MPC or model predictive control is representative of control methods which are able to handle physical constraints. Closed-loop stability can therefore be ensured only locally in the presence of constraints of this type. However, if the system is neutrally stable, and if the constraints are imposed only on the input, global aymptotic stability can be obtained; until recently, use of infinite horizons was thought to be inevitable in this case. A globally stabilizing finite-horizon MPC has lately been suggested for neutrally stable continuous-time systems using a non-quadratic terminal cost which consists of cubic as well as quadratic functions of the state. The idea originates from the so-called small gain control, where the global stability is proven using a non-quadratic Lyapunov function. The newly developed finite-horizon MPC employs the same form of Lyapunov function as the terminal cost, thereby leading to global asymptotic stability. A discrete-time version of this finite-horizon MPC is presented here. The proposed MPC algorithm is also coded using an SQP (Sequential Quadratic Programming) algorithm, and simulation results are given to show the effectiveness of the method.
In this paper, we propose a non-fragile guaranteed cost controller design method for uncertain linear systems with constant delyas in state. The norm bounded and time-varying uncertainties are subjected to system and controller design matrices. A quadratic cost function is considered as the performance measure for the system. Based on the Lyapunov method, an LMI(Linear Matrix Inequality) optimization problem is established to design the controller which uses information of delayed state and minimizes the upper bound of the quadratic cost function for all admissible system uncertainties and controller gain variations. Numerical examples show the effectiveness of the proposed method.
This paper suggests a new methodology of evolutionary computations - an Adaptive Evolutionary Algorithm (AEA) for solving the Economic Load Dispatch (ELD) problem which has piecewise quadratic cost functions and prohibited operating zones with many local minima. AEA uses a genetic algorithm (GA) and an evolution strategy (ES) in an adaptive manner in order to take merits of two different evolutionary computations: global search capability of GA and local search capability of ES. In the reproduction procedure, proportions of the population by GA and the population by ES are adaptively modulated according to the fitness. Case studies illustrate the superiority of the proposed methods to existing conventional methods in power generation cost and computation time. The results demonstrate that the AEA can be applied successfully in the solution of ELD with piecewise quadratic cost functions and prohibited operating zones
We consider a proportionate flow shop problem with controllable processing times. The objective is to minimize the sum of total completion time and total compression cost, in which the cost function of compressing the processing times is non-decreasing concave. We show that the problem can be solved in polynomial time by reducing it to a polynomially solvable 0-1 unconstrained quadratic program.
The robust non-fragile guaranteed cost control problem is studied in this paper for class of uncertain linear large-scale systems with time-varying delays in subsystem interconnections and given quadratic cost functions. The uncertainty in the system is assumed to be norm-hounded arid time-varying. Also, the state-feedback gains for subsystems of the large-scale system are assumed to have norm-bounded controller gain variations. The problem is to design state feedback control laws such that the closed-loop system is asymptotically stable and the closed-loop cost function value is not more than a specified upper bound far all admissible uncertainties. Sufficient conditions for the existence of such controllers are derived based on the linear matrix inequality (LMI) approach combined with the Lyapunov method. A parameterized characterization of the robust non-fragile guaranteed cost contrellers is 7iven in terms of the feasible solution to a certain LMI. Finally, in order to show the application of the proposed method, a numerical example is included.

In order to achieve reliable but cost-effective crash simulations of stamped parts, sheet forming process effects were incorporated in simulations using the ideal forming theory mixed with the 3D hybrid membrane/shell method, while the subsequent crash simulations were carried out using a dynamic explicit finite element code. Example solutions performed for forming and crash simulations of I- and S-shaped rails verified that the proposed approach is cost-effective without sacrificing accuracy. The method required a significantly small amount of additional computation time, less than 3% for the specific examples, to incorporate sheet forming effects to crash simulations. As for the constitutive equation, the combined isotropic-kinematic hardening law and the non-quadratic anisotropic yield stress potential as well as its conjugate strain-rate potential were used to describe the anisotropy of AA6114-T4 aluminum alloy sheets.
A receding horizon $H_{\infty}$ predictive control method is derived by solving a min-max problem in non-recursive forms. The min-max cost index is converted to a quadratic form which for systems with input saturation can be minimized using QP. Through the use of closed-loop prediction the prediction of states the use of closed-loop prediction the prediction of states in the presence of disturbances are made non-conservative and it become possible to get a tighter $H_{\infty}$ norm bound. Stability conditions and $H_{\infty}$ norm bounds on disturbance rejection are obtained in infinite horizon sence. Polyhedral types of feasible sets for sets and disturbances are adopted to deal with the input constraints. The weight selection procedures are given in terms of LMIs and the algorithm is formulated so that it can be solved via QP. This work is a modified version of an earlier work which was based on ellipsoidal type feasible sets[15].
Response spectrum method is still an effective approach for the design of buildings with supplemental dampers. In practice, complex complete quadratic combination (CCQC) rule is always used in the response spectrum method to consider the effect of non-classical damping. The conventional CCQC rule is based on exact complex mode vectors. Sometimes the calculated complex mode vectors may be not excited by the external loading and errors in the structural responses always arise due to the mode truncation. Load-dependent Ritz (LDR) vectors are associated with the external loading and LDR vectors not excited can be automatically excluded. Also, contributions of higher modes are implicitly contained in the LDR vectors in terms of static responses. To improve the calculation efficiency and accuracy, LDR vectors are introduced in the CCQC rule in the present study. Firstly, the generation procedure of LDR vectors suitable for non-classical damping system is presented. Compared to the conventional LDR vectors, the LDR vectors herein are complex-valued and named as complex LDR (CLDR) vectors. Based on the CLDR vectors, the CCQC rule is then rederived and an improved response spectrum method is developed. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method in this paper is verified through three typical non-classical damping buildings. Numerical results show that the CLDR vector is superior to the complex mode with the same number in the calculation. Since the generation of CLDR vectors requires less computational cost and storage space, the method proposed in this paper offers an attractive alternative, especially for structures with a large number of degrees of freedom.
