcing terms and the finding of analytical solutions based on the Poisson's equation. In the second step, the forcing terms in the from of Legendre function were readily inverted due to the fact that Legendre function is the eigenfunction of the spherical Laplacian operator, while other terms were solved either by introducing a trial function or by integrating the Legendre equation. The balanced field was found to be expressed with six zonal wavenumber components, and shown to be of asymmetric structure about the equator. In association with asymmetricity, the advantageous point of the balanced field as a validation method for the numerical model was addressed. In special cases where the strength of the background flow is a half of or exactly the same as the rotation rate of the Earth it was revealed that one of the zonal wavenumber components vanishes. The analytical balanced field was compared with the geopotential field which was obtained using a spherical harmonics spectral model. It was found that the normalized difference lied in the order of machine rounding, indicating the reliability of the analytical results. The stability of the sectoral mode of Rossby-Haurwitz wave and the associated balanced field was discussed, comparing with the flrst antisymmetric mode.

  • Plans to mitigate overheating in urban areas requires the identification of the characteristics of the thermal environment of the city. The key information is the distribution of higher and lower temperatures (referred to as "hotspot" or "coldspot", respectively) in the city. This study aims to identify the areas within Jeonju City that are suffering from increasing land surface temperatures (LST) and the factors linked to such this phenomenon. To identify the hot and cold spots, Local Moran's I and Getis-Ord Gi* were calculated for the LST based on 2017 images taken using the thermal band of the Landsat 8 satellite. Hotspot analysis revealed that hotspot regions, (the areas with a high concentration of Land Surface Temperature) are located in the old town area and in industrial districts. To figure out the factors linked to the hotspots, a correlation analysis, and a regression analysis taking into account environmental covariates including Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and land cover. The values of NDVI showed that it had the strongest effect on the lowering LSTs. The results of this study are expected to provide directions for urban thermal environment designing and policy development to mitigate the urban heat island effect in the future.

  • The effects of soil-chemical contact time (aging) on sorption and desorption of atrazine were studied in soil slurries because aging is an important determinant affecting on the sorption and desorption characteristics of organic contaminants in the environment. Sorption isotherm and desorption kinetic experiments were performed, and soilwater distribution coefficients and desorption rate parameters were evaluated using linear and non-linear sorption equations and a three-site desorption model, respectively. Aging time for sorption of atrazine in sterilized soil slurries ranged from 2 days to 8 months. Atrazine sorption isotherms were nearly linear $(r^2\;>\;0.97)$ and sorption coefficients were strongly correlated to soil organic carbon content. Sorption distribution coefficients $(K_d)$ increased with increasing aging in all soils studied. Sorption non-linearity did not increase with increased aging except for the Houghton muck soil. Desorption profiles were well described by the three-site desorption model. The equilibrium site fraction $(f_{eq})$ decreased and the non-desorbable site fraction $(f_{nd})$ increased as a function of aging time in all soils. In all soils studied, it was found that when normalized to soil organic matter content the concentration of atrazine in desorbable sites was comparatively constant, whereas that in non-desorbable site increased as aging increased.

  • Stents are widely used as the most common method of treating coronary artery disease with implants in the form of a metal mesh. The blood flow is normalized by inserting a stent into the narrowed or clogged areas of the human body. In this study, the mechanical characteristics of a stent are investigated according to the variations of its design parameters by the Taguchi method and finite element analysis. A stent model of the Palmaz-Schatz type was used for the analysis. In the analysis, an elasto-plastic material model was adopted for the stent and a hyper-elastic model was used for the balloon. The main interest of this study is to investigate the effects of the design parameters which reduce the possibility of restenosis by adjusting the recoil amount. A Taguchi orthogonal array was constructed on the model of the stent. The thickness and length and angle of the slot were selected as the design parameters. The amounts of radial recoil and longitudinal recoil were calculated by finite element analysis. The statistical analysis using the Taguchi method showed that optimizing the shape of the stent could reduce the possibility of restenosis. The optimized shape showed improvements of recoil in the radial and longitudinal directions of ~1% and ~0.1%, respectively, compared to the default model.
